WHO: Wanda Maximoff & Peter Quill
WHERE: A nice restaurant
WHEN: April 1st (ish)
WHAT: Wanda and Peter have a nice meal and talk.
WARNINGS: Peter's being awkward.
STATUS: Complete.
"Pretty cool place, hey?" Peter was not usually one for fancy restaurants, or anything that wasn't beer, but he'd seen this place while out for a random drive and something about the smells enticed him. There was no way he'd ask Yondu -- the older man would probably laugh at him and make him go make a sandwich or something.
"Thanks for coming with me. I didn't know who else to drag here, and I thought you'd appreciate it, since, well, college student and all." Peter gave her a grin and leaned back in his chair. He didn't mean it in a bad way. He genuinely thought that as a student, she was probably studying all the time, and didn't have the chance to get out at all.
Having a nice dinner -not necessarily an expensive dinner- was a change for Wanda. She’d made dinner with Hayley a few times during their bonded experience, but when she was on her own, in her small kitchen, she didn’t really make a lot of anything. Peter inviting her out to try this restaurant was a nice change in her schedule too. “It’s very smart.” She rather appreciated the menu, how quirky and modern it was, and why she’d ended up with deep-fried awesomeness as they called it.
“A break from books and reports is nice,” although she did appreciate the thought, she didn’t think Peter would need to drag her anywhere honestly. “I can’t really remember the last time I ate somewhere that wasn’t surrounded by books.” So yes, it was rather nice to be out, eating somewhere that wasn’t a dorm or kitchen or the library sneaking a sandwich in. “The company just makes it better."
Peter couldn't help the smile across his face. He really enjoyed spending time with Wanda. She was just so real. He didn't think she would chew him out and spit him out, which was probably why things would never go more than them being friends. He didn't want to see her change, and he had a bad habit of bringing out the worst in people. "Books are cool. I wish I was more of a reader. I read a lot, you know, in prison, but it was like ...the same five books over and over again. I think I did a book every six months or something. Not the fastest reader either. Do you read for fun or just school? and what are you studying? Did I ask you this already? Sorry if I did."
"So long as you enjoy what you are reading, I don't think it matters what you read." Wanda enjoyed the knowledge that came with reading, the accomplishment of finishing something, she like the fantasy worlds she could fall into as well. She wasn't massively personable either, as much as Wanda tried, she didn't make friends easily, a little too shy, a little too withdrawn. She found it difficult to put herself out there. "I enjoy reading, the same way people watch television, I would prefer to read."
Although she liked some movies and shows, she would sooner read a book than go to the movies. "I'm studying micro-biology and molecular engineering," she didn't think Peter and she had talked about school, most of the time, they were discussing every day things, and she didn't mind that. "I'm hoping to progress into nanotechnology, but it depends on a few factors." Like the Stark scholarship, the one she was sure she stood at least a chance of getting and it helped her feel a little hopeful that she wasn't going to lose her future due to money.
"But it's okay not to ask, it's a little boring to most people."
Those were not concepts he even understood. Micro-biology? Maybe the study of small things, that sounded about right. Molecular engineering though ... Peter gave a low appreciative whistle. "Damn girl, you're smart!" Not that he expected otherwise, but still. It seemed important that he say something now. "What kind of factors do you need before going with the nanobots?" Although he didn't say it, he did have some experience with nanos -- in fact, in his dreams, he knew he had a mask that seemed to be fully nanotech, along with rocket boots. "Because those things? Super cool."
Cue a grin
"Like you. You're not boring at all. I like listening to you talk."
A small shrug came with the mention of her being smart, Pietro always called her that, and she knew she was smart, obviously she was given how well she did in school and college. But other people noticing it tended to make her blush a little. “Um, well, I am around about average in my class, but yes, I am good at science and math.” She managed all right in other areas, enough to manage rather well in a country where her first language wasn’t the most widely spoken. “I just need to finish this semester with good enough grades and then write my thesis for progressing into the amalgamation of the sciences towards nanotechnology.” Although her end focus was of course going to be bionanotechnology and its applications in medical science. But that would be a lot more boring to discuss.
“But I am glad that I am not boring. It’s nice to talk about things with you."
Peter leaned back in his chair, smiling and shaking his head. "See? S-M-R-T. You da bomb, babe."
It slipped out before he could catch it, and his eyes widened slightly. "Oh hey, sorry about that. I don't wanna offend or nothing, just kinda got out there and yeah." He rubbed at his head before giving a wry smile. "Wanda. Your name is Wanda. I should use that instead."
Wanda gave a small shake of her head, "I know that you know how to spell smart, Peter."
It took her a few moments to work out what Peter was apologising for before she just ruefully chuckled, "It is fine, I understand that American's use affectionate terms of endearment like that." There were people at school who called her 'chick' and 'love', and she dealt with that from people she didn't consider friends. "But please don't be offended if I never get up to calling you 'dude'," because it felt weird. "Just avoid 'kiddo', I do not like that one."
Peter had to laugh at that one. "Kiddo is a bad one, I agree. That would make all this extra creepy, and I'm trying to avoid that. Also, s-m-r-t is a reference to a Simpsons episode, and mayyyybe, now that I think about it, kiddo IS the right word for you. God, you're so young," he grinned. It was moments like this that reminded him of that, and not in a bad way. Peter's head was all over the place these days, what with Evie and Katherine and work and just so much.
That's why dinner was so nice. A relaxing change with a friend.
"And if you can stay away from calling me dumbass, life will be peachy. I hear that one enough from my old man." He chuckled though.
“It is hardly creepy, but I do like to avoid being likened to a child, since I am not.” She constantly needed to remind people that she was a grown woman, and her naivety was largely because of the culture shift. “I do not watch cartoons I am afraid, I wouldn’t get that reference.” Since she was still in her early twenties, something considered young in America, she just shrugged slightly. “I suppose I am, but age doesn’t exactly dictate much.”
She was young, but she lived far too much already, seen enough to have lived longer than some of those she was in college with. Throwing in the dreams, it was like another layer of too much.
“You are not dumb, you shouldn’t let people talk to you like that.” And Wanda wouldn’t even think about calling Peter that.
Peter shrugged good-naturedly. "I'm not worried about being called a dumbass. I barely finished high school, never did bother with anything else. So it's all good."

A little while later, after dinner was done, Peter felt like he didn't quite want the evening to end. It'd be fun, just relaxing, chatting, no agenda, nothing. Wanda was always a breath of fresh air. "So....do you have to get back to studying?," he asked, from his spot in the driver seat. The truck was clean, for once, and some music was playing quietly, not blared like it would have been if he was alone. "Or do you wanna hang out some more?"
While it wasn’t too cold, Wanda still settled peacefully in the cab of Peter’s truck, legs crossed at the ankles while she pulled her shawl around her shoulders, almost like heat was needed. Technically, she was meant to be studying almost all the time at the moment, she had a few exams coming up, and she wanted to finish a project early to get some feedback, but she so rarely went out to do anything fun either.
“I am having a night off,” and she didn’t think it was a bad thing to have those, nights off, if she could relax with Peter. “So would hang out for a while longer, I very much enjoyed dinner, and your company.” Peter was good at helping her just relax and chill out for a while. “Would you like to go somewhere for a while to, as they say, chill out?"
Peter looked over at Wanda and smiled. It was exactly what he was hoping for. It was so nice to spend time with her. "Yeah. Chilling out would be great. I know where we can go too. Wanna pick a song?" He'd take her to one of his favourite spots, sans pot of course, to get a view of the city lights. "Don't worry -- I won't judge you too hard if you pick a bad song."
