Klaus returned from Europe a few days after his siblings. He had been back for over a month now and had yet to show any of them what he had acquired once they went home. There were ten new pieces in his gallery from all over Europe. Works from Italy, Greece, France, and Spain. Klaus was quite proud of all he had collected. And now his sister was finally stopping by the gallery to see them.
“Well,” Klaus asked anxiously after only letting Freya take it in for a few minutes. “What do you think?”
If it wasn’t one thing, then it was another. Issues at work because of government shutdowns and lies coming from the administration and the humanitarian crisis (an actual one, not that made up one) at the border had Freya busy. The work at Pimpernel Outreach also was busy as was often the case, the underground system in place to help those with no other option than to disappear, the fact that the federal funding they also relied on was up in the air, thus impacting the programs they ran... Then there had been the undead invading Orange County and Freya getting her magic on. Plus celebrating one year with Evie…. Well, she hadn’t meant for it to be so long before she was able to get to the gallery but such was the nature of her work.
Still, she knew how passionate her brother was about art and he had an amazing eye so it wasn’t even remotely surprising that he’d stayed behind to acquire new pieces. So for now she was taking in the art. Or she would have if Klaus didn’t ask within a few minutes of her being able to take in the pieces.
“I like it.”
And she did. She might not have had much time to truly take it all in, but even just from what she had been able to, she liked it.
Tyler wasn’t sure why he hadn’t turned off his humanity before now, because other than the getting turned to stone thing thing had happened a few days eariler, this was the most fun he’d had in his entire life. No longer was he forced to do what Klaus, or his father, or even Caroline wanted him to do. Now, he could do what he wanted to do.
And right now, all he wanted to do was make Klaus miserable in the same way Klaus had made him miserable. Of course, he couldn’t quite pull off the same level of it. He couldn’t make Klaus do anything. He could, however, ruin Klaus’s precious gallery and it’s reputation.
He hadn’t needed to pay to enter the gallery. All he had had to do was look the man at the front desk in the eye, tell him that he was entering, and then walk past him. Easy as taking candy from a baby. And almost as easy as snapping the neck of the man, around Tyler’s age, who had been looking at a painting, though not nearly as satisfying as sinking his teeth into the pretty neck of the late man’s girlfriend. He had to smile as the blood filled his mouth, and the screams of nearby patrons filled his ears.
Klaus was trying to enjoy some quality time at his gallery with his sister. Yes, he wasn’t being the most patient when it came to hearing her opinion of his new pieces. But still it was a time that shouldn’t have been interrupted.
And yet it was.
Klaus whipped around at the sound of the scream, eyes glowing yellow. Tyler fucking Lockwood. Klaus was well aware of the fact that his sire bond had been broken. Knew the young hybrid’s humanity was off. Klaus hadn’t bothered to seek Tyler out. There was no point now that the man was no longer of use to him. Which also meant there was no reason to keep him alive.
“You’re going to regret that,” Klaus growled lunging at Tyler.
It wasn’t as if Klaus were known for being patient in general. Even so, quality time with her brother would have been lovely though it was clearly not to be. Because of course not. The Dreams had made it rather clear to Freya that there would always be something and the same could be said about Orange County even though that tended to be on a larger scale.
The scream caught her off guard and Freya turned her attention to it when she noticed Tyler. What the actual hell? She had no idea what was going on with all of that, sire bonds being broken (which was a good thing in her opinion given Freya’s feelings on it and compulsion as a general rule) or what was going on with him. She knew his father was dead thanks to the news but it wasn’t like she was close to him.
Quickly she did a barrier spell to ensure that no one got in the middle of this and hurt (or could see honestly since that would be a mess in and of itself to explain).
Tyler noticed the spell before he noticed Klaus, and he smirked a little before dashing out of Klaus’s grasp. He took a moment to look at both of them. “Freya,” he said. “I didn’t know you’d be here.”
He knew from the dreams that taking on Klaus head-on was likely to be a mistake. He didn’t care if he lived or died, but it would be a shame for the fun to end prematurely, even if the barrier spell Freya had thrown up was bound to diminish it considerably. So, instead of going after Klaus, he lunged instead for Freya. Witch or not, she was still just a human, and therefore easier to kill than his former master.
Oh hell no. There was no way this pathetic little hybrid was going to hurt his sister. With a growl Klaus lunged at Tyler again. This time he didn’t miss. He shoved Tyler across the room with the intention of pushing him into the wall however he ended up shoving Tyler into the barrier. Klaus lunged at him again, this time with the intention of ripping out his heart.
There wasn’t all that much time for Freya to react given Klaus then lunged at Tyler. Honestly she could have handled it but no matter. Still, she also knew how Klaus could be and she really was trying to prevent bloodshed from happening. She had no idea just why Tyler was acting like this as she didn’t see the death of his father alone being what would make him switch off his humanity but in that moment, she really didn’t have time to care.
Instead, she just flicked her wrist and snapped Tyler’s neck before Klaus could actually kill him in his second lunge at the other hybrid. Then she turned her attention to her brother.
“Just what the hell is going on?”
Klaus was annoyed when Freya handled Tyler for him. Now that Tyler was no longer sired to him Klaus had no use for him.
“I was handling it,” Klaus shot at his sister before answering her question. “It appears he turned off his humanity. The sire bond was broken along with it.”
He could be annoyed all he wanted, Freya wasn’t about to have Klaus kill someone just because they lunged at her or was of no use. This wasn’t the Dreams and while she had enough issues in them about this sort of thing, this was something else.
“Sure. By planning to kill him and I’d rather not have to explain to Caroline that you killed her boyfriend but could she please still volunteer and help us with events at Pimpernel Outreach.” Honestly her brother could be so pigheaded. “And I can see his humanity is turned off, but I was wondering if you had any idea as to why since I don’t see this being just because his father died.”
Someone had to be the older sister.
“Ex-boyfriend,” Klaus clarified with a smirk. Yes, he was quite proud of the fact that if nothing else he had ruined Tyler’s relationship. Caroline was just distracting Tyler from more important things, like him.
As for why he flipped the switch Klaus just shrugged. The idea that it had anything with what Klaus made Tyler do didn’t even cross his mind. “Grief can be powerful. It’s not like his dad was Mikael.” Because as Klaus had already told Tyler, if Mikael died he would throw a fucking party.
“Now, if you aren’t going to let me kill him…” There was a part of Klaus that was glad Freya had stopped him. Despite the fact that Tyler was no longer of use to him there was still part of Klaus that wanted to keep the hybrid in his life. Other than Rose he was really the closest thing Klaus had to a friend. “What do you suppose we do with him? He is going to wake up eventually.” Neck snapping didn’t last forever.
“Why do you look so smug about them being exes….?” Freya narrowed her eyes at her brother suspiciously. Because while Klaus might not think this had anything to do with what he had made Tyler do while the sire bond was still in place, the witch wasn’t so sure.
“Grief can be powerful, yes, but he still targeted you for a reason.”
Her brother might not want to acknowledge it or even see it, but Freya had needed to save her siblings from the enemies they made in the Dreams and she wasn’t exactly keen on them doing the same here, which she was beginning to think was exactly what had happened here. Because if Tyler didn’t have his humanity or care, why come here at all?
“We find a way to get his humanity back on, even if that means locking him up at our place until we do.”
