Who: Martha Jones & Rose Tyler What: Hanging Out When: Backdated: Early March Where: Martha's Place Rating: Family Friendly Status: Complete!
Martha had been missing Rose quite a lot, especially over Christmas, so when she had received the other Companion’s texts that she was coming back, Martha had been extremely excited. It was strange when she thought about how jealous she’d been, in the dreams, whenever The Doctor would talk about Rose, but here, in the waking world they were such good friends. She knew of course that it had had to do with her own feelings for The Doctor, which she had eventually gotten over, considering that in the end she’d married Mickey.
The two companions had met up shortly after Rose had come back to catch up and have drinks and now they were getting together again, this time at Martha’s for dinner, drinks and Netflix. Martha had ordered chinese food and was now waiting for both the food and Rose to arrive.
When Rose had first come to Orange County, she wasn’t sure if she could actually picture this place as her home. But it was people like Martha who helped her make it her home. She had been one of the first people she had reached out to once she came back and they fell into their old routine once more. Rose decided she didn’t like being an adult, because it made it difficult to meet up with friends; different schedules, especially with her and Martha. Between her two jobs and Martha’s work with the hospital and her super undercover place, Rose would take any moment they’d have free together.
She knocked on the door, rocking back on her heel as she waited for her answer. She tried the handle just in case, but found it locked. Rude.
Hearing the knock at the door, Martha set down the wine glasses she’d been carrying out of the kitchen and headed towards the door. Unlocking it, she smiled upon seeing her friend there, “Hey! Come on in.” Martha moved aside to let Rose in then closed the door behind her, “Want something to drink? I have a couple bottles of wine and also some beer.”
Rose grinned as Martha opened the door, stepping in and loving the type of welcome she got. “Wine sounds great!” She said, stepping inside after her friend. She shrugged her coat off and kicked off her shoes, leaving her things in the hallway. She shuffled after Martha, glancing around her home.
“How was work today?”
Martha filled both wine glasses and handed one to Rose then gestured towards the living room, “Work was fine. I was at the clinic today, so I got to see some patients, which I miss when I’m at the Agency.” Considering that most dreamers knew about the Agency in one form or another, Martha didn’t really see a reason to keep it a secret. After all, in the dreams they always talked about UNIT and Torchwood and those were supposed to be super secret organizations as well, “How about you?”
Rose raised her glass is a sort of toast to say thank you for the refreshment as she downed half of it and held it back out for Martha to top her off once more. She gave her a cheeky grin, taking a seat at her table and leaning back in her chair. “Been working a bit more there, yeah?” She knew OF it but didn’t know much more than it was there to help people with the strangeness that seemed to plague Orange County. And any organization that was willing to help with the weirdness had to be good. “Nothing really weird has happened recently! Something while I was away though, right?” She shrugged her shoulders to the question she asked.
“At Baxter’s, it was alright. Kinda slow.” Slow days were a blessing and a curse. She got to goof off and mess around with some new recipes, but then it made the time drag by. “Oh! Did I tell you Neena and I are going to re-open the Inferno? I’m gonna reach out to Dan and see if he can help out too!” People might have thought it was strange for her to reach out to a potential rival, but she had directed all their old customers his way when the Inferno had gone up with all the sentient Peeps that had attacked last year.
“I’ve been trying to split my time evenly between The Agency and the clinic unless there’s been something going on in the OC.” Martha said as she topped off Rose’s drink and took the seat across from her. “And of course something happened while you were away. Would it be the OC if something didn’t happen? If you’re feeling left out though, I’m sure something new will happen soon.” She smirked and took a sip of her own wine.
“Oh really? That’s great. Make sure to let me know when the grand opening is. I’ll get Jemma, Cosima and Clara to come.” Martha was happy to have the group of girlfriends that she did, because they were almost always up for getting together for drinks and now that Rose was back she was sure that the blond Companion would be joining them in the future.
Rose couldn’t help but laugh. “Unless something’s goin’ on in the OC? Girl, that’s gotta be every other week, innit?” She grinned, giving a small cheers to her friend before taking a sip. “Yeah, I guess I shouldn’t count my luck too much. What’s the next holiday coming up?” She thought about it a moment. “St. Patrick’s day? Do you think everything will turn green or something like that?” Maybe they could make it into a game...what weird thing would happen next??
“Yeah, of course! You and all the girls are welcome. But I have a feeling we’re a bit far off from a grand opening.” Rose made a mental note to text Dan later and really get the ball rolling!
“So what’re we gonna do tonight? Keep it slow and lazy?”
Martha laughed and nodded before taking a sip from her own glass, “It feels like it sometimes, doesn’t it?” In actuality weeks or even months usually went by between OC weirdness, but it certainly did feel like something happened every week.
“God, I hope not. Everything turning green would just be strange,” Martha had seen a lot of strange things over the last couple of years, but that would be just plain odd. “I ordered chinese food. I figure when it gets here we can eat it in the living room and watch a movie then just hang out after.”
“Sounds like my kinda night!” It was almost surprising how many lazy nights Rose was beginning to enjoy more and more. Was this what it was like getting older? You’re not that old she chided herself, but she still found herself happily taking a seat next to her friend, her wine glass cradled in her hand.
“So, any new dates lately?” Rose took a sip of her wine glass, but she looked at Martha over the rim, wiggling her eyebrows.
Martha enjoyed going out as much as the next girl, but every now and then she enjoyed a quiet evening at home, especially when those evenings included hanging out with one of her closest friends, “No. No new dates. I can’t even remember the last time I went on a date, to be honest.” It wasn’t as if she was waiting for Mickey to show up or anything like that, but she was just so busy these days that dating wasn’t something that she had much time for. “What about you?”
Rose grinned, knowing the conversation would turn back to her. “Things with York are going pretty well,” she said, unable to suppress the smile the grew on her face. “We had a bit of a misunderstanding, but we were able to work things out. I think we’re kinda...ya know, dating. Exclusively.” It seemed so childish to talk about officially being boyfriend and girlfriend, but Rose had been excited nonetheless.
“Maybe he has someone he could set ya up with! You know, like a blind date!”
Martha smiled and took another sip of her wine, “I’m happy to hear that things are going well.” It was nice to know that her friend was happy. However, when the suggestion of a blind date came up, Martha shook her head, “No offense, but I’m not really the blind date type.” It wasn’t that Martha had anything against blind dates, but she liked to know who she was going on a date with beforehand. “Thanks for the offer though.”
Rose laughed, shrugging her shoulders a bit. “Well, if you ever change your mind, let a girl know! Or we don’t even have to make it anything official, just a group of friends to hang out with! You like York, yeah?”
Martha nodded, “Of course I like York. I’m happy that you’ve found someone who makes you happy.” Martha knew all about Rose’s history in the dreams, when it came to Mickey and the Doctor and while she had ended up with a version of The Doctor, she wondered if Rose had actually been happy after that. She’d only seen her once, in the dreams, and it wasn’t as if they’d gossiped about the Meta-Doctor and Rose’s life in the other timeline.
At that moment the doorbell rang and Martha excused herself to get their dinner. Coming back with the bag of Chinese food, she gestured towards the living room, “Shall we go eat and find something to watch?”
Rose jumped at the doorbell, waiting for Martha to come back. She smacked her lips together as the smell of Chinese food wafted through the kitchen. “Yesss, Netflix and Chinese!” Rose laughed as she followed her friend into the living room. It was always good to take a night of rest and relaxation, especially with your best mates!
