It was a usual late night for Logan, as he leaned into the fridge searching for another beer. He’d had no plans except to watch some hockey games he’d DVR’d and never gotten around to, and this required the right kind of drink to go with the game.
For some reason, the beer kept slipping out of reach. When he finally grabbed it the world went sideways, a sound like a rubber band breaking as he crashed into a counter, a knife block landing on him.
In the wrong kitchen. Grunting, he got up and pulled a knife from his thigh, the wound already starting to close. “What the fuck.”
Caleb was happily asleep in his bed. He had a long night at the club and was thrilled to be back in his apartment and in his bed. He was just drifting off into dreamland when he felt something weird. It felt like a tug, but that didn't make any sense. But there it was and quite persistent, so Caleb threw the covers off his body (clad only in pajama pants) and got out of bed. Once his feet were on the floor the tug turned into a yank and suddenly he was being dragged out of his room and into the kitchen.
His eyes settled on the strange man who was at the counter with a knife in his hand. "What the hell?" Caleb didn't know what to do, he could fight, but the strange man had all the weapons near him, "Why are you in my apartment?!" This was not how he wanted his night to go.
“Ain’t sure.” Logan tossed the knife into the sink and held his hands out palm first. Not like he couldn’t handle himself in a fight, but he really wasn’t looking for a fight. Or anything in particular. “Last thing I knew I was at my fridge, then it was like I got yanked into your kitchen.”
He glanced at the counter and the knife block. “Sorry ‘bout the knife. Only a stab wound, I’ll be fine.”
Caleb really didn’t want to fight either and at least the guy got rid of the knife and didn’t seem like he wanted to immediately punch him. He was actually apologetic, which surprised the hell out of Caleb. That’s not normally how a robber acted, right? “Wow - I -- I’m not even sure how to react. I don’t think people typically apologize when they end up in someone’s apartment.”
“Um, do you need a first aid kit? Do you need me to call anyone to help you?” Maybe the guy was just coming out of an influenced stupor and had no idea where he stumbled during it. Caleb just didn’t want to get hurt or hurt the guy for no reason and right now he had zero reason.
“I was in my own five minutes ago,” Logan said, giving another shrug as he looked at his now bloody jeans. Damn. He’d liked that pair.
“It’s fine.” He pried the slice in the fabric open to show the wound had closed. “Jus’ another night in Orange County. Don’t know if you been around or not so this might be a lot more fucked up if you ain’t.”
The strange man was in his own apartment right before showing up in Caleb’s? That made no sense to him especially since he knew this guy was most likely not a neighbor of his. He knew who most of them were.
Then the guy just sliced his jeans and showed a close wound where the knife had just been. Caleb’s eyes went wide and he just stared. His mind wasn’t working - how was that possible?! He fumbled for words, “what the fuck? Wait, did you just heal? Is this a Dream thing?” How was this guy so casual about all this?!
Logan kept a calm expression on his face, though he wished he had that beer he’d been reaching for before he’d ended up in someone else’s kitchen. He waited for a break in Caleb’s … breakdown, before holding his hands up, palm out.
“Yes, an’ yes. I can heal from almost any wound, thanks to my dreams, an’ I’m pretty sure me bein’ in your apartment is the county fuckin’ around with us again. Ain’t the first time somethin’ happened like this an’ if it’s the same as last time you an’ me are gonna have to get cozy for a coupla days.”
Caleb definitely needed a drink. He opened up the fridge and grabbed two beers. He may not have known the other guy had been grabbing a beer at the time he showed up in his apartment, but they both needed one. He handed the beer over with a furrow of his brows as he tried to comprehend the information he was being given.
He twisted the top off and took a long swig. He finished and let out a sigh, “Seriously? So what you do mean that we have to get cozy for a couple days?” He really shouldn’t have joined the network. It was all fine listening to the lies of the craziness that went on, but now being part of the craziness was a whole new thing. He would touch on the healing powers later.
To his credit, Logan made no comment about the kind of beer; beggers can’t be choosers and bad beer was better than no beer. And this wasn’t that bad a brand, so he’d just deal with it.
“We’re stuck together. I could try to walk out that door an’ somethin’ll pull me right back.”
As if to demonstrate, he opened the beer and started for Caleb’s front door, opened it, then closed it and walked back to him. “It’s like a...compulsion. Why don’t you try it, bub.”
“Woah, that’s just way too weird,” Caleb remarked as he watched Logan try to leave and then instantly turned back around when he got too far. He then took Logan’s advice and tried to go walk back to his bedroom and halfway there turned back around for the kitchen.
“Huh, well, that’s definitely not what I was expecting for my day. But if we are truly stuck with each other, my name’s Caleb Danvers. I can make up a spot for you in my spare bedroom,” he offered and stuck out his hand. They may have gotten off on a weird foot, but they had to figure out a way to deal with this until it finished running its course.
“I’m Logan.” Logan took Caleb’s hand in a firm grip and hoped things didn’t get any weirder than this. But he’d been around long enough to know that it was never that simple or never that easy. “An’ thanks for that. I’ve slept in too many bathtubs an’ couches in my life.”
“That definitely sounds like an interesting life you’ve led,” Caleb was sure that he would learn a lot more about Logan during this time stuck together. Being stuck together wasn’t going to be the best thing ever, but they would be able to figure it out and hopefully get along. Caleb took a swig of his beer as he lead the way towards the spare bedroom to get things made up for the man.
“Ain’t sure you’d even believe half of it,” Logan said, following Caleb as he spoke. “Cept pretty sure yo-yoing into your kitchen is about as crazy as any damn thing I could tell you.”
