It had been a while since Leon had last felt, well, happy. It seemed lately all he had felt was defeated, frustrated, and guilty. But today, for once, he was feeling pretty good. And how could he not? Liv was finally on a brain that didn’t make him want to strangle her, and just in time for Superbowl season.
The Big Game itself was still a few weeks away, but that didn’t mean that he and Liv couldn’t get ready for it. Leon sat on the couch, beer in hand, and called over his shoulder “Hey Liv, hurry your ass up. The game’s about to start!”
Liv was beyond stoked. It was football Sunday! She was ready to kick back, have some drinks, eat some pizza, some spicy wings, and watch the game. Leon had already arrived and made himself at home. Liv was just putting the finishing touches on her face paint (each side of her face painted her team’s colors of course) when Leon called out.
“Coming!” Liv replied making her way to the kitchen to grab a spicy beer out of the fridge before making her way over to the couch. She plopped down next to Leon. “I’m thinking wings and pizza first. Then maybe some nachos.”
“I was thinking the very…” Leon started, and then trailed off when he actually glanced over at Liv. He hadn’t been sure what Liv had been doing tucked away in her room, but he definitely hadn’t expected that. His grin widened. “You’re really getting into this, aren’t you?”
“Hell yeah!” Liv replied enthusiastically. “Gotta show my support for my team.” It didn’t really matter that they couldn’t exactly see her. It was the principal of the matter. “Want me to do yours too?”
Leon couldn’t help but laugh. “No, I’m good,” he said, and took a swig from his beer. “The last time I painted my face for a team, my face was stained blue for a week.” It had been an embarrassing week, to say the least. “Besides, I don’t see the point of doing it in your own home. It’s not like anyone’s gonna see you.” Still, Liv’s brains were going to do what Liv’s brains were going to do. Sometimes it was better to not question it.
“You probably got the wrong type of paint,” Liv commented eyes glued to the screen. “What do you call me?” she teased. “No one?” Because she was certainly seeing Leon. “Besides showing pride for your team is half the fun!”
Leon gave an annoyed sigh, as if Liv had been badgering him for ages about the face paint. He took a gulp of his beer. “Fine,” he said, gruffly. “If you’re going to be that annoying about it, you can do it up. Just a little though.”
“That’s the spirit!. You order the pizza. I’ll get the paint.” It took her less than a minute to retrieve them from her room. She waited for Leon to finish ordering their food before getting started. “Okay no close your eyes,” she instructed as she dipped the brush in the paint.
Eating pizza with Liv was always a kind of different experience. His go-to pizza had always been all-meat, but with Liv, he made sure to order a lot of extra jalapenos, peppers, and anything else that could make it hotter, plus a side of hot sauce. The hot sauce, at least, was just for Liv. Leon liked spicy things fine, but he was not a huge fan of dipping his pizza, already perfect, into anything else.
He listened to Liv’s instructions, closing his eyes, and, as the wet paint was brushed on his face, he wondered if he was making some kind of mistake. For all he knew, Liv was painting roses and bunnies on his face. Maybe not with this brain though. He didn’t say anything though, just frowned to himself as she painted his face, and he was relieved when she was finally done.
Liv smiled the whole time she painted Leon’s face. “Okay,” Liv said once she was done. “You can open your eyes.” Once he did Liv smiled even more triumphantly. “Go look!” she said proudly just as they were singing the national anthem on TV. “And hurry! The game is about to start.”
Leon got up from the couch and made his way to Liv’s bathroom to get a look at himself in the mirror. He was a little surprised at what he saw. Liv had done a surprisingly good job, managing to even fit the team logo on one cheek and the team mascot on the other, as if she’d painted this exact same thing on people’s faces a hundred times.
And stranger still, just looking at himself made him more excited for the game, which was extra stupid since there was no one else who was going to see them (much to Leon’s relief). “Looks stupid, Liv,” Leon said, his voice carrying a hint of a smile despite his best efforts.
“Oh shut up!” Liv replied. Even though Leon was complaining about it she could tell he actually liked it. Even if she couldn’t see the smile, she still heard it in his tone. “And get your ass back in here. You’re going to miss the kick off!”
Leon did smile at that, and went to join Liv on the couch. “Gotta say, this might be my favourite brain so far,” he said, looking at the television.
Just as both teams were taking to their sides of the field, Dan arrived home. He’d spend the morning at his bar getting it ready to open that afternoon. That was the drawback to owning your own business, often times you had to work on Sundays whether you wanted to or not. Fortunately, though, the Double Tap wasn’t a sports bar. No TV’s showing the game so the afternoon would probably be relatively low key and quiet enough that Dan didn’t feel poorly about leaving his part-time employee to hold down the fort while he went home for a few hours.
He gave Liv a smile as he closed the door behind him. “You look like yer havin’ fun, Darlin’,” he said. As far as brains went Football Brain had quickly become one of Dan’s favorites. He wasn’t a huge sports nut, but he enjoyed watching when he had the chance. It was easy to get excited about the games with Liv on the couch next to him playing armchair quarterback. Watching the Super Bowl this year was going to be extra fun!
Dan hadn’t yet let Liv paint his face yet, so it was extra hilarious to see that Leon of all people had actually allowed Liv anywhere near him with it. Dan nodded a greeting to the detective. “Leon,” he said then pointed to his cheek with a teasing smirk. “Ye got a little somethin’ right there, mate.”
“Leon’s having fun too,” Liv replied matter-of-factly eyes glued to the television. “You could learn a thing or two from him.” Considering Dan had yet to let her paint his face. And okay maybe she was still a little bitter about him leaving town for ‘one more job.’ But mostly it was the face painting thing.
“Shaddup,” Leon grumbled to Dan, and then repeated the phrase to Liv. “She made me do it,” he added as an addendum, as if it had taken more than Liv just asking once or twice to do it. He grabbed his beer, and then turned in his seat to look at Dan. “You gonna watch the game with us?” he asked.
“Aye, looks like he is.” Dan said with a nod. Dan knew Liv wasn’t thrilled about him going to Aspen for what he’d sworn was his last job. But he really hadn’t a choice, given the circumstances. Perhaps one day once things settled, he’d be able to actually tell her about it. Maybe he should let her paint his face. Though another glance at Leon and Dan couldn’t help smirking a little more.
“That was the idea,” Dan told Leon as he shrugged off his coat and put it away. “Bars gonna be fairly deserted on a Sunday afternoon. Nothin’ Phil can’t handle fer a few hours. Besides, watchin’ Liv play armchair quarterback is a must see. Yer in for a treat.”
“Are you guys gonna chit chat the whole time?” Liv questioned her boyfriend and best friend. “Or are you gonna shut up and watch the game?”
Leon couldn’t help but laugh at Liv’s comment, shooting an amused look at Dan. “Yeah, yeah, we’ll shut our pie holes,” he said, grinning, moving over on the couch to give Dan some room to sit between him and Liv.
