Nora came back to the apartment, knowing Ren was very likely to be home. She probably should have sent him a text just to make sure, but there was a part of her that worried if she sent the text, he might not be home. Kinda like that cat that’s both alive and dead at the same time.
Anyway, she came home from the market, carrying only one item in a small bag. She knocked on the door, with a pint of green tea ice cream in one hand and two spoons in the other.
“Ren?” She raised her voice just a little so she could be heard through the wood. “Are you sleeping?”
Ren had woken up earlier in day, feeling refreshed. It hadn’t taken more than a day for his aura to replenish the blood that he’d lost when Tyler had attacked him, and he was now sitting in the living room, cross legged, taking advantage of the empty apartment to meditate.
When he heard Nora call his name, he opened his eyes and turned in the direction of the entrance. “Yeah,” he said. “I’m in the living room.”
Nora came in, thankful that Ren was okay. She should have assumed that he’d be in the shared space--the pair of them only had shared space before they moved in with Jaune and Pyrrha, and old habits die hard. She herself spent most of her time in the living room, and used her bedroom only to sleep and change clothes.
“Hey,” she said, happy to see him looking more like himself. “I got some ice cream. Will you share with me?” She held up the spoons and carton.
Ren patted the floor beside him, indicating for Nora to sit down if she wanted to. “I would like that very much, I think.” He looked at the carton. “Is that matcha?”
“I thought it’d be fun.” Nora wasn’t really big into green tea ice cream. She preferred strawberry or bubblegum, but she knew that Ren liked matcha. After stepping out of her shoes by the door and toeing into her slippers, she headed over to plop down next to Ren. She offered him a spoon and the pint. “I hope it’s a good kind.”
Ren knew that Nora didn’t particularly interested in matcha ice cream, which made him all the more appreciative that she had gone out of her way to pick some up. “It is,” he assured her. He took the proffered spoon and pint, took a spoonful of the ice cream, and lifted it to his mouth.
Nora wasn’t the most interested in matcha ice cream, but it was still ice cream. Sweet, creamy, delicious ice cream. Not her favorite, but Nora would go for it. She held the second spoon like a tiny hammer and gave it a spin. “Are you feeling better? Back to normal?”
Ren nodded. “Back to normal,” he assured her. “Our aura’s really come in handy. I imagine it would have taken a little longer to get back on my feet if it wasn’t for the dreams.”
It probably wasn’t obvious to that many people, but had known Nora for long enough that it was probably obvious to him how worried she’d been about him. She spent a lot of her time with a positive attitude and very little fear, but there were some things in this world that got to her. Things happening to Ren was at the top of that very short list.
“I guess that’s one thing to be thankful for when it comes to the Dreams. That and my hammer.” She gave him a little grin, then reached her spoon over to dig some ice cream out of the carton he was holding.
“There’s a lot to be thankful for when it comes to the dreams,” Ren said, not least of all for bringing Pyrrha and Jaune into their lives. Dreaming of Pyrrha’s death had not been ideal, but if anything it made Ren only more grateful for their, and everyone else’s presence, in his life.
“Thank you for worrying about me,” he added. He knew that Nora had worried over him, and that she was liable to do something reckless if he told her who had attacked him, which is why he kept that information to himself.
Darn him for always being right! Or, at least, most of the time, anyway. He was right about this, too. They certainly did have a lot to be thankful for. Nora nodded, agreeing, with the spoon sticking out of her mouth.
“I'll always worry about you.” It wasn't like she had a choice. “I…” I love you. Nora swallowed. “I can't help it.”
“I know,” Ren said, smiling gently at her. He worried about Nora too, especially when she went running off into these invasions without hardly thinking about it. But he wouldn’t have changed it for anything. He and Nora had always watched out for one another, even when there was no one else who would.
Nora closed her eyes and leaned her head against his shoulder for a moment. She took a few deep breaths, enjoying the closeness, then opened her eyes again, chasing that pint with her spoon. “How’s the ice cream?” It was easier to talk about than her feelings.
Ren leaned his head against hers. “It’s delicious,” he answered.
