Rose wasn’t a big smoker, but she had done it on occasion. The thought of smoking with Katou sounded hilarious, so she had to give it a try. She had dug through her pantries and fridge, finding all the right ingredients to making chocolate chip cookies. She was impressed that all she was missing was baking soda. She gave Katou a quick text, hoping he’d see it in time but figuring if he didn’t, it wasn’t the end of the world. She was happy to find she had a bunch of things to eat as she only remembered wanting to eat everything in sight last time she smoked. Maybe they could do delivery...she wondered how much more delicious chips would be high.
It wasn’t long until she heard a knock at the door and went to answer, pulling her hair up in a ponytail. “Hey!” She beamed at Katou, happy he made it over, drugs or no. “So what are the chances I could convince you to decorate a tree once we’ve smoked?”
Katou had rolled a few joints before he left his house, and slipped them into his cigarette case for safe keeping. It would definitely save time over needing to roll things at Rose’s place.
Katou’d never been much of a baker. He enjoyed cooking, and was pretty good at it. But baking? Well, that was a little girlie, as far as he was concerned. Besides, if he ever wanted cookies or brownies, he could just buy them from the store whenever he wanted.
But getting baked and baking, that was an entirely different story. It actually sounded like fun, and Katou was in dire need of fun these days. He also had his blond hair tied back in a ponytail, and was wearing a white t-shirt with a large cross decorating the front of it. His blue jeans were tattered.
“Zero,” he said, stepping into her house and out of habit removing his shoes before he took more than a couple of steps inside. “I don’t do Christmas, Blondie.”
She gave him a pouty face, even though she knew it wouldn't work on him. “Fine, I get it, I get it. But I hope you know I’ll always ask, every year.” Hey, it could be their tradition! She shut the door behind him and pulled him into the kitchen. “Did you get my text? Did you bring the baking powder?” She showed him the spread she had set out, as well as the ingredients for the cookies.
“What’d you bring for us?” she asked, practically bouncing in anticipation.
“Yeah, I got it,” Katou said, tossing the shopping bag unceremoniously onto her counter. He’d been en route when he’d received the text, but luckily the grocery store hadn’t been out of his way. He’d also added a couple of dark chocolate bars to the bag to snack on while they did the baking.
“I also got the baking powder,” he said with a wink, pulling out his cigarette case and producing one of the joints. “I didn’t know you smoked.”
“Cheers!” Rose grabbed the baking powder and added it to her cluster of ingredients. She glanced back at him with the comment and rolled her eyes. “I don’t...I mean, not a lot. I’ve done it a few times here or there.” She turned back to look at him, pulling herself up to sit on one of her counters, watching as he took his case out. “Is it a regular habit of yours to smoke?” Which might have been for the best. Not being a casual smoker herself, she didn’t really know what her limit was. Better to have someone around that knew what he was doing.
“Yeah, couplea times a week,” Katou said. Nothing excessive, he thought, though it did make watching movies more entertaining and sometimes helped him just chill out and play music to himself. He made a conscious effort to not let it become a daily habit. Nothing that would make him long for his junkie days, at least.
He put the joint between his lips and lit it, taking a couple of puffs before handing it over to Rose. “How ‘bout cookies? You bake ‘em often?”
Rose copied what Katou did, not wanting to go too hard too fast. She shrugged at his question, handing the joint back to him. “Kinda. Sometimes? I mean, it can’t be that hard, right?” She usually got the pre-made cookies you just had to lay on a cookie sheet, something that would have been perfect for their current extracurricular. But she had thought it would be fun to try and make ‘em from scratch and where was the harm?
“I have a recipe on my phone and everything!” She pulled it out and flipped to the screen where she had bookmarked the recipe. “Should we get started?”
“Yeah, we might as well, if we’re gonna wanna snack on these later,” Katou said, grinning. He’d baked cookies before, though not often, and he didn’t think it would take that much time or be very difficult.
“Just tell me whatta do, Blondie.”
