Who: Tyler and Klaus
What: Klaus wants to hang out with his old slave friend, Tyler
Where: A bar
When: Recently
Warnings/Ratings: Low/none
Status: Complete
It was a usual night out for Klaus, filled with drinking both the alcoholic and human kind. Best way to end the day if you asked him. Klaus would never admit it, but it got a bit lonely at times. Especially now that he couldn’t simply call on Tyler to come join him,
Klaus had just ordered himself a glass of scotch when he spotted none other than the man he was just thinking of. What a coincidence. With that devilish grin on his face, Klaus approached his former slave. “Long time.”
Going to the bar and drinking by himself seemed to be Tyler’s new normal. Jeremy had understood everything that Tyler had done - of course he had - but most of Tyler’s other friends, well… they wanted nothing to do with him. And he couldn’t exactly blame them for that. This wasn’t the dreams where everyone would just instantly forgive anything that happened. Then again, even in the dreams, it had been harder for Tyler to win back people’s forgiveness than say, Damon, would could do no wrong.
It wasn’t that Tyler was just drowning his sorrows though. The alcohol had the dual purpose of that, and of helping quell some of his other cravings, which were stronger after he’d gone weeks of eating whatever, and whoever, he wanted. He was off blood for the vein, for the time being at least, and had been trying to keep his blood bag consumption on the low side ever since. At least until he stopped looking at the supple curve of some good-looking girls neck and immediately imagining sinking his fangs into it.
He was lost in his own thoughts, so he didn’t notice Klaus approaching him until Klaus was already there. He shot up from his seat, his shoulders curved, hands in fists, ready to defend himself if Klaus decided to attack.
“Not long enough,” he said.
“Don’t be such a downer,” Klaus replied with another sip of his drink. “We both know how dull your life has been without me.” Of course part of Klaus was really talking about himself. It wasn’t half as fun going on the hunt alone. Nor was having to handle all the mundane tasks at his gallery. He missed having someone at his beck and call. Sure he could always compel himself a new slave. But it wasn’t the time. As defiant as Tyler was, the other hybrid had grown on Niklaus.
“It really hasn’t, Klaus,” Tyler said. “If anything, it’s better.” Which wasn’t necessarily true. At least when he’d been sired to Klaus, he’d had Caroline at his side. He almost would have accepted it again if it meant that Caroline would come back to him.
Almost.
“How’s needing to do your own dirty work going for you?” he asked, taking a sip of his beer.
Klaus scoffed. He highly doubted that Tyler’s life was better. Yeah he may have preferred no longer being sired to Klaus, but the hybrid had a feeling the rest of Tyler’s life was a mess. One didn’t just turn off their humanity and have everything go back to normal after.
“Please,” Klaus replied with another sip of his drink. “I don’t do dirty work.” He still had his compulsion after all. But it just wasn’t the same.
“No, of course not,” Tyler said. “How could I have thought otherwise.” Not that he really expected Klaus to be mopping his own floor, but it had been an amusing mental image at least. “So, are you going to be here for long?”
“As in this bar?” Klaus replied with a raised brow. It was a strange question for Tyler to ask. Why did it matter how long Klaus was going to be there for. “Depends on my mood,” he replied honestly. “Why? Did you want to go hunting?” he couldn’t help but grin at the thought of it. It had been awhile since he and Tyler had found some gorgeous woman to feed on together.
“No,” Tyler said. He finished off the rest of his drink, and put the glass back down on the table. “I was just trying to figure out if I should find somewhere else to drink or not. But I’ll just take that as a ‘yes I should.’” He got up, ready to head to the door.
Klaus used his speed to block Tyler from exiting. “Not so fast,” he told the young hybrid. “You just got here,” Klaus added that devilish grin back on his face. “Sit down, have another drink.” He knew that the sire bond was no longer there. If Tyler wanted to leave he could. However Tyler also knew that when it came to Klaus, actions had consequences. And he knew all Tyler’s soft spots.
Tyler clenched his jaw. For a second, he was torn. He wasn’t sired to Klaus anymore, and the temptation to leave was strong. On the other hand, he knew exactly what Klaus was capable of. Which almost won him over, until he remembered that he had nothing left to lose anyway. There wasn’t anything Klaus could take away from Tyler that hadn’t already walked out of Tyler’s life.
“I’ve got better things to do than waste my time with you,” Tyler muttered, pushing past Klaus again.
If Klaus wasn’t so used to insults that might have hurt him. However he was unphased. Instead he just blocked Tyler from leaving for a second time. “Well then,” he said with a smirk. “I guess I will just have to find someone else to occupy my time with. Perhaps that pretty little girlfriend of
yours is free.”
“Thanks to you, I don’t have a girlfriend,” Tyler snapped. Maybe that wasn’t necessarily true; Klaus hadn’t forced Tyler to turn off his humanity and kill people. He hadn’t forced Tyler to attack Caroline’s friend. No, all he’d done was make Tyler break up with Caroline in the first place.
Still, the implicit threat in the statement was obvious enough. Tyler had put Caroline through enough by now; he couldn’t make her deal with Klaus too. So, he followed Klaus back to the table, his jaw set.
