Cisco was confused, his life was changing so fast. He was handling things between the hospital and the Agency well enough, but add in potential for shiny new super powers and it all became overwhelming. He decided he needed a change in venu, so he left the hospital and came straight over to check out the lab at the Agency. Jemma had said they would have shared labs, which at least he was used to be he had no idea who his lab partner was -and just maybe he ought to change that.
He planted himself down in that shared unoccupied lab and began searching through IKEA and other stores. Maybe how awkward he felt in that lab was because he didn’t have his own space yet, no real desk to call his own.
Everyone needed a space. He also hoped while he was browsing, his new lab partner might make an appearance. He was casual in dress, but he always was. Cisco wasn’t comfortable being formal. It wasn’t who he was. He wore a pair of dark wash jeans and a black shirt with a galaxy map and red pin on it where Earth was.
---
Ruby did seem to spend a lot of time at the Agency. Well, she did work there full time and she knew that there was someone who came in and out because of two jobs but so far, their paths hadn’t crossed. Or maybe he hadn’t started yet? She just knew Jemma had mentioned it to her so that the twenty year old didn’t freak out if someone was suddenly there. Which….okay could go either way depending on what was going on.
Having been elsewhere when Cisco showed up, the silver eyed engineer had her headphones on, and like Cisco was dressed casually, black jeans, combat boots, and a black and red stripped top. She had a color scheme, okay? And really at least she hadn’t decided to wear her cloak that day. Well, she had but it was hanging up as it had warmed up by that time.
So at first Ruby didn’t notice Cisco when she walked in. Then she did and she stopped and pulled her headphones down.
“Hi!” Socially awkward, not the best at making connections but she could at least be friendly.
---
Cisco was a little startled by the excitement, but nonetheless he grinned a bit as he pushed away from the computer. “Hey there.” He responded easily enough, giving her a once over and a friendly sort of wave. “Are you Ruby?” He figured he was the part timer, might as well attempt first connections.
“I’m Cisco.” He stood to offer a hand to shake if she did that kind of thing. She had an interesting look, her eyes caught his attention. He’d never seen anyone with silver ones before. “You’re the weapons expert right?”
---
Ruby could be over-excited at times, and just tended to be fairly friendly. Which sometimes could be seen as forced and trying too hard but she meant well. Besides, she and Cisco were going to be working together and she really would prefer if the dynamic wasn’t like her supposed nemesis from university who couldn’t stand being behind her in grades. But Cisco seemed nice so she wasn’t too worried about that.
“Yep! Nice to meet you!”
Pulling her headphones the rest of the way off so they were around her neck, Ruby nodded some at the question.
“Kinda? I mean. Overall mechanical engineering so not just weapons. But I’m pretty good with weapons as well!”
Understatement, but Ruby had a tendency of selling herself short. Besides, the weapons knowledge came more from the Dreams and then looking into things here. But the mechanical engineering aspect? That had been her entire life more or less.
---
No, Cisco wasn’t looking for a work nemesis. He was looking for a partner of sorts, but he was quite a bit more low key-though he appreciated the enthusiasm. It made him smile. She seemed like a nice girl.
“Do you like coffee?” He asked, motioning toward a few various things he’d picked up for a little in office coffee bar if she was interested. She was free to help herself, Cisco lived off coffee, but he couldn’t stand it black. It was gross. How people drank it that way he’d never know.
“Cool, I’ve got some knowledge in the area but mine is more geared toward biomedicall and network security.” He offered with a shrug as he wandered toward their little coffee station. He’d even donated a new coffee machine, a decent medium end one that would at least serve the purpose of fresh coffee or tea if one wanted- but Cisco didn’t know anything about tea.
---
A lot of the enthusiasm could probably be chalked up to nerves as Ruby tended to mellow out some once she got comfortable around someone but seeing at how said rambling and upbeat answers weren’t getting her odd looks, was a good thing. Less concern really.
“I usually drink tea or hot chocolate. But sometimes I have coffee.” Like when she was needing to study and not die. Then again, Weiss said her coffee tastes were atrocious given how much sugar and milk she’d put in it to avoid the bitterness. No matter.
“Cool! I like how many different focuses there are because then you can find the one that fits you best and do that and not try to fit yourself into what someone thinks is engineering or the like.”
