There weren’t a lot of jobs that Jessica had a problem with. As far as she was concerned, money was money, and people were generally terrible anyway and deserved what they got. But there were exceptions. Jessica wouldn’t take jobs that involved hurting someone, and when Admiral Proudmouth had asked her to look into his daughter to confirm that she was, in fact, gay, so he could write her out of his will, Jessica knew there was no chance in hell that she was going to do it.
Though, that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to take his money while she was at it. She would, of course, be billing him hourly. And because the case was turning out to be more complicated than she had originally thought it would, she clearly needed some help with it, so he would have to pay for her to consult with someone else while she was at it.
Which is why Veronica was standing next to her, wearing a matching blue Habitat for Humanity shirt. Jessica’s jeans were covered in dirt, but she hadn’t broke a sweat yet. Super strength apparently came in handy when it came to digging out foundations, as it turned out. “I’m glad you’re here,” Jessica said. “I don’t think I’d be able to handle this very difficult investigation without you.”
While Jessica had yet to break a sweat, Veronica was drenched in it. It was the good kind of sweat though. Proof of hard work. And hell who wouldn’t want to get paid for doing some good in the world? Of course Veronica wished she had more time to volunteer in general but she had bills to pay and a kid to feed.
“No sweat,” Veronica replied with a smirk as she wiped her brow full of sweat. “It’s a real tough one. Might take a few weeks.”
“Months even,” Jessica agreed, grinning. “I don’t know how long I can keep this up, but I plan to until Proudmouth figures things out and gives me the boot at least,” Jessica said. She wasn’t sure what would happen then, but she figured that she’d cross that bridge when she came to it.
“Fine by me.” Veronica replied taking a long sip of water. “I have nowhere to be the next few months.” Other cases sure. But it wasn’t like she was going out of town or anything. Unless baby daddy tried to spring a trip on her. But honestly right now she’d much rather get paid to build houses.
“I was thinking after we finished this house, I’d volunteer at an AIDS foundation,” Jessica said. She couldn’t think of much more that would piss Proudmouth off more, except maybe at an immigration centre. She’d looked into him, like she did all her clients when she took on a new job, and she was just as certain that that would get under his skin too.
“You know I’m there,” Veronica replied with a smirk. “I wish I had a douchebag client I could take advantage of.” Granted a good chunk of her clients were douchebags. But none were so fucked up that they wanted to find out their daughters sexual orientation for the purposes of their will.
“It doesn’t happen very often,” Jessica said. In fact, this was a first for her. But she figured that if she didn’t take the job, someone else would, and that other person might actually do what they were getting paid for. “Anway, I’m doing my job very diligently. I would never take advantage of a client’s trust like that,” she said, with a bit of a smirk.
“Oh, no. Of course not,” Veronica took another sip of water putting her bottle down. “You’re going to have to get me more info on the guy. In case he ever comes knocking on my door.” Which when Jessica didn’t actually turn up anything, he just might.
“I can send you everything I’ve dug up later today,” Jessica said, and then realized what she had said. “Pun not intended.”
“Perfect,” Veronica replied with a smirk. “Now, help me put up this wall.” Or you know, Jessica could do most of it herself with that strength of hers, but Veronica could at least pretend she was helping.
Jessica grinned, and with one hand managed to lift up the wall, giving Veronica a couple of seconds to at least pretend she was helping, and then putting it into place. “At this rate, we’ll be done this house in no time,” she said. Which just meant she could move onto her next project.
