Who: Katou and Gwen
What: Gwen finds herself a new roommate
When: Recently
Where: Chateau Katou
Warning/Rating: Low/none
Status: Complete
Katou had been hesitant to accept another roommate any time soon. As far as he was concerned, there wasn’t much shittier than living with someone, caring about them, and having them take off and leave him. It had happened too much, with Jack and Wendy, and with Kanan.
But, even though Wendy kept the rent on the house low enough, and The Agency paid him well enough to easily be able to make rent payments, it would still help out if he could pass half of it off to someone else. He didn’t know this Gwen woman from a hole in the wall. It wasn’t like if she up and left he’d be too bothered. And besides, she played some decent music.
When one walked through the front door, the living room spread out to the right, a TV and stereo system in front of the large picture window (which had been broken enough that Katou had finally gotten fed up and replaced the glass with something a little more bullet proof). His left-handed guitar stood in its guitar stand in front of the reading nook that had once been his bedroom, with his right-handed, though bullet-holey guitar stood just next to it. On the wall closest to the kitchen was a built-in, working fireplace which really only got any use in December.
To the left, was the kitchen, cozy and quaint, with an island in the middle of it that held the oven, and where Katou usually sat at bar stools to eat his meals.
A hallway extended from the living room, ending in a linen closet. To the right was the master bedroom - his bedroom, with the door closed - and further past that was the back door which lead to the spacious backyard, and the smoking area since Wendy had made it very clear Katou wasn’t to smoke inside.
If one followed the hallway to the left, they’d find the second, empty bedroom, and further past that, the bathroom.
“Well, that’s the tour,” he said, making his way back to the living room. “What’d’;ya think?”
It was a nice place, reminding her of the one she'd shared with Em Jay before she moved, even down to the guitar. Just bigger. Though the view was better and the window bigger, even if... oddly... reinforced.
And why were there bullet holes in the guitar?
"I like the kitchen. And it's pretty roomy," Gwen said, giving him a grin. "No wonder you need a roommate. A place like this in New York would cost four thousand a month, easy."
“Oh yeah, the kitchen’s real nice. You cook much?” Katou had done most of the cooking when he’d lived with Kanan, and it was one of the few housework jobs that he genuinely enjoyed.
“And you’re in luck on that front. This house belongs to a friend of mine who moved away a few years back, and she gives me one helluva deal. Between the two of us, it’ll only be five-hundred, plus utilities and shit.”
“I’m really good at noodles. Ramen, spaghetti, if I can boil it I can do it,” Gwen said, which really didn’t answer the question. Mostly, she could survive. She came to a stop and stared at him. “Five hundred each or five hundred total??”
It answered the question enough for Katou, and he snorted. “Well, good enough, I guess. If I’m feeling generous sometime, maybe I’ll cook you something a little less stringy.”
He couldn’t help but laugh. “Five hundred each. Wendy’s good and all, but she ain’t that good.”
Okay, that was a lot more realistic, and still well below what Gwen was paying right now for her shit-partment. “Okay. I think I’m interested. In this big house, with good acoustics, and cheaper rent then I’m paying now.”
“Oh yeah, the acoustics are fantastic,” Katou said, a little more excitement creeping into his voice. “You said you play the drums, right? I think you can set ‘em up over by the guitars there if you want. It’s a pretty nice place to just jam.”
“Yep.” She tucked some hair behind her ear, glancing over at the guitars, a thoughtful look on her face. Being able to practice or just jam was important and a deal breaker with any room mates. This was a good sign.
“At least I wouldn’t have to worry about being too loud.”
“Oh yeah, the neighbours stopped pounding on the door months ago,” Katou said, only half joking. It had taken him a while to figure out what an acceptable level of noise was that didn’t involve the neighbours calling the police, but he thought he had managed to figure it out by now. “If you smoke, you can do it in the back. No drugs in the house.” He paused. “I mean, sometimes I’ll sneak a joint or two,” the smell vanished quickly enough that he didn’t think it would be a problem, “but other than that.”
“I doubt anyone could have been as loud as two of my former bandmates together,” Gwen decided, trying to ignore the ache in her chest. “Don’t smoke. Not cigarettes anyway.” She shrugged her shoulder. “I’ll keep anything outside.”
“Cool,” Katou said, fiddled with the watch on his left arm, and extended the now robotic arm toward Gwen for a handshake. “Sounds like I got myself a roommate.”
Grinning, Gwen took his hand and shook it. “Sounds like you do!”
