Tyler had had a good two years in his apartment. It was nearly two years to the day, if he thought about it, so maybe it was fitting that it was time he moved back home. There was a part of him that didn’t particularly want to go, or to give up his freedom. That was the part of him that was wholey from California, the part of him that had never gotten along with either of his parents.
But there was another part too. The dream part, that had grown much closer with his mother once his father was out of the picture. The part of him that had lost her just when things had become good between them. That part of him wanted to go back home, wanted to be there for his mother in her time of grief, and wanted to help build their current relationship to something closer to the one in the dreams. And that was the part of him that was going to win out.
He heard Caleb approaching the door long before Caleb knocked, but he waited for that knock before going to answer the door. “Hey,” he said, grinning. “Caleb, right? I’m Tyler,” he said, offering a hand for a handshake.
Now that Caleb was apparently staying in Orange County for more than just a few weeks, it was time he got a place. When he saw someone post about subletting their place for cheap? It was too good to pass up. Hell, if he believed in fate and shit like that he might even say it was destiny. But he didn’t.
There was no hiding it, Caleb was pretty excited to see the apartment. He had never really had a place of his own. Not that this would be his own, but it was about as close as Caleb was going to get. He even arrived at Tyler’s a little early, knocking on the door and surprised at how fast the other man answered. “Yeah,” Caleb replied reaching out to shake Tyler’s hand. “Nice to officially meet you.”
“Likewise,” Tyler said, taking Caleb’s hand. He ushered the other man into the apartment, closing the door behind him. “This is it. Nice open concept.” The second bedroom, located under Tyler’s the platform that Tyler called his bedroom, had walls and a door, as did the bathroom, but the rest of the apartment sprawled open before them. A kitchenette stood near the front door, and several large windows lined the wall, letting in the natural light from outside.
Caleb looked around. He didn’t exactly need to walk around for a full tour. It was all out in the open and Caleb was able to easily see it from where he stood. It was weird to think that this could be his place for awhile at least.
“It’s nice,” Caleb commented not wanting to seem over excited. “You sure you want to give it up?”
“I’m not giving it up,” Tyler said, grinning. “That’s why I’m subletting it.” He gave it another once over. It would be sad to move out, even if it was just temporary. “But yeah, right now, I think it’s better if I move back home. Lately it’s just been… a lot. It’ll be nice to be back home for a while.”
“Point made,” Caleb replied with a smirk. Again he didn’t really know what to say on Tyler’s home front. He didn’t know what having a family was like. What needing to go home to them was life. So he just kept the conversation moving. “How much?”
“How much you got?” Tyler asked. Tyler had never needed much in the way of money, and it seemed like Caleb probably did. If he took a bit of a loss on rent, well, it was no big deal if it meant that he could keep the apartment in the long run.
“Not much,” Caleb replied with a frown. He definitely didn’t have enough for this place if he was trying to rent it. But maybe this Tyler guy would cut him a break? Doubtful though. Caleb wasn’t the type that caught breaks. “I could afford $1250, maybe $1300.”
“Well, that sounds like a deal to me,” Tyler said, holding out his hand for a handshake. The best part was, that was only a couple hundred less than what he was paying right now anyway.
’Really?’ Caleb almost asked but kept himself from saying it. He didn’t want to seem too eager. “Deal,” he went with instead reaching out to shake Tyler’s hand.
