Elena hated this. All of this. Waking up and knowing instantly that something was wrong, that she couldn’t stay in her own bed in her own house, and having to race for the door had been a terrible way to begin the day. It was only once she was outside that the dreams really sank in. She was a vampire. They had thought that Klaus being staked spelled death for all of them and she’d made a split second decision to race back to Mystic Falls and say good-bye to everyone. Caroline, Tyler, Stefan, too.

She’d heard how hurt Damon had been. She had finally chosen, and chosen Stefan above him. It always happened that way. He was always second. But it wasn’t just Stefan, it was all of her friends. She couldn’t put Damon above everyone. And then Rebekah standing in the middle of the road had caused Matt to veer off Wickery Bridge. It had been her decision, her request to Stefan to save Matt that had sealed her fate.

She wouldn’t be able to stay outside of her house for long, not without a daylight ring and so she sped to the first place she could think of, staying at the library entranceway until the library opened, then sending out messages to friends and family.

Elena took refuge in the stacks, hiding far away from families looking for books. The children were loud, annoying to someone already on edge. Sliding down in a corner, she hid her face in arms resting on her knees, willing herself to try and remain calm until Caroline could get there.

As soon as Caroline received Elena’s text she was packing up blood bags in a small cooler and heading for the library, while simultaneously texting Freya for help with a ring. At least Elena would be able to go out in the daylight soon. But that wasn’t as big of an issue as the fact that Elena needed to feed. Caroline remembered perfectly well how thanks to Damon’s sire bond Elena could only drink from humans in the dreams. How animals and blood bags made her throw up. She was hoping that hadn’t carried over here, but then Tyler’s sire bond to Klaus had carried over so who knew.

Caroline wasn’t going to give up hope though. At least not until Elena at least tried a blood bag.

Once she got to the library it didn’t take her long to find Elena. Her friend was hiding in the practically abandoned stacks of books people rarely ever searched for. “Elena,” Caroline said softly dropping to her knees beside her best friend. “Here,” she wasted no time grabbing a bag out of the cooler and handing it over. Of course she was sure to use her hearing to make sure no one was close enough around to accidentally see what her best friend was about to do.

Head lifted as she heard Caroline appear, Elena looking quite miserable indeed. “Bathroom,” she shook her head, reminding her friend of their conversation. If the ill effects of blood bags had carried over to Orange County, the last thing Elena wanted was to leave a rather large stain of blood and bile for some hapless librarian to clean up.

Arms folded, hiding the bag as Elena pushed herself up, leading Caroline to the facilities. Luckily they were clear, though she did make sure to bolt the door before ripping the blood bag open, taking a tentative sip from her vampire juice box. Expression uncertain, Elena took another sip. “I’m not sure…”

Well at least Elena wasn’t throwing up. That was a good thing. “How do you feel?” Caroline asked. The first time she drank blood, she thought she would be grossed out but it had actually tasted good. Really good. And the second Caroline drank from the blood bag she had felt better.

A slight pause, Elena shaking her head. She didn’t feel good. In an instant, she’d pushed the blood bag to Caroline, barely making it to the toilet before the bit of blood she had swallowed came back up.

“...I guess it’s not so simple.” Unfortunately,

With her vampire reflexes Caroline managed to hold Elena’s hair back before the actual vomiting started. A frown formed on her face. She had really been hoping that wouldn’t have carried over.

“In the dreams this happened until you fed from a human,” Caroline said still frowning. Thanks to Damon, insisting she needed it straight from the vein. And poor sired Elena had to follow what he said.

The thought made her miserable. “I don’t want to hurt anyone, Care.” That was the last thing Elena ever wanted to do. And it was her biggest fear as a vampire, that she wouldn’t be able to. “How do you control it?”

“I think the longer you go without feeding the harder it is to control,” Caroline replied. Although she had no experience drinking from someone in real life. Only that one time in the dreams where she was freshly turned and didn’t even know what she was doing.

Elena stretched out a hand for Caroline’s, squeezing it tightly. The point was well taken. She supposed she would need to get over her fears at one point or another. “I don’t know how you do it. How you stay calm all the time. I just feel like I’m going crazy.”

“It takes time,” Caroline replied. “You just turned. All your emotions are like on overdrive. When I first turned I went a little crazy too.” Plus she had to relieve the grief of her mom’s death thanks to Tyler compelling it away after the funeral. “Freya should be here soon. Then you can go outside.” And maybe find a human to drink from.

“But it gets better.’ It had to. Because it eternity were going to be like this, Elena would fall on the stake herself. “Thanks, Care. For coming. For being here to help.” While it may have been expected being as close as they were to one another, Elena still appreciated it more than she could say.

“Of course,” Caroline said reaching out to give her friend a hug. “It’s what friends are for.” And she wasn’t planning on going anywhere either.
