Sometimes, Jim had a bit of a 6th sense when it came to his friends, and he thought Cisco was in need of a little distraction from whatever might have been bothering him. So after subtly making sure Cisco was alone and not involved in anything embarrassing, he beamed him directly to the Observation Deck without much of a warning.
Jim had set up the deck into what basically amounted to a futuristic arcade. There was holographic laser tag, space bowling, a variety of arcade machines he’d spent the past two months locating and refurbishing in his spare time. Normally they’d be in the rec room but he liked the idea of pinball wizard with a view of the Earth outside the huge windows.
“Morning!”
***
No, nothing too embarrassing except for the toothbrush in his hand that he had been about to put into the jar where he stashed the rest of them when suddenly he was definitely not standing in his bathroom anymore, but stumbiling slightly on unfamiliar ground. “Um..what the hell? Am I being kidnapped right now?” He was holding onto a toothbrush now on the Observation Deck of the Starship Enterprise and very confused.
And then a familiar voice caught his attention. He was briefly disoriented and shot a confused look over at his friend. At least he was dressed. He wasn’t typically much of a morning person, Barry could attest to that.
--
“There’s coffee over by the pinball machines,” Jim said, far too cheerful for it being this early in the morning. He wasn’t as bad as some morning people were, but it could be a little obnoxious.
“I figured you needed a day away from everything, and I can’t think of anything better than spending a day with a friend.”
--
Cisco gave him a sidelong glance and pointed that toothbrush threateningly at him. “There had better be.” Or what, he’d brush him to death? Poke him with a plastic object? Cisco was not exactly the epitome of intimidation. It probably came across as more comical than anything as he crossed the distance over toward said coffee.
“Days don’t start until after ten A.M.” The engineer informed him, giving him a sulky look as he poured that coffee into a nearby mug. Cisco was only half way dressed. Shirt and hoodie, sweats were still on. “Did you eat sugar for breakfast or something?”
--
Jim grinned back at him, nonplussed about being threatened by a toothbrush. It was almost like he was experienced with such things as being threatened by hygienic items. Maybe not on a frequent basis, but often enough to make an impression on him.
“If you ever want to join Starfleet you’ll need to get up at some ungodly hours until you earn a later shift.” It wasn’t really relevant now but he was in the mood to tease Cisco. “I exercise first thing.”
--
“I glare at the sun first thing..” Very different routines they had. “Then I deeply consider going back to bed.” Some days he did go back to bed. Some days weren’t worth getting up. Cisco was considering today to be one of those. He’d been suffering nightmares pretty regularly lately, and his tiredness was showing. Coffee, much needed coffee. He wasn’t getting more than a few hours a night these days if that. Last night had been less. His powers went off at random thanks to one of said nightmares and he ended up in a bit of pain again.
Sipping at some of the coffee in his hands, he gave Jim an exasperated look. “The only exercise I’m doing is figuring out where my blankets ended up the night before.” The coffee wasn’t bad. “If ever you wanted to show me the sleeping quarters, now is your time.” A half tease. He wasn’t even thinking sexy thoughts, he was thinking warm bed thoughts.
--
“That used to be me,” Kirk admitted. “Until the dreams. You could say they brought out a part of me that had remained hidden. And I don’t just mean sleep patterns.”
Captain Kirk was a man to aspire to be, and while Jim might feel he sometimes failed to measure up, he’d never stop trying. And the Captain could tell Cisco was having troubles. “Trouble sleeping?
--
He gave Kirk a look of confusion at that comment. Cisco was a bit naive when it came to some subjects. But then the little gears in his tired brain seemed to respond and click into place. Then confusion again. He was tired, things weren’t making sense as they usually did. “It’s always been me.” Sleeping until well past sunrise. Until a sane hour of the day.
“You could say that.” He rubbed the back of his head tiredly and nursed that coffee. “Nightmares...both realistic and ridiculous.” Pretty much nightly nightmares. “..And powers. I have those now.” He tried to be amusing, but he wasn’t really in an entertaining mood. “Surprise?”
---
“Then you’re more like who you dream you are. Like how who I was awake was more like how my alternate universe dreams went.” Jim didn’t know if Cisco knew that some dreamers dreamed of realities mirrored in media, so he kept that part to himself for now.
“Do you want to talk about it? I’m a good listener.” Jim gestured towards one of the couches near the windows.
---
That ship had everything. Cisco shouldn’t be surprised, but he was. Maybe Jim had a point, if he stopped it might lose it’s magic. He didn’t want that to happen. Sliding toward the couch with coffee in hand, he sank down on it Besides talking, maybe waking up properly would be a good thing. His usual morning routine including waking up and youtube for a couple hours before he was ready to face the world.
“I should be better at compartmentalizing.” He gave a strained smile. Jemma was a god at it. Cisco struggled with the dreams vs reality at times. The lines were blurry to him, but it likely had a lot to do with gaining said powers since they were cognitive. “These powers are kind of a lot.” A lot to deal with, and a lot to comprehend for most people. “They’re tied to the vibration of the Earth itself.”
---
“Not everyone has need to compartmentalize. Give it time, it’s a skill that develops with practice.” Jim sounded apologetic, like he knew it was a skill that shouldn’t be needed. But it was. Not for the first time he wished Bones or Chapel were around. Bones would have some advice. It would be blunt, but it would be useful.
