It had only been a day of Tyler being locked up in their house and already Klaus was sick of it. Not to mention the fact that Caroline hadn’t left since his sister told her about Tyler. It was bad enough having the hybrid locked up in his house. Now he had to listen to Caroline cry and plead to try and get through to Tyler? It was pathetic. She was pathetic. Klaus wasn’t sure how much more of this he could take.
He spent most of the day at the gallery. It was better than being at his house. However, when he returned home Caroline was still there, begging Tyler to turn his humanity back on. Klaus had enough. He grabbed Caroline and took off at vampire speed to Freya’s room, not even bothering to knock when he entered.
“What you’re doing isn’t working,” he spat at Caroline releasing her from his grasp before turning his attention to Freya. All the did was shoot her a look. A look that said this conversation needed to be private, kept away from Tyler’s prying ears.
The second Freya texted her Caroline rushed over to her place. Yes, she knew it was also Klaus’s place but that didn’t matter. All that mattered was Tyler. She already knew his humanity was off. She had seen it first hand when he showed up at one of her events. But she didn’t know what to do about it or how to help him. Not until Freya told her he was magically bound to a room at her house. Yes, she was still hurt from the way Tyler dumped her, but thanks to Freya she now knew the real reason behind the break up. It didn’t matter though, even if she didn’t know the truth the blonde would do anything to help Tyler.
She hadn’t left Freya and Klaus’s house since Freya had texted her. She was doing everything she could to reason with Tyler, try and get him to turn his humanity back on, but nothing was working. Luckily for her Klaus hadn’t bothered her, in fact he had been gone most of the day. Good. She didn’t want to deal with him. She did feel a bit bad for Freya though. She had a feeling the original hybrid was giving her a hard time about Tyler.
When Klaus returned from work and grabbed her Caroline didn’t even have time to gasp in shock. Before she knew it she was in Freya’s room and Klaus was insulting her. “What the hell?!” Caroline replied not at all scared of him. Just shocked, and pissed.
All things considered, Freya was handling things quite well. After all, it wasn’t as if both her job with the UN and Pimpernel Outreach was suffering ramifications from the state of the government. Not at all. So she clearly had time to babysit a hybrid without his humanity on. Of course. But Klaus was...Klaus and she knew it wasn’t like he was going to fix this on his own. Oh no, as the big sister, it was up to her to fix things - even if her brother didn’t think it needed to be fixed. Or his way of fixing was murder.
So, once she had gotten the truth from him and pushed aside her anger enough so they could get Tyler locked into a room, it was to her books. All she knew was that Klaus was going to need to help fix the mess he created. But she also had known that it was important for Caroline to be involved. No one should have their lives interfered with just because of someone else’s whims.
Even if right now she’d rather be anywhere else. But no. She had brought down some of her books from the attic and was looking over spells when Klaus just barged into her room with Caroline. And while the blonde vampire was shocked and angry, the witch noticed the look and murmured a spell to soundproof her room.
“And do you have any ideas on what will work, then?” Klaus may be giving her a hard time about them bringing Tyler here and then her telling Caroline, leading to the blonde’s current residency there, but Freya wasn’t budging on it. Honestly, Klaus deserved it for his part in all of this.
“Rage,” Klaus replied matter-of-factly. Though he wasn’t too pleased with the way Caroline was speaking to him. This was precisely why he made Tyler break up with her. She was a bad influence.
“And I know the perfect way to do it,” he continued a smirk forming on his face. “I’ll just kill you right in front of him, love.”
If Caroline wasn’t shocked before she certainly was now. “You want to what?!” she demanded. Perhaps she should have been terrified by his words but she wasn’t. She didn’t let Klaus scare her in the dreams and she wasn’t going to let him scare her here.
Disagreeing and trying to live one’s life didn’t make a person a bad influence just because it went against what Klaus wanted. But of course her brother wouldn’t see that. So while he was annoyed at how Caroline was speaking, Freya was more focused on figuring out a way to deal with this.
And she was about to agree with the idea of rage. It was a strong emotion, which gave it a better shot at breaking through. But then she heard the second part of the suggestion and a look was sent to the hybrid.
“No. No one is dying.”
Rubbing her forehead, Freya let out a slow breath.
“We’ll figure out another way to get Tyler angry enough that the anger triggers his humanity.”
Honestly, Klaus had only been half serious with that suggestion. He knew his sister wouldn’t let him kill Caroline. Hell, if she defied him to save her life a few months ago there was no way she would let him out right kill her. Not that he really wanted to anyway. But he had to keep up the front that he didn’t care if she lived or died. He was not the weak hybrid that fell in love with her in the dreams.
“Fine,” Klaus replied to his sister before turning his attention back to Caroline. “I suppose I’ll just have to resort to torturing you.”