Rose eagerly handed him her phone and began the direction of measuring and pouring various ingredients. She wasn’t sure when the pot began to run its course, but she soon realized she hadn’t spoken in...how long was it now? She went to look at her phone, but couldn’t remember where she had put it. She glanced at Katou.
“Do you know where my phone is?”
Katou glanced up from the phone in his hand and scanned the counter for Rose’s phone. Then he shrugged. “Not a clue,” Katou said. “Maybe you left it in the living room?” he suggested.
Rose frowned, sure she had just had it. Was this it? Was it happening? “Maybe…” she said, very slowly and turned to check the living room. She felt like she was moving in slow motion and was wondering if she actually was. She may have been moving a bit strangely, but it wasn’t necessarily slow.
By the time she came back, she looked confused. “It’s not in there!” She looked at Katou and realized he was holding it.
“Wait!” She squinted at him. “How’d you get my phone??”
“Huh, this is your phone, isn’t it?” Katou asked, grinning impishly. “Guess I shouldn’t have texted all those people after all. Here you go,” he said, and lobbed it gently at her. That out of his hands, he took the cookies that they’d measured out on the baking pan and slid it into the oven. “Alright,” he said. “You wanna watch a movie or something?”
“Yeah, sure, why not?” Rose shrugged, looking down at her phone to input the timer. Except...she did it on her calculator. Not realizing the mistake, she turned it off and tucked it into her jeans. “Why kinda movies do you like? Anything but horror, please.”
Katou frowned. “Not even fun campy horror?” Katou asked, which was his personal favourite type of movie. “But fine.” It didn’t take him long to find Edward Scissorhands, which was one of his all-time favourites, pulled out another joint for the two of them, and settled in.
It wasn’t until the end of the movie that Katou realized that they had, possibly, forgotten something. But given that Rose had set a timer for the cookies, he couldn’t imagine how they had missed it. He didn’t think he was high enough to have forgotten that. “How long are cookies supposed to take again?”
Rose just shook her head, incling no, campy horror was not ok. She was sure she could handle it on a regular basis, but maybe not right now. She felt like she was sitting in slow motion as she settled in for the start of the movie.
At the end, while the credits were still rolling, Rose looked at him and tried to focus, squinting at him a little. That felt like a very short movie, she was sure the cookies wouldn’t be done by then. She glanced down at her phone and saw that she had typed in the time on her calculator.
At the same exact time, the fire detector started to go off.
“Shit!” Rose jumped up from the couch and stumbled against her coffee table. “Ow, ow ow!” She hobbled into the kitchen, seeing black smoke pour out of her oven. “Ohmygodohmygodohmygod!” She opened it up and saw a small fire on the cookie sheet and yelped, closing it again. “KATOU WHAT DO WE DO?”
Well, so much for that pleasant buzz. With the fire in front of him, Katou sobered up pretty quickly. “Run the tap,” he snapped at Rose, and then he opened the oven door. Using his right hand to fan the black smoke from his face, he used his left to grab the pan and pull out out of the oven. The flames occasionally licked at his fingers, though he couldn’t feel any of it. Quickly, he brought the pan over to the sink and dumped the whole thing in.
Rose wasn’t very helpful as Katou seamlessly threw the burning pan into the sink to quash the fire. It wasn’t until the smoke alarms started going off that Rose shook herself to action, running around to open all the windows and turn on the few fans she had in the apartment.
“Well,” she said, using a potholder to fan the smoke through the air. “Guess I can’t bake and be baked.” She gave him an apologetic look. “Thanks for acting so fast.”
Katou sighed, staring sadly down at the charred mess in the sink. They didn’t even resemble cookies anymore, and his fingertips, still human looking thanks to his glamour, were blackened by the flames. “Shit luck,” he muttered, and then turned to Rose. “Beats having the house burn down at least. But I’m pretty sure this means you own me real cookies at some point.”
Rose grinned, pleasantly surprised at his rather good humor about it. “Yeah, I promise I’ll get you some. Probably better to get the store bought kind though.” She looked at the sink where the pan was sitting. “Shit, are you alright?” She nodded her head to his hands.
