But do you meet every new network person for coffee like this?
Who: Korrasami
What: Meeting for Koffee
When: March
Where: A nice coffee place
Status: Complete
rating: PG for disasterbis
Asami leaned back in the seat of her car, staring at the coffee shop with some amount of trepidation. She wasn’t sure if Korra was there yet, and she was also second guessing choosing the Cobra. Was it too flashy? Too roary? No, Korra would like roary, and it would fight the prissy rich girl image she typically exuded.
And was her hair good? Her hair was good, loose and flowing in perfect locks as usual. Okay, was she wearing the right clothing? Was it too casual? To fancy? Was she showing too much cleavage? Not enough cleavage? Was her make-up game on point? Oh of course her make-up game was on point. Asami pushed her breasts up a little, frowning, then lifted her hands and rubbed her temple.
She shouldn’t be this nervous, but this was Korra. And she knew almost nothing about the Korra of the waking world beyond what she’d managed to google. Asami didn’t know how she’d react to anything and she’d been burned so many times already. Buffy and Kit and Lena (and god Lena still hurt).
If she fucked it up with Korra, with the literal girl of her dreams, she was going to give up on relationships forever. Though for the moment, she just desperately wanted to be Korra’s friend.
Of course, that was how it had started in the dreams, so that was probably a good start too.
“Fuck.” Asami got out of the car, closing the door and running her hands along the predictably red roof. “Okay, it’s just coffee. And maybe bagels. Wear your makeup like armor and weaponize your hair and you’ll be fine.”
As far as Korra was concerned, this was just coffee and an egg sandwich. Asami hadn't called it a date, like an official one. If she had, it definitely hadn't registered as such. Korra had done enough googling to know who exactly Asami Sato was, and that was way out of her league, assuming she was even ready to date anyone right now.
Which she wasn't.
So she sidled on up to the coffee shop wearing jeans, a blue flannel overshirt with a soft grey shirt underneath, and sneakers that were so well worn they were falling apart. There was eyeliner around her eyes that might have been applied 4 days ago given how mussed up it was, and she had a messenger bag slung over her shoulder that had definitely seen better days.
In short, she was a disaster. Thankfully, she had her flashiest sunglasses on to hide some of the mess her face was. Asami, in all of her glory, was easy to spot, and Korra tried to play it cool as she waved at her. "Hey."
It was just coffee, and bagels, and not a date. Asami would be the first to agree with that despite her own wishes. One thing Asami was consistent about was never pushing someone into something; though she’d spent a full three years regretting some of that in her dreams and was pretty sure not pushing enough had been half the reason things hadn’t worked out with Lena.
She might still be a little grumpy over Lena.
But all that washed away when she saw Korra. Asami hadn’t known what she’d expected and yet she got exactly what she’d expected and then some. Tossing her hair over her shoulder she pushed away from her car with her hip and smiled at Korra, hoping Korra hadn’t noticed that she’d been staring a little too long. “Hey! You must be Korra.”
"And judging by the extremely expensive car, you must be Asami." Korra took off the aviators she was wearing and held out her hand, awkwardly unsure if they were shaking them or what. This was probably a more casual meeting than that, given... it was just coffee and bagels.
Korra was pretty good at looking more confident than she was, though, and she grinned at Asami. "It's nice to meet you... though, I kind of thought you were the type who was too busy to bribe people into getting coffee?"
“That’s me,” Asami said, patting the roof of her muscle car. It might be a gas guzzler but she did try to make up for it in other ways. She reached out, taking Korra’s hand and mostly succeeding in shoving her excitement somewhere deep and ignorable. Asami had always been a very touch person when she had friends and with Korra in particular in the dreams, even before the whole emotions and dating thing.
“I like your eyeshadow, it’s really cute.” And hot.
She let go of Korra’s hand reluctantly, and nodded towards the coffee shop. “I like meeting new people, and I’ve learned to balance work and not-work. Let’s go in.”
Fighting the urge to take Korra’s hand, Asami started for the door.
