Who: Will Gorski and Caleb Rivers What: Will catches Caleb doing something suspicious Where: Coffee shop When: Recent! Ratings/warnings: Low/none Status: Complete
It was a quiet day in the Orange County, which Will was grateful for. He hadn’t expected nearly half the weird things that happened that had happened since he’d moved here. But today, today it was just driving patrols, and checking out things that were suspicious. Just regular day in the life of the cop.
His partner was waiting in the cruiser when Will ran into the Starbucks to get their coffee and lunch. He placed his order, and while waiting for it to be prepared, he took a look around the cafe.
Sitting at a table was a young man, long hair under a beanie, working on his computer, and Will made eye contact with him. The tensing of the man’s shoulders was barely perceptible, but Will noticed it, as well as sensed a slight nervousness that suddenly appeared when he noticed Will, in uniform, looking at him.
Will turned back to the bar, and a few moments later, he gathered his things. On his way out, he turned around, made his way to the young man, and asked “What are you working on?”
Caleb was in the process of finding a new hotel to stay at. He knew it was only a matter of time until his current hotel realized he was a fake guest. So hacking into a new one it was. Just as he entered their network a cop walked into Starbucks, fully dressed in his uniform and everything.
Shit.
Caleb quickly exited what he was doing. There was no telling if the cop would know what he was up to or not but Caleb wasn’t about to risk getting caught. Instead he pulled up a word document and started making up a report to type. Good thing he did to because the cop approached and asked what he was working on.
“A report,” Caleb replied. “That against the law?” Okay perhaps she shouldn’t be so antagonistic to a cop, but he couldn’t help himself.
“No, not at all,” Will said, even more sure that he had detected a bit of nervousness from the man now that he’d responded so antagonistically. “I just wanted to make sure that everything was okay over here. You seemed a little nervous when I saw you.”
“Everything’s fine,” Caleb replied still clearly annoyed. “I didn’t know it was a cop’s job to check on people trying to do their work.” He probably shouldn’t be pushing his luck with the cop, but what if he truly had been working on a report the whole time. Why was it a cop’s business?
“It’s not,” Will admitted. “But it is our job to check on people and make sure that’s nothing wrong.” Of course, he had nothing to say that this young man was in, or causing trouble, except for a gut feeling and the belief, pounded into him by the police force, even though he knew that it wasn’t necessarily true in today’s political climate, that people who had nothing to hide generally weren’t antagonistic toward cops. “So, you’re sure that everything’s alright here?”
“Yeah,” Caleb replied taking a sip of his coffee. “All food here,” he dropped the bitterness from his tone hoping the cop would just leave him alone now.
For a moment, Will wondered if he really should drop it. Since his dreams, he felt like his instincts had become a little more honed, though not in any way that he could put his finger on. But even if there was something going on here, and he wasn’t sure that there was, it was definitely nothing he could prove. “Alright,” Will said. “If you’re sure. Just stay out of trouble.”
“Thanks for the tip, sir,” Caleb replied with a small smirk and a bit of gleam in his eye. “I’ll be sure to do just that.”
Will sighed, but there was nothing else he could do. He turned, coffee and lunch in hand, and made his way back to the cruiser.
