The morning started off like any other, for Illyana. She brushed off whatever dream she'd just had, woke Clarice up the proper way, took a shower, saw her off to work, and then went to the kitchen for some coffee.
The shop was closed today, and while normally that would mean a huge loss in revenue, as it turned out a lot of people just didn't need emergency magical supplies on a Saturday. She got more business during the week, for some reason. So she'd given herself a day off.
A nice, long day to relax, and enjoy coffee, maybe catch up on some reading... She plunked down at the kitchen table with her coffee mug, and started sifting through the newspaper.
She would probably need help at some point, so she could be open 7 days a week, unless that cost would be less than money lost. Kitty was going to run a program for Illyana to help her figure out her revenue and if the extra time open would be worth the cost of an employee.
Kitty plopped down next to Illyana. She was already fully dressed herself, but looked a little pale. She was going to be taking the twins out later to a museum. But right now it was just the two of them.
"Anything interesting?"
Illyana shook her head and set the papers down, "Nyet, nothing interesting. The comics are not even funny today. It is like the world knew I would take today off and has endeavored to make it the most boring day ever."
She squinted at Kitty, though, getting that same sense she'd had before, that something was off and she couldn't quite place it.
"I thought you were looking at actual news! I'm relieved, dead tree edition is dead."
Kitty plucked the paper out of Illyana's hands and tossed it aside, "Use your phone. More news, better news. And lots of better comics. Life is too short to read crap."
"Da, that it is. I simply sometimes prefer the feeling of real paper against my fingertips. It is easier to read than those tiny screens, too." Illyana scrunched up her nose and pulled her phone out. She felt off, too. There was just something wrong in the kitchen. And it wasn't just that Limbo had layered itself over things like it usually did.
It made her feel restless. She put her phone back down and got up out of her chair, pacing a bit.
"That's what the laptop is for," Kitty protested, but she sat back in her chair. It was too much effort to lean in. She was feeling off and she couldn't explain why. It couldn't be nerves. She wasn't nauseous. She was just... tired now.
Tired was a feeling that Illyana understood. It took a lot more effort to pace the kitchen than she wanted to admit. It brought her back to earlier years, ones she didn't really like to think about.
And that feeling was still itching at her. She stopped and rested her hands on the back of her chair, and stared at Kitty, "You are pale. Are you feeling well? There is something wrong."
"I'm just tired. I haven't slept well. I keep having these broken dreams. I'm locked up somewhere. I don't really understand them, they're too fragmented." That had to be it. She shrugged a shoulder, "I might need a nap before I take the kids out."
"You just woke up and already speaking of naps," Illyana frowned. If she didn't know for a fact that what she had wasn't currently contagious...
But wait. There WAS something. She tilted her head to the side, and stared at Kitty a bit more intently. Then she squinted.
"Well. That's interesting."
"What's interesting?" Kitty got up, and walked over to the fridge. Maybe she just needed some OJ. She poured herself a glass.
Illyana walked up behind Kitty and reached her hand towards the woman's chest, then tilted her head to the side. There. There. There it was.
All she had to do was tug. She mentally did so, and the gleaming hilt of a sword started to appear. It had an unnatural glow to it, and seemed very ornate. Illyana recognized it instantly. She'd been missing this, missing this piece of her for so very long...
She didn't even think twice before she put her hand on the hilt and pulled it out of Kitty the rest of the way. Her soulsword. Her beautiful soulsword. She raised it above her head, and the entire kitchen lit up with a pink light. Limbo faded away.
Tears sprung to her eyes.
Kitty gasped, more in surprise than pain. She braced herself for what came next, the glass hitting the floor and spilling orange juice everywhere as it bounced and rolled.
It felt like being stabbed from the inside out, and a burning sensation spread from the center of her chest and outward to her limbs.
Then the sword was free, and her knees buckled. She slid down the fridge and rested her head against it. She opened her eyes and looked up at Illyana's face.
Her friend was almost glowing.
Sword still aloft, Illyana looked up at it and let the tears flow freely down her face. The light from the sword was reflected in the tears, making the glow even more noticeable.
"God, you're whole."
"I am. I am."
