Who: Martha Jones & Kala Dandekar
What: Random Meet Up
When: Backdated: Just after the Lich King plot
Where: A coffee shop near the Clinic
Rating: Family Friendly
Status: Complete!
Just when life was beginning to seem normal, Martha was reminded of just how not normal her life was now. The weekend’s recent events were the most recent proof of that. Zombies and other creatures had populated the streets so of course she had been compelled to help people and luckily, she had been able to join up with Clara and the guy she’d rescued earlier in the weekend, to help anyone who needed it. While she could have lived without the random invasions, it always made Martha feel even more useful when she could help anyone who had been injured by these events as well as in a way it always reminded her of her dreams, which had stopped quite some time ago.
The strangest part, perhaps, was when the invasions stopped and things went back to normal so easily. While some certainly questioned the things that went on in the county, the people, the non dreamers, always seemed to go back to their daily routines almost as if nothing had happened.
In a way, even the dreamers sometimes acted as if nothing had happened despite the things they knew. Martha had spent the earlier part of the week checking in at the clinic, making sure all was well there before checking back in at the Agency, taking care of things there.
Martha was still going over things that needed to be done at both as she stepped into a coffee shop near the clinic.
Kala didn’t always start her day with coffee, but sometimes it was needed. Especially with all the drama that had gone down over the weekend. Kala had stayed locked in her apartment for the most part. But still it was quite nerve wracking. She didn’t get much sleep.
She also wasn’t looking forward to going into work. For some reason Kala seemed to get stuck with all the menial tasks. She figured she would just have to pay her dues, but it had been a few months now. Kala needed something a bit more stimulating. So yes, coffee to start her day it was.
Kala walked into the shop and did a double take. Amanita? No. She wasn’t going to jump to that conclusion. She just got in line behind the look-a-like wordlessly.
Martha was just finishing sending a text when the other woman got into line behind her. Usually Martha tried to mind her own business when she was out, but something caused her to glance over her shoulder and she immediately recognized her as the woman she’d spoken to on the net earlier in the month who was mentally connected to a group of other people, “Hey. Hi, I don’t know if you remember me, but we spoke recently on the Net.” Even as she said it, Martha knew it sounded a little crazy, but it wasn’t the first time she’d said something to the same degree.
As soon as the woman spoke Kala knew for certain it wasn’t Amanita. Amanita was quite American and this woman had a different accent. Then she spoke of the Network and Kala realized she did know this woman from somewhere. She remembered being confused when Martha told her she was a doctor. This was the second time she was learning that the woman before her was not Amanita. “Right, yes. Martha right?” Kala asked with a small smile though she couldn’t stop staring at the resemblance.
Martha nodded, smiling and extended her hand towards the other woman, “That’s right. And you’re, Kala?” She wasn’t a hundred percent positive, but she was fairly certain that was her name, “It’s nice to meet you in person.” Martha had met so many people on the Network, but there were still many she had never actually met face to face and there was always something different about their interactions with the ones she had physically met.
“Yeah,” Kala replied with a small smile - still staring perhaps a bit too intently at Martha. “That’s me.” Even though she was talking to Martha at the moment she couldn’t help thinking about Amanita. Did she exist in this world somewhere? Did Nomi? Will and Lito did - the rest of them had to, right? Or did they have look alikes running around instead? “Small world,” she finally said trying to bring her focus back to the conversation.
It didn’t escape Martha’s notice that Kala was looking at her a little more intently than was necessary and she couldn’t help but touch her face to check if there was something there, “Is there something on my face?” Normally she might not have asked, but the way Kala was looking at her seemed a little strange.
“What? No, sorry,” Kala gave an apologetic smile. “You just look a lot like someone from…” she paused. Martha was on the network. So she must dream. Right? Kala decided to risk it anyway. “My dreams.”
Martha’s brows rose slightly at that revelation. She’d heard of people sharing faces, but no one had ever told her she looked like someone they knew it in theirs, “Really? What’s her name?” Martha always found other people’s dreams fascinating and she’d already been intrigued by Kala’s before finding out that she had a face twin in the other woman’s dreams.
Kala had to admit she was relieved that Martha was so open to the fact that she looked a lot like Amanita. Kala wasn’t sure she would have the same reaction if someone was staring at her and then said she looked like someone from their dreams. Hopefully she would never come across it. “Amanita,” she said answering Martha’s question. “She’s dating one of the women in my cluster.” Since she had already shared a bit of her dreams with Martha on the network, mostly that she had a telepathic connection with seven other people, her cluster. She figured she would give Martha at least a bit of context as to who Amanita was.
“So that means you’re not linked to Amanita then?” It was such an interesting name. One that Martha never would have imagined for herself. But wasn’t that how these things worked? People got used to their own names and those of their friends and family and couldn’t come to think of them as anything else. “Does she know about the clusters?” Martha could honestly stand here forever and ask Kala question after question about her dreams.
“No,” Kala confirmed. “We aren’t linked.” As far as if Amanita knew? She wasn’t sure. She hadn’t seen anything to say that Amanita did know. But she also didn’t see everything Nomi did. She could have told her girlfriend. “I’m not sure,” Kala replied. “She might.”
“This is all so fascinating. I wonder if there’s really an Amanita out there somewhere,” Martha wondered what it’d be like to run into someone with her face. She wondered if it would feel like having a twin. As they reached the counter, Martha gave her order and paid then moved aside for Kala to place her own coffee order. “Can you feel any of the others from your cluster who aren’t here?”
“No,” Kala replied with a frown. “It’s rather strange considering I was connected to them all in my dreams before I met them. But here it’s only the ones that also live here.”
There were still so many questions that Martha had about Kala’s dreams and her cluster, but she felt bad to be bombarding Kala when they’d only just met in person. She was just so intrigued. She’d thought she’d seen everything when it came to her own dreams, but this was different than anything she’d witnessed while traveling with The Doctor, “Maybe the rest of them will move to Orange County at some point.”
“Maybe,” Kala replied. In a way she hoped they didn’t. This place could be quite dangerous. But on the other hand, now that she knew about them, had dreamed about them, not being connected to them here? It made Kala feel incomplete.
When Martha’s name was called, she picked up her drink, making sure to grab a sleeve for the hot cup, “Well, I’m really glad we finally got to meet in person.” Coffee shops seemed to be the place to run into people from Valarnet, considering the number of people Martha had done just that with over the last few years, “I need to get back to the clinic though. Hopefully we’ll meet up again sometime soon.”