Jim nodded. “You know, that might explain why you’re having a hard time right now. That planet.” And he pointed towards Earth, “Isn’t the same you one dream of. There could be very tiny shifts in the frequency of the vibrations compared to what you’re used to. I know there are times I can’t sleep without feeling the hum of the Enterprise. I can imagine what that might feel like upscaled.”
---
“Even harder when my head is physically threatening to split apart I suppose.” He knew the way Jemma lived wasn’t easy either, the way she compartmentalized everything would be hard on her in the long run but he envied it. Feeling everything on a vibrational level was difficult. He was tired, even while he sipped at his coffee. At the very least he wasn’t getting anymore seizure symptoms lately, so that was something-but beyond that it was draining, trying to figure out what was going on while experiencing it. “There are days when it’s hard to remember my own name.” He’d always imagined getting powers would be awesome, but so far it was scary and worrisome for his well being. “It’s like a thousand needles on a chalkboard and the inside of your skin is the chalkboard whenever I get a vision.” That was the best explanation he could come up with.
That-however was an angle he hadn’t considered, and he looked up at Jim with a bit of surprise. For a minute he was wordless, but the gears in his head were clicking away. “That might actually be accurate, the equations I’ve been coming up with are only the ones in my head tied to those Dreams to regulate frequency. But maybe I need to turn that focus to this Earth instead.” He was rambling again in science. “How did I miss that? I’m an idiot.” An exhausted, physically tapped out idiot.
---
There were a few experiences that Jim had been through that felt as painful as Cisco’s explanation sounded, but none of them would offer up any solutions, not without better brains than his around to look for the patterns. He was a scientist who could run a starship by himself if he had to, but that was a far cry from someone dedicated to medical or science full time.
“You’re exhausted and in pain, it’s easy enough to miss that.” Jim rubbed at his jaw, staring out at Earth. “If you have the frequency of your Earth, maybe the Enterprise can pick up the frequency of this Earth so you can make the needed adjustments.”
---
“I need to get something from Earth, can you send me back to my place?” If they were going to try this Cisco would need the glasses. “Jemma mentioned frequencies too, but we haven’t been able to find the right one. Not from Earth anyway. Maybe being above it will help.” He wanted to sit around and relax, but he couldn’t get his mind to stop turning on the subject. “Or can you beam an object up? I know you did with the karaoke machine that time but what about something smaller?” If it was smaller would that make it more difficult?
“Hard to sleep with a thousand needles poking at you.” He gave a lopsided grin. Cisco was never one to stay down for long, especially now that he had reason to pick himself back up. Maybe even a solution to all the pain he’d been in! It was an exciting idea. It would probably help with his sleeping as well. Bad enough Zoom invaded his dreams but when he felt him in real time it was worse.
---
Jim rubbed his chin. “Without something to narrow the lock, I won’t be able to beam up a smaller object. I’ll send you down, you just let me know when you’re ready to beam up.”
Excited, he jerked his thumb in the general direction of the sciences labs, “I can get the sensors calibrated for you in the meantime.”
---
“It doesn’t have any known specs to narrow onto yet. Perfect. I literally just need to go grab them, it’s a pair of sunglasses as ridiculous as it sounds. “ He actually laughed a little at the idea. Of all the cool gadgets he could have gotten he got stuck with some shades. Well, it could be worse. He could have gotten a pen or something similar to that. Or a pocket protector or something.
Getting up off that couch he nodded. “I might need to be here when you do that too, this power is connected to my nervous system. But if we can synch me and them up it in theory shouldn’t be hard to do.” That spark that had been previously lost to exhaustion and pain was rejuvenated apparently There was hope to stop the pain faster, in Cisco’s book that could only be good.
---
“So we’re starting from scratch it sounds like.” Jim nodded, heading for the exit so he could beam Cisco down. There was a spring in his step; this was the kind of thing he lived for in his dream. It might not be an exotic nebula or exploding star, but it was still Discovery, and it was helping someone. After all, three of the greatest words in the English language were let me help. Recommended, even, over ‘I love you.’
“I’ll beam you down and then back up, and we’ll get to work.”
---
“Just about. We got some frequencies, but they aren’t accurate. They still hurt.” If he could minimize that pain he’d be in heaven. He was so tired of migraines and seizures he was willing to try just about everything. Sure it wasn’t exactly Jemma approved methods, but if it helped then he was all for it. He figured she would be too. He loved her for what she had been able to help him with so far, but he didn’t want to stop there. If he could have the visions without the pain, it was all the better.
Scampering over to where he needed to be he give him a two finger salute and grinned. “Ready when you are.”
--
Jim wasn’t a doctor, but he hated seeing people in pain. Maybe that was one of the reasons he and Bones had gotten along so well together; their compassion. He’d help Cisco even if he was just a handsome stranger, and not a friend.
Nodding once, Jim energized, and then leaned on the console to wait for Cisco’s signal. Whether this would work or not was still up in the air, but with their brains and the Enterprise’s resources, they might just figure something out.
--
It didn’t take Cisco too long before Kirk got a text from him telling him he was ready to come back up. To Beam him up. All he needed were his own tablet and the pair of darkly colored sunglasses the dreams had given him.
He also brought a certain leather jacket, just for fun. If they got it working Kirk would see what it was good for. Of course it came with leather pant, but Cisco had never tried those on. He wasn’t quite that confident to think he could pull off leather pants too.
--
“Welcome back,” Jim said, once Cisco was back on board. He waited for his friend to step off the transporter pad before starting for the door. “Like the jacket. It’s very you. Now lets get to the lab and do some science.
