The press was gathered together in rows of chairs in a conference hall in Las Angeles. The attendance was larger than anyone had expected, and several reporters with cameras and equipment had spilled over into the sides and back of the room. It was less people than Weiss had faced during any of her performances, but she still swallowed a lump of nervousness as she took the stage.
Amycus was standing on the side, having already prepped the crowd for her statement, and she gave him a quick look before setting her cards down on the podium. His look in return was supportive, and she was glad he was there. Having him around these days had been like extra steel shoring up her backbone.
She took a sip of water, adjusted the microphone, and then began her speech.
"Thank you all for coming.
As you are well aware, my father, Jacques Schnee, has been imprisoned for a number of crimes - including my own captivity - since January. This month marks the beginning of the end for the Schnee Diamond Company, as I temporarily take up my father's mantel.
When my Great-Grandfather started this Company, it had a moral compass. It stood for good ideals, like quality workmanship, safe working conditions, customer appreciation, and family. Family in all of its forms, not the limited way in which it recently decided to support.
With my father at the helm, this moral compass ceased to exist. As more and more of his shady dealings come to light, it is clear that my family's comfortable status has been built on the blood of others.
The Schnee Diamond Company is responsible for the destruction of thousands of lives, and Neighborhoods. It has elevated a certain class of people over others, lost its touch with the world around it, and has committed unnumbered crimes in the name of tiny gains to its profit margins. It no longer cares about the people. It only cares for itself.
Any company that operates in such a manner should not be allowed to exist; Especially when the darker truth about its dealings comes to light. This company's name and what it stands for has been changed forever, and I will not try to reclaim it. It deserves its fate.
And so, it is with a heavy heart that I announce that my family's company will be dissolved. I will be staying on to personally oversee the ending of operations. A significant portion of any profits made from the liquidation of our holdings and merchandise will be set aside to start a charity for those this company has disenfranchised. More details about this will be released in the coming months.
On a personal note, I would like to state for the record that I believe in love - and family - in all of its shapes and forms. The past six months under my father's control have been harrowing, and wholly inaccurate. I am not engaged, and if I ever do get married it shall be to a woman.
Thank you for your time, there will be no questions."
The crowd, which had been silent aside from the sounds of various cameras taking pictures, came to a roar as she finished. Never satisfied with the term 'no questions', several voices shouted a dozen of them as Weiss stepped away from the microphone and began her retreat.
Amycus took the podium behind her, and with the firmest voice repeated her words. "No questions."
They weren't getting a single scrap of information more than that which had already been prepared. Weiss knew the mechanics of closing down the company would be complicated and drawn out, and she didn't have all the answers anyway.
But she was happy with what she had done, relieved that she'd finally addressed the situation, and she gave Amycus a grateful grin as they both walked out and into the adjoining hallway.
"Well, that's over," She said, letting out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding. "Now I just have to handle everything else."