---
“I don’t know much about tea but I picked up a couple herbals. I didn’t know what you’d like...there’s variety.” He tried to be a thoughtful person anyway. “Help yourself whenever you want.” Cisco mixed together a coffee of his own while they chatted. Coffee, tea, it all did the same thing-it was a good social construct he could lean on if he didn’t know what to do with his hands. When meeting new people, nerves were definitely a thing.
“When people tell me they don’t like science I’m pretty sure it’s because they haven’t been introduced to the right kind for them. There are so many fields it’s kind of amazing really. I like to dabble in astronomy too for fun sometimes. Even that’s a science of sorts.” He offered as he sat back down nearby. “And more recently Quantum mechanics.” He glanced up over at her “What kind of things are you working on around here? Is this your full time job?” Trying to make conversation, he stuck a cinnamon stick into his coffee and swirled it around a bit.
--
“I’m fine for now, thanks though!” At the moment Ruby was fine, but it was nice to know that there would be the choice of tea or hot chocolate later on if she wanted it. Well not hot chocolate right now since that wasn’t on the list of things Cisco had mentioned, but later on. Especially as it got colder in the area.
Besides, there were more interesting things to talk about. Like science.
“Right?? I mean, sure some of it might seem daunting at first, but there’s always something and you’re always able to learn new things and see how different things fit or interact which is really super exciting.”
Fastest way to getting Ruby’s trust and the like? Get her talking about science and her love of it.
“That sounds really cool, though. I should look more into them.” She had just been busy lately. As for what she was working on? “Um, this and that. Nothing specific right now for the area so I’m working on a project I put together for graduation for a water filtration system that would help in deserts in developing countries.”
It was one of the things she liked about this place and Jemma. When there wasn’t a pressing emergency where she needed to suddenly come up with weapons or something else depending, she could work on the ideas she had swimming in her head.
“Yep! Full time. When there are Orange County things going on, I sometimes get recruited into doing fighting instead of building things but it really depends on the situation.”
Yes. Fighting. The tiny 20 year old who looked like she wouldn’t hurt a fly was also one of the people who got sent in to fight.
---
Nope, he hadn’t thought of hot chocolate, but he really ought to have. Hot chocolate was amazing, but it wasn’t a thing he thought about when collecting hot drinks for some reason. “Exactly, I don’t know about you but I’ve -never- been bored with science. I read articles sometimes, people come up with some seriously fascinating theories.” He got excited about science, sue him.
“Ah, I won’t be here full time. Mostly almost full time on weekends though, I have a second job.” And currently he still liked his second job, enough not to leave it. “Fighting, you? But you’re so little.” He couldn’t help that comment, but it wasn’t meant meanly it was out of concern. “I’m not..much of a fighter I’ll admit. Behind a monitor is more of my thing.” He grinned sheepishly for emphasis. “I’m pretty good at being the eyes and ears though….in fact I was thinking of doing a few upgrades in here. Computer wise.”
---
Hot chocolate was weird like that. It seemed more like a holiday drink or for special occasions and not something like tea or coffee which were stables in any office environment.
“Nope, I’ve never been bored by science either!” Even when it sometimes confused her dad or sister, but they had always encouraged her all the same and then her uncle who had built things with her while Taiyang and Yang would practice their MMA.
“That’s cool, though! I mean it sounds super busy but if you’re okay with that and all I mean.” Some people could handle that. And given Ruby’s perchance to get caught up in projects, it wasn’t like she could really speak on the matter even if it ended up in different settings. The comment on being little was met with a shrug.
“I guess, but that’s never stopped me.” And because it was a perfect reason to do so, pull Crescent Rose from where it was clipped on her belt in resting mode and released it to show it in scythe mode as well. “It’s also a sniper rifle!” Then there were the silver eyes which she didn’t quite understand yet and hadn’t used since the previous year when Grimm invaded. “But there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s good to know where your strengths are! Though you might want to talk to Kitty about any upgrades. That’s more her department than down here.”
---
“Then I think we’ll get along just fine.” Cisco grinned as he leaned back against the small surface that held all the coffee supplies. After a moment or two he removed the cinnamon stick-it was only for adding flavor, not for saturating and he gave it a test sip. Not bad for workplace coffee, so much better than the hospital grade variant he usually got. He had no control over what that was about. It was all provided for them and they weren’t really supposed to be adding or removing. It just existed.
“It’s busy, but I like busy. Too much downtime and I get anxious.” He admitted with a shrug. Assuming both places didn’t end up exploding with dramatics at the same time, he could probably still continue to be part time at each.
