Leon knew he had screwed up with Chris after Alex had left. He hadn’t been thinking things through when he’d told Chris that someday, Leon would leave him too, and he should have known that the boy would have taken it in the wrong way.
He had, of course, apologized to Chris, and carved out some extra time away from work so that he could spend some quality time with his younger brother. It was only later that he remembered that Anakin had mentioned the Majestic Sand Beast, and knowing that Chris loved animals, weird or normal, he had arranged a surprise for his brother.
Chris didn’t know why had taken him to the old building, or why Leon had walked him up the stairs instead of using the sketchy elevator, and was looking up at his brother, a confused expression on his face, when Leon knocked on Anakin’s door.
Anakin used the Force to open the door from where he was standing- he just had one more anode to weld and then he could step away from his project.
But the moment he was finished he took off his welding gear, put everything down, and came out to greet Leon and Chris.
Majy had already beat Anakin to greeting their guests and was dancing from foot to foot not too far from them, expecting attention in the form of pets and scratches.
“Come in. So, this is Majy,” Anakin gestured to the Sand Beast. “It’s harmless, like a Bernese mountain dog, but with horns.”
Leon hesitated only for a moment when the door swung open, seemingly of it’s own accord. That was hardly the weirdest thing he’d seen here. He still wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about dream creatures just waltzing into to this reality from the dreams. Almost everything living that materialized from the worlds that people dreamed about were dangerous, and, with the exception of maybe Pon-Chan, D’s raccoon, he was pretty sure anything that came through his dreams would be Trouble with a capital T.
But Majy seemed, like Anakin said, to be harmless, and so he only stared at it for a second before helping Chris in. Chris looked up at Leon.
“He wants to know if he can pet it,” Leon said to Anakin, and then frowned at Chris. “No, you definitely can’t hug it. Don’t hug weird animals, Chris.”
Anakin nodded his head enthusiastically. “Go for it. But, you know, it slobbers like a Bernese mountain dog,” he said. “It likes to be scratched behind its ears and the top of its head.”
Anakin had caught the creature using the corners of his walls as scratching posts. Which was why he bought a bunch of back scratchers.
“If you don’t want to get too close yet, you can use one of these,” he picked one up off the chair and held it out to Leon and Chris.
Chris was already walking toward the bantha. “Chris, take a-” Leon started, and then ended the sentence when he realized that Chris definitely wasn’t about to take a chair as he approached the creature. Leon sighed, and ran a hand through his hair. But Chris was already petting it, his fingers getting lost in the animal’s long hair, taking Anakin’s advice and scratching it behind its ears, and it didn’t seem as though it was going to attack him any time soon.
He frowned, and turned to Anakin. “How long exactly have you had that thing?” he asked.
“Majy is built like a stuffed potato sack, nothing is going to hurt them.” A very solid, stuffed potato sack.
“I’ve had it since September, I think. It’s not getting any bigger, which concerns me, but who would I even take it to?”
“Should it be getting bigger?” Leon asked, eyeing the beast warily. To be fair, it wasn’t unmanageably large right now, and seemed pretty passive, but he wondered where Anakin would keep it if it were to get any bigger, and if it would be safe.
“Ya, like the size of a mammoth. In my Dreams these things are huge.”
Leon blanched a little. What was with people and these creatures from their dreams? First the kid with the dinosaur, and Anakin with his space mammoth. He was glad nothing living from his Dreams had come through. The ones in his early dreams, at least, all seemed to have a primary diet that consisted of human flesh. “Maybe you lucked out and got a runt or something. Imagine trying to feed something that big.”
“It’s possible it’s a pygmy version of the animals from my dreams, but,” he shrugged. “I don’t know if that’s a thing in my universe either… It’s also not exactly a thing in our universe,: Anakin mused.
“I’ve tried a few kinds of food with them. I looked up what elephants ate and have been experimenting with that. So far nothing seems to harm it.”
“Well, I guess if you’re gonna be stuck with something from the dreams, it might as well be something that can eat anything,” he said. “If I was you I’d just count my lucky stars that the thing was house-sized.” He frowned, and opened his mouth to ask if it was house trained which would definitely be the more important thing, but before that Chris turned to him, his hands still in the thick shag of the sand beast.
“Don’t suppose you got any toys they can play with, do you?” he asked Anakin instead.
“Do you want to go outside?” Anakin asked. “There’s a park close by. I’ve taught it to fetch.”
Chris looked at Leon, and Leon gave a small nod of permission. Then, with a smile, which came to a relief to Leon who had hardly seen Chris smile at all lately, he nodded at Anakin.
Anakin grabbed Majy’s harness and lead line and a tin of tennis balls. He nodded his head towards the door. “Let’s go.”