Caroline was silent for a moment, considering it. She loved Tyler, more than anything. She would do whatever it took to get his humanity back on as long as it didn’t result in her death. But this was Klaus. Caroline didn’t trust him. “If anyone is going to torture me it’s Freya. And how do you even know that will work? Tyler doesn’t care about me. Not right now.”
“It won’t work if Freya tortures you,” Klaus shot back getting annoyed. “He wouldn’t believe it.”
Klaus and needing to keep his front was exhausting to deal with in this situation. Especially given he seemed blind to the fact the thing he railed against Elijah for with Aurora and how it was the thing that turned him into a monster was essentially the same thing he did to Caroline and the reasons were vastly different.
Of course then the conversation turned to torture and she just looked at the two of them as if they were insane. One, Klaus was right that it would never be believable if she were the one to do the torturing but….
“No one is torturing anyone!” Unless Aurora, Lucien or Tristan showed up and decided to mess with her family. Then she might condone torturing and be part of it. And just to cut it off before it was said, turned to Klaus, “No maiming, either.” Honestly, it was easier to secret women and children away from abusive situations than deal with this.
And to Caroline.
“You know Tyler best. It’s obvious that it has to involve you and Klaus because beneath his humanity being turned off, you two are still going to be those pressure points. So what involving the two of you, that doesn’t involve bodily harm or death, would make Tyler so angry that it would break through?”
Freya had her own thoughts but she wanted to see if the others picked up on them or not.
Caroline was a little relieved when Freya declared no torturing. Though if nothing else worked she might reconsider the idea. But there was a big part of her that didn’t think it would work. Caroline wasn’t sure she could handle the heartbreak if Tyler didn’t care she was being tortured. That would probably be worse than the torture itself.
“I don’t know,” Caroline replied to Freya rubbing her face with her hands. “I don’t know how to reach him.” She looked over at Klaus. “You’re the one that knows how to piss him off.” He had done it more than enough.
Another smirk from Klaus. There was part of him that was enjoying thinking of ways to torture Tyler, emotionally of course. “Don’t be ridiculous, love. You know perfectly well if we kissed he’d be plenty angry.” At least if the dreams were any indication. But he had a feeling Caroline didn’t know about their time in the woods yet.
Well, at least someone was picking up on what she was thinking. Though the fact it was Klaus who picked up on it and not Caroline sort of went against the point. But no matter. It was out there now.
“That would do it.”
Because really, just with the dynamic of Tyler with each of them, humanity on or off, Caroline kissing Klaus would do it.
Now it was Caroline’s turn to look at them both like they were insane. “You want me to what?!” she asked even more shocked than when Klaus had suggested killing her. She looked from him to Freya in disbelief. “I’d rather be tortured,” she added as an afterthought.
“Come on, love.” That smirk was still on Klaus’s face. “For, Tyler. Don’t you want to get your precious boyfriend back?”
The reaction wasn’t entirely unexpected. Actually it made perfect sense given everything that had gone one between the two. But that didn’t mean that the plan was flawed. Well...any plan would have its flaws but that didn’t change the fact that it was the best shot at breaking through a lack of humanity to feel that strong of an emotion.
“Kiss Klaus in front of Tyler.”
Klaus, who really wasn’t helping matters by being, well, himself. Honestly she probably would have a better shot at this if it were just her and Freya because she wouldn’t be so antagonistic and smug about the entire thing. Which was why she mostly just ignored her brother as she looked at Caroline.
“I get it, I do. But beneath the buried emotion, Tyler still loves you. And given everything Klaus has put the two of you through, even with his humanity off, he still attacked a place that would actually upset and anger Klaus. Being tortured? That’s just Klaus being Klaus. But you kissing Klaus? That would break through it.”
“No,” Caroline replied. “I’m not kissing Klaus. There has to be another way. I just need more time.” After all it had only been a day. There has to be some other way to get through to Tyler. That didn’t have anything to do with Klaus. “Please?” She knew it was an inconvenience to have Tyler locked in their home. To have her there all the time trying to reach him. But she just couldn’t kiss Klaus.
“Suit yourself, love,” the smirk was still present on Klaus’s face. He knew Caroline would come around eventually. Without his humanity Tyler would be cruel to her. It was only a matter of time before she couldn’t take it anymore. “But Tyler can’t stay here forever.”
Well, at least Freya had already told Percy and her immediate supervisor at the UN that she’d be working from home already because this was definitely going to be more than a day or two. Yes, she knew that Caroline would be resistant to the idea and at least the idea was there, including the logic behind it that she could mull over once she got through the emotional ‘do not want’ of it all. But Freya could still hope that it would have been a bit easier.
No matter. The important thing was that the idea was there. She just hoped that it wouldn’t take forever for Caroline to come around to the idea.
“If we find one, then great. But fine, some more time.”
They all knew that there wasn’t though. But it would do no good to keep pushing it and arguing points in a circle. That would get them nowhere beyond a headache.
