The last thing Jeremy had expected was that he’d someday end up back in the house he’d grown up in. He hadn’t been back there for more than a night or two in a few years and now here he was, back in his old bedroom with Elena next door, their rooms connected by a bathroom and Katherine across the hall. It was almost like the old days, except so much had happened to them all over the last couple of years that it was nothing like the old days.
Since moving back in, after his breakup with Myrcella, Jeremy had found himself awake in the middle of the night a few times, recalling the night their parents had died. How he’d been the one to come home and find their bodies by the stairs and how he almost hadn’t believed his eyes at first considering how high he’d been at the time.
He knew it was going to take some time to get used to being back and being single after so many years, but he was glad that he had both Elena and Katherine around to help him.
Katherine was home, it had been years since she was even in the country, but here was and she was back with her family. It felt different, knowing her mom and dad would not be around to yell at her for whatever she did, which was a lot, as Elena said, Katherine was fearless and did what she wanted.
Which is why she was in the kitchen, wine bottle in hand as she looked for the corkscrew to open the damn bottle. She didn’t know what time it was, she just wanted some wine so she kept making a slamming noise by closing and opening drawers and cabinets as she searched for it.
The slamming had woken Elena out of a deep slumber. With everything that medical school and becoming a doctor entailed, her sleep schedule was chaotic to say the least. And, standing in the doorway of the kitchen, arms crossed as she offered a less-than-thrilled look to her sister.
“Looking for something?”
Jeremy had also been up in his room, but he hadn’t been sleeping. Just like any other time, he had been in the middle of a video game when he heard the slamming in the kitchen. It wasn’t until he heard Elena walking downstairs. Pausing his game, he got to his feet and headed down after her to see just what was going on downstairs.
Reaching the kitchen, he glanced from Katherine to Elena then back, “If you’re looking for a corkscrew, I last saw one in the drawer near the fridge.”
She turned to see her twin and smile, wiggling the bottle, than Jeremy mentioned where it was, “thank you,” she spun around to go to the drawer to get it. “Would any of you like a glass?” she offered than made a “ah-ha,” noise as she pulled it out.
“I’m more than willing to share,” she offered as she moved to place the bottle down and started to use the corkscrew to open the bottle.
“I was trying to sleep,” Elena advised grumpily. “Maybe next time keep it down a little?” But she did step forward, stifling a yawn as she moved to lean against the counter.
Jeremy drank beer more than anything, but he couldn’t sleep and he didn’t have to work the next day or have classes, so he figured there was no harm in having some wine, “Sure, I’ll have a glass.” He glanced at Elena, “We’ll be quiet if you want to go back to bed.” He smirked at his sister.
Katherine let out a snarky laugh, she loved it when Jeremy was on her side, “Yeah,” she tossed in as she pop the cork out of the bottle, “plus the wine will help you sleep,” she didn’t know if that was true, just running her mouth.
Grabbing them all wine glasses, she poured them all a glass, “you can go back to bed after one glass, E.”
“It doesn’t,” Elena shook her head. But there was little point in her fighting it. If Katherine and Jeremy both wanted to party she supposed a glass of wine wouldn’t hurt anything.
“One glass,” she advised. “And you can tell me I’m being silly worrying about both of you.”
Jeremy took one of the glasses and moved to the kitchen table, trusting that his sisters would follow him, “Why are you worried about us?” Sure, it was reasonable that after his break up with his fiancee, there might be reason to be worried about Jeremy, but honestly he didn’t think either of them really needed to be worried.
Of course Jeremy was sad. After all, he’d thought he was going to be getting married in a few months, but things didn’t always work out the way you expected.
“Yeah,” Katherine jumped in, “we always get right back up again if knocked down by anything in life,” she grab the bottle and the glass, “We are fine Elena, so why worry,” she pointed the bottle at her before sitting it down, “you have enough on your plate to add us to it.”
Giving Jeremy a playful wink, she sat down at the table, “Just a bump in the road is all, right, Jer?”
“Because it’s what I do,” Elena answered. “I’m going to be a doctor, I like to fix things. And when I can’t, I worry. Of course you’re both okay. It doesn’t mean that I can stop myself.”
She took a long sip, shrugging. “I just want you both to be happy.”
Jeremy nodded at Katherine then turned to smile at Elena, “Of course we’ll be happy. For me, it’ll just take a little time.” He took a sip from his glass as he watched his sisters. “Enough about us though, how’s the medical school stuff going?” Jeremy knew that Elena had been working hard in school, but when it came to medical school, he tended to get lost on just how long she had to go to school for. It seemed like it took a ridiculous amount of time to become a doctor.
Katherine just sat there drinking her wine, has she been happy in her travels, not really...it was more of escape than anything. But she nodded her head with Jeremy words and than arched a brow as she waited for her twin to answer Jeremy question about school.
“It’s going.” That was about all she could say. “I’ll need to start looking at residencies soon enough. By the end of this year, I’ll be working with actual people.” A teasing smile. “It seems like it takes forever, I know.” Even to her. “And then after that, and after graduation, and once I’ve paid back all my student loans...maybe eventually I can open my own practice.”
“Are you nervous about actually working on people?” Jeremy had watched plenty of doctor shows, both real and fictional and there was just so much that one had to learn; he didn’t think he’d ever be able to do something like that, “I’d be worried that I’d screw up somewhere.” While being a doctor wasn’t something Jeremy thought he could ever do, he was impressed that Elena had chosen that career path.
“You should know better than to ask that,” Katherine said with a snort, “Perfect Elena has been studying hard for she won’t fuck things up, haven’t you, sis?” she asked as she down the rest of the liquid in her glass, “if anyone messes up, it won’t be her,” she remarked as she reached for the bottle to pour her another glass.
“It will,” Elena sighed softly. “Every doctor makes mistakes. It’s one of the first things we learned. Not that I didn’t already know I wasn’t infallible but…”. A shrug as she looked to Jeremy. “Yeah, I am nervous. I just have to try and do my best.”
Jeremy smirked as he listened to his sisters. He’d missed having them both around, even if Katherine was pulling out the ‘Perfect Elena Card’. “I’m sure you’ll be fine though. Things happen, but you’ve got this.” He took another sip of his own wine.
“Ditto,” she chimed agreeing with her brother, she smiled as she moved the bottle to Elena glass, just pouring a little more. “You need to lighten up some,” she put the bottle down, grab her drink, “we got chips?” she asked as she moved to find something to snack on.
Elena grinned, downing her wine. “Cupboard by the fridge,” she directed. “And thanks for the vote of confidence”. She’d do her best to make them proud. “Now...I’m going to go get some sleep….keep it down to a dull roar?”