Well at least something stuck. With the way Caroline had acted when Tyler’s humanity was off, refusing to leave his house until Tyler turned it back on. Klaus was sure she had taken him back. Perhaps she truly was as strong here as she was in the dreams.
“What a shame,” Klaus said though he clearly didn’t mean it. “I suppose you’ll just have to drink your pain away.” With him.
“Yeah, obviously,” Tyler said. He was going to have to drink a lot if he was planning on getting through whatever this Klaus hangout was. He waited until the server came, and looked her in the eye. “Just bring be a bottle of Jack. A full, unopened bottle of Jack,” he said.
“You got it,” said the server, writing it down on her pad as if that was a completely normal order. “And for yourself?” she asked, turning to Klaus.
Klaus raised a brow. Impressed by Tyler’s order. He knew Tyler could be fun when he was sired to Klaus. But he was doing shit Klaus would probably have him do even without the sire bond. It brought a grin to the hybrid’s face.
“I’ll have a bottle of your best scotch,” Klaus replied using his own compulsion on the server. “On the house.”
Tyler sighed. He hadn’t been looking to impress Klaus, and he definitely hadn’t been looking for a free bottle. “So, what exactly do you want, Klaus?” he asked. “Are you going to try to talk me into another murder spree? Maybe rip the hearts out of some second graders? Because my answer is definitely going to be no.”
“Don’t be so dramatic, Tyler,” Klaus replied coolly. “What happened to just talking? It’s been awhile since we’ve caught up.”
Tyler raised his eyebrows, looking at Klaus from under them skeptically. “Have we ever caught up?” he asked. He was pretty sure their entire relationship up until this point had been Klaus telling Tyler what to do and Tyler having no choice but the mindlessly obey.
“Perhaps it’s time we start,” Klaus replied as the server brought over the two bottles of alcohol. Klaus looked over at her. “We are going to need some glasses,” Klaus replied. He assumed that had been obvious but apparently not.
“Right,” the woman replied. “Sorry I’ll be right back with those.”
As she hurried off Klaus turned his attention back to Tyler. “Clearly Caroline hasn’t forgiven you yet.” Klaus picked up on that with the ex girlfriend comment earlier. “How are things with your mom?” he asked feigning interest in Tyler’s life.
Start catching up? Tyler rose both his eyebrows, looking at Klaus skeptically. This was definitely a first, and he had to wonder what Klaus’ ulterior motive was in all of this. He had to have one; Klaus Mikaelson wasn’t the kind of person who gave a damn about anyone who wasn’t one of his siblings.
There was something about Klaus casually bringing up Tyler’s mom that rankled him, and the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. His eyes flashed yellow for just a moment, unconsciously. But this Klaus hadn’t killed his mother. He had to remember that. It was hard not to hold people accountable for what they did in the dreams, but Tyler was getting better at it. Besides, Klaus had done enough here for Tyler to be mad about.
“Things are fine,” he said shortly, and then, because he didn’t want Klaus to keep talking about the people in his life, Tyler asked “and how’ve you been?”
Klaus noticed that change in Tyler’s eyes. Clearly he had hit a nerve. It didn’t seem to be the Caroline thing either. It was when Klaus mentioned Tyler’s mom. Strange. He didn’t think that would push any buttons.
Oh. Right. He had killed her in the dreams. It took him a minute to remember that. “I’ve been better than ever,” Klaus replied with his usual grin. “Now that Freya and I have our house back,” he added pointedly.
“I’m so happy for you,” Tyler said flatly. As far as Tyler was concerned, the one thing he didn’t regret while having his humanity off was singing loudly and off-key in the middle of the night when he was sure that Klaus would hear him. “You’d think after finally getting rid of an unwanted house guest you wouldn’t want to keep talking to them.”
“There’s a difference,” Klaus replied as the glasses were finally brought to the table. He didn’t even acknowledge the server. Instead he just poured his drink. “Between having a drink with someone and having them live in your spare room.”
Tyler didn’t bother with the glass. He put the bottle to his lips and drank directly from it. Who had time for pouring alcohol in a glass when he was being forced to spend time with Klaus of all people? “I wouldn’t call that living,” Tyler said. “But I guess chaining someone up in a guest room is just about the only way you could have someone who wasn’t family spend the night.”
Tyler was trying to insult him. But all it did was make Klaus laugh. A low chuckle. “Oh, you have no idea what I do with chains at my house.” He smirked before taking another sip from his glass. He did have enough class not to drink out of a bottle like some people.
Tyler made a face. The last thing he needed to picture was what Klaus did with the chains in his house when they weren’t being used to lock up a humanity-less hybrid. “Not something I needed to hear, Klaus,” he said.
“You’re the one that brought it up,” Klaus countered pouring himself another drink and downing it. He wasn’t enjoying this chat as much as he thought he would. He had to admit he missed when Tyler would go out hunting with him. “Well as fun as this has been,” Klaus replied standing up. “I have other places to be.”
“Thank god,” Tyler breathed. He wasn’t going to protest Klaus leaving. It just meant that Tyler could enjoy the rest of his whiskey in peace.
