When: Not long after the zombies
Where: A park
Rating/Warning: Low/none
Status: Complete
The first thing that Will had noticed during his run was the creature being walked by a man far in front of him. At first, he assumed that it had to be some kind of massive dog, one of the breeds not normally seen in these parts and hairy enough that it probably would have been happier living somewhere a little colder.
As he got closer, however, he realized that it couldn’t be a dog. Not unless dogs in the Orange County also grew massive horns, which, given the weirdness of this place, he probably shouldn’t have discounted.
He jogged past, his head swivelling, not taking his eyes off the creature and, honestly, kind of wanting a look at its face. That was definitely not a dog, and then his gaze went to man handling it. Will slowed, stopped and then doubled back. “Anakin, hey,” he said, with a bit of a smile. “It’s been a while.”
Anakin stopped to talk with Will. And immediately upon stopping, Majy flopped to the ground, yanking Anakin’s arm, and started rolling, grunting as it did so.
“Hey,” he said. “We survived another hell-pocalypse.”
Majy kept yanking on the lead, almost tangling its legs there for a moment, until Anakin decided to just let the beast free. Using the Force he unclipped the lead and then wound it up neatly.
Majy snorted with contentment.
“How’s your morning?” he asked as if he didn’t have creature from another universe rolling in the dirt at his feet.
Will rose his eyebrows as the leash wound itself up around Anakin’s arm, as if by magic. The creature looked almost familiar somehow, though Will couldn’t quite place his finger on where he’d seen them before. He was fairly sure that it wasn’t anything that actually existed though.
“It’s going alright so far,” he said. “Just about halfway done my morning run. And yours? Just walking your…” he trailed off at this point, hoping that Anakin would fill in the blanks.
“Bantha,” Anakin offered the right word. “I tell everyone else it’s a Burnese pygmy mountain ram. People don’t even know how to question it.”
Majy finally stopped rolling and came to rest with a mighty sigh on their side.
“My morning is great, no zombies.”
Will wasn’t sure if he’d know how to question it either, if Anakin had tried that with him too. He wouldn’t have let it lie, but then, he didn’t exactly know what a ‘Bantha’ was either, so it wasn’t like having a name for it helped much.
He did laugh at Anakin’s comment though. “That is a pretty high bar,” he teased. “But I know what you mean. They didn’t give you too much trouble, did they?”
“Nah,” Anakin shook his head. “Had a laser sword, laser guns. A lot of lasers. And I live in a cement brick, so just hung low until it was over. You?”
“Smart thinking,” Will said, glad to hear that Anakin had mostly stayed out of trouble. He had been a little worried about him. He didn’t have the same connection with Anakin that he had with Kala and Lito; he couldn’t just check in with him or know instinctively that he or any of Will’s other friends had been safe throughout.
“I was out there, trying to stay out of the worst of it and helping people find somewhere safe to go. I take it that means you’ve managed to fix those windows from before?”
“Some of them. The rest are still boarded up. Windows are expensive,” Anakin said. “Maybe my the next zombie invasion I’ll have all the windows fixed. Hopefully I won’t break anything else before then.”
Will snorted. “We can hope,” Will said. “From what I’ve seen, I’d wager a guess that the glass makers are probably the richest people in the county,” he joked. Or at least, partially joked. He’d seen enough broken windows after the invasions that seemed to happen every month to guess that there was some truth in it.
“Hey, a good stock option,” Anakin joked back. “Maybe the only way I can make the million dollars needed to buy a house out here.”
Will had to laugh. “Just so long as I get a kick back for coming up with the idea,” Will teased. He was starting to cool off though, and he knew that he should probably get back to his run while his muscles were still warm. “It was nice running into you and your… bantha. You should give me a call sometime. We’ll go out for drinks or something.”
“Ya,” Anakin said, giving a nod. “Sure.” He didn’t drink but he could order root beer just about everywhere.
And then he was focused on untangling Majy from their lead.
