Jessica wasn’t sure what was worse; the dreams that she’d been getting, or the fact that she’d woken up from them not only buried under the dresses that Kilgrave had forced her to wear, but also with the undead once again wandering the streets of the Orange County.
No, that was a lie. It was definitely the dreams. Her dreams had never been a walk in the park, but at least, other than the super strength, they were nothing she wasn’t familiar with. Her whole family dying in a car crash, waking up in the hospital having been adopted by an abusive witch of a woman and her tv star daughter. But meeting Kilgrave, dreaming of being under his thrall… She’d thrown up when she had first woken up. And, despite knowing that it was idiotic, jumping into a swarm of the undead had seemed like a good idea, at least as far as getting Kilgrave off her mind.
It had gone well at first. Jessica had been able to knock them around like dolls, thanks to the strength she’d gotten from the dreams. But the more she tossed, the more that came, bigger and meaner than the ones before. She strained under the weight of a patchwork giant, and, with a grunt, tossed it into a nearby truck. Things were starting to get a little too messy, and even through everything she was feeling she could tell that. It was time to get out of there.
She jumped, intending to leap away from the melee, but one of the creatures had wrapped it’s undead fingers around her ankle just when she was almost free, and slammed her into the ground.
Colleen was…. Well, she didn’t know. The dreams were both obnoxious and odd. The whole being poisoned thing had sucked. Then she had dreamt about Danny finding out the truth about the Hand and she wanted to shake both him (because it was true that he was so black and white in his mentality that he couldn’t see that maybe, just maybe, there was nuance and different factions) but she also wanted to shake herself because she knew the signs of a cult. She knew she was being lied to.
It was annoying.
Then there were the PIs sent by Scientology to make her life hell and while she had her normal students, potential new students were still sometimes scared away and that was...well, it was bullshit but there wasn’t much she could do on that.
Not that she really had time to think about that right now. No. Because there were undead things roaming the streets and that meant that Colleen found herself fighting. It wasn’t completely shocking. She’d been trained in martial arts here and then add in her training from the Dreams and her natural inclination to help people (despite how abrasive she could sometimes come off as) and she was out in the streets, katana in hand.
Which was how she came across Jessica. Well honestly it was just someone in need of help at the moment, her mind mostly focused on fighting and protecting and less on if she knew a person or not and so she rushed in and cut off the arm of the thing that was trying to drag Jessica. That was one way to get someone free after all, her stance clear that she was prepared to keep fighting.
Jessica pulled her foot toward her to break the creatures hold, and was more than a little surprised at how little resistance there was to her pull. She glanced down to see the severed arm still holding fast to her ankle, and, nearly panicked, she wrenched it off of her and threw it as far as she could.
Only then did she notice the other woman, the one with the sword. So, it probably wasn’t Jessica’s strength that had dismembered the undead, which was a relief. The woman looked familiar, somehow, though Jessica couldn’t quite place where she knew her from. She scrambled to her feet. “Thanks,” she said, grunted a little as another one of the creatures racked it’s claws down her arm. She grabbed it by the wrists, and heaved it down the street. “Enjoying the weather?” she asked the woman dryly.
Some people ran from the fire, others ran towards it. And apparently even with her issues, Colleen was the type to run towards the fire. Still, someone needed to be. Though Jessica wanting to throw the arm off made sense even without Colleen realizing that she seemed worried about super strength or anything like that. While Colleen was mostly familiar with the fact abilities could cross over thanks to conversation with Blake… well, it wasn’t the type of thing that often came to mind.
“Yeah, of course.”
And then she saw the strength in action and quirked a brow. Impressive.
“Oh, it’s lovely.”
She could reply in respond. And without seeming to notice anything, turned and quickly slashed one of the zombies that had been trying to come up behind her. One had to always be aware of their surroundings even without it being obvious to those around you. It could mean life or death. And that was clearly the case here as well.
Jessica wasn’t entirely sure how she felt about a woman walking around the streets of California, sword in hand, especially when the woman seemed to know what she was doing with it. But really, that was the least strange thing that had happened all day.
She wondered whether or not the woman was a dreamer too - probably, given the fact that she didn’t seem to bat an eye at Jessica’s strength or the undead - and then suddenly, it hit Jessica where she knew her from.
“You’re-” she started, though she was cut off when one of the creatures grabbed her from behind. Jessica grabbed it’s arm, and threw it over her shoulder. It landed on the ground at her feet, and she stomped on it’s chest until it stopped moving. “You’re from the Network, aren’t you?” she asked.
There was one rule Colleen always adhered to - don’t bring a weapon (her katana) with you unless you are prepared to use it - and it was especially true now. While she had her martial arts skills as well, situations like this? Well, the katana was necessary in her opinion.
As Jessica started to speak, Colleen quirked a brow but was then distracted as there were zombie things to fight, which she delivered a well place kick to the solar plexus of one of them and knocking it away as the other woman finished her question. And...that summed it up why she seemed familiar. Because really. There were only so many ‘networks’ that would make sense in a situation like this.
“Yeah, I am.” No need to say ‘you too?’ as it was obvious Jessica would be on the network based on her strength and the mentioning of it.
Jessica moved a little closer to Colleen so they could better protect one another. It wasn’t that Jessica needed, or particularly wanted, saving or help or anything else. But even she could admit that she might have gone in over her head when she’d thrown herself in the midst of too many of these creatures. “Jessica,” she said, by way of introduction, and then said “These aren’t yours are they?”
While Colleen was more than used to fighting on her own, she also knew how to read the odds. And the number of...whatever these things were? It was definitely better to have back up. Again, a time where Danny and his glowing fist might actually be useful but no matter.
“Colleen.”
She did shoot a look at Jessica for her question, but then shrugged. Because that also meant it clearly wasn’t from Jessica’s dreams.
“No, thankfully not. Ninja cults would be more like it and vague incidents that happen in New York.”
And as another one lunged forward, Colleen put her katana to use as she had been doing.
“Ninja cults. Of course,” Jessica commented dryly, tossing another one of the undead as far away from her as she could. Part of her wished she had some kind of weapon to make this easier, but she was just as likely to cut herself on a katana as she was the undead that were shuffling around her.
“I think I’m going to take off,” she said after a moment, her breath coming a little shorter than it normally would. This was exhausting. “Are you going to stay here?”
Only in Orange County? That certainly seemed to be a theme she was picking up on. And yet it was still better than Scientology - at least now that she was out and could see it for what it had truly been and not what she’d grown up believing it to be. Even with the uncomfortable parallels between Dreams and reality.
It really was exhausting and Colleen couldn’t blame Jessica for wanting to take off. Besides, it seemed that there was a lull in the invasion so it was a good time to leave. Even if there would be other places undoubtedly like this one.
“Probably not. I’ll either get back to the Dojo or caught up in another fight. Either way, it seems our work here at least is done.”
“Yeah, and I need a drink.” Or twenty. Enough to get back her strength so she could continue trying to avoid any thoughts of Kilgrave by putting these things in their own grave. “Maybe I’ll see you around, Colleen.”