"I'm wearing eyeshadow?" Korra blinked her eyes a few times, before remembering that time a few days ago that she'd smudged some eyeliner on. "Oh. Well... sure. But do you meet every new network person for coffee like this?"
It seemed like an important question to ask as she followed Asami into the shop. And not just because of who Asami was, but for another reason that she couldn't quite place. As if they were familiar to each other somehow, even though Korra was certain she'd have remembered it if they'd met before.
Of course, she was also capable of being wrong. But she figured she'd keep asking questions about it until she was either satisfied or she'd pissed Asami off. "You just seem to know me somehow. Weird, right? This place smells amazing, though."
“Only the really interesting ones,” Asami replied, glancing over her shoulder at Korra in an almost coy manner.
Turning her attention to the front of her, Asami made a face at herself. Play it cool play it cool!
Her usual drink was about as fancy as one could get and barely qualified as coffee. Once they’d found a seat she smiled at Korra, wrapping her hand around her cup. “Don’t laugh at my order. I subsist on whatever coffee is available when I’m in the workshop in R&D so I like to treat myself when I’m out.”
Korra nearly tripped over her own feet as Asami looked back at her, and her mind blanked out through so much of the ordering process that she felt like a neanderthal trying to grunt words at the barista instead of actually speaking. But she ended up with a breakfast sandwich that smelled delicious, though it was served on some kind of crusty roll instead of a bagel.
Her own coffee was iced, strong, with just enough cream and sugar in it. She'd gone for a little drizzle of caramel, but nothing as fancy as she sometimes liked to treat herself. Not today, anyway. Some part of Korra wanted to make some kind of impression on Asami after all, though she didn't really know what impression that was.
Sitting there with one of her hands on the breakfast sandwich, she shrugged a shoulder. "Hey, you do you, right? Sometimes I like going really fancy with my coffee. It's a treat for me, instead of getting a donut or a pastry or something. Though this one bakery someone works at has these flaky looking ones with chocolate on them that he promises aren't too bad. I want to try that place next."
Asami tucked some hair behind her ear, trying her damndest to not look at Korra in any way that could be described as flirtatious. Korra was just so... So gorgeous and Korra that it was hard not to stare, let alone not flirt. But she really wanted to befriend her, if nothing else. Being a little romance shy, Asami did not want to ruin a friendship by being hasty.
“We’ll have to check it out then. If you’d like.”
"Slow down, there. I'm already carbo loading." Korra lifted up the hand not on the sandwich and pointed directly at the sandwich. "See? You got me into the eating place of your choice, and we're sitting around, eating. No need to offer to go somewhere else and eat more food. Unless we're going to burn off all the extra energy somehow."
Korra didn't mean that in any kind of way, though the second she finished saying it her mind tumbled straight into the gutter and she flailed her hand. "I mean- No, Like a walk, or... a run, or... you know, exercise. Yes. Walking, walking is good. Especially after all of that caffeine, since it wakes you up. Lots of energy..."
Her lips clamped shut and she tried looking anywhere else but at Asami in that moment. Her facial expressions were especially self-deprecating.
Asami remembered how much she could listen to Korra babble and was remembering how much Korra could actually babble around her. It gave her a small bit of hope that she promptly ignored.
But even though she ignored that, she couldn’t help it; Asami’s face flushed and she smiled and tossed her hair and replied, “Usually I wait for a second or third date before burning off excess energy.”
Taking a breath, she reached over and patted Korra’s hand. “We can take a walk. I’m just… kind of excited.” She quickly added, “To show you around. I mean. Since you’re new here. I don’t usually get to do that sort of thing.”
“Well, I am definitely excited about doing all of that walking around. With you, around here.” Korra agreed, emphatically. There was still breakfast sandwich to eat, and she decided that it was a great time to keep her mouth busy with chewing on that.
There were a number of ways Asami would like to keep Korra’s mouth busy, but she contained herself and tried to be less of a mess. “Let's eat and then we can figure out what to do next.”