He gave a small smile at her comment and nodded. “If that’s what you like to do, then it shouldn’t. I just hope you don’t get yourself too hurt out there. I work at a hospital, but I’m not a doctor.” He could do the basic stuff, but nothing more complicated. If she got too hurt, he wouldn’t be able to perform a surgery or anything. When she pulled out that small item, he raised an eyebrow as it snapped into a scythe looking thing. “...Cooool, can I see?” How did it fit into that rose? “Yeah, Kitty’s my next stop actually. We’ve been working on a few things already.”
---
Ruby felt herself relax slightly as Cisco said he figured they’d get along just fine. Which was weird since she hadn’t even realized that she’d been tense in the first place, though it was more just the tension she had whenever meeting new people and being worried about how things would end up playing out. So she smiled and nodded. “I think we will as well!”
And that was a relief. Because sharing a lab with someone you didn’t get along with? That could get awkward and fast. Especially in a place like this where tensions could run high because of Dreams and whatever was happening in the county at any given point in time.
“I get that. I’m always tinkering on something it seems.” Yang made comments on how she’d lose her head if it weren’t screwed on because she would get caught up in her tinkering on things. And even if she was better about these things now that she had branched out and had friends, she still got caught up in the building and tinkering.
“I do. I mean, I can help defend people so of course I want to. It’s why I build things, to help people. This is just another way of helping people that I can do.” A smaller, more honest sou, able to spark hope and breathe fire into the wearyl. “But I should be okay. I have aura, which helps negate physical damage to a point.” It certainly helped matters. As for Cisco wanting to see Crescent Rose...well, at least he was asking unlike Katou which had nearly led to a panic attack as he just played around with the sniper-rifle-scythe as she’d been doing repairs.
“Sure.” And so while she had some reservations that was just more her own anxiety because Crescent Rose was part of her in a way, an extension of her, she handed the weapon over and nodded at the comment about going to see Kitty next, “Cool!”
---
He gave her a warm smile and nodded, science friends were great. If they had that as a cominality Cisco wouldn’t see a single problem with this new friendship. Anyone was better than Hartley. He could do without a ridiculous work rival. Adult relationships were great, thanks. She seemed stable and nice.
“It’s just better if I’m busy, and so far I haven’t been overwhelmed since the one time it landed me in the hospital. So I think I’m handling it okay. No more hospital visits since then. I’ve learnt to make a few adjustments.” He had to with his schedule or go insane. He’d learned, ending up in hospital was the opposite of fun for stress and sickness.
“I understand that, if I had the power to I’d probably be right out there beside you. If you are able to help someone, you should.” He said with a smile as he reached out for it. He wasn’t about to grab her weapon, it looked small and thus probably personal. “I’ve designed a few things that are compact like this for a friend who’s basically a superhero but I’ve never seen one quite like this.” He was careful with it, until he got it to open and then he jumped and laughed. “Oooh snap, that’s awesome!” He gave it a twirl but it didn’t look very graceful on his end at all “Does it have a name?” Something that awesome ought to have a cool name as far as he was concerned!

Adult friendships were somewhat new to Ruby. Then again until she had shown up on the network and met the others, friendships in general weren’t something she had really done as she’d always been quite content to just stick to her family and building even as she could get along with people. But actual friendships were nice.
“That’s the important thing, not working yourself to the hospital.” She was definitely not a fan of hospitals, thank you very much. And while she often would push through things when she was upset about something and try to focus on anything else, she at least knew (mostly) to take time for herself and relax. So as long as Cisco could balance his schedule and not end up in the hospital, then it was good.
“Yep. In the Dreams I want to be like the heroes from fairy tales, to fight to make things better. That never changed between the two.” It wasn’t about the accolaids or anything like that. It was just the right thing to do. Things had gotten a lot more complicated, the fight more dire with more players, but the desire to help and make the world better for everyone? To give people a chance? That was a core part of who Ruby was.
She did giggle some as he jumped back. She was used to the size differences depending on if it was in travel mode, rifle mode, or scythe mode, but she could see how it would be shocking to someone just seeing it.
“Thanks! I designed her and made her myself! Well. In the Dreams.” She tried to keep from referring to Crescent Rose as she because people thought she was strange for it, but she forgot herself because she couldn’t help but like showing her off. “Yep! Crescent Rose!”
---
“Fully agreed, one trip was more than enough. The food was terrible and the service was lousy. I can’t recommend it..” He grinned, teasing obviously. They wouldn’t allow outside food at his-so he’d been stuck eating whatever they fed him. Standard cafeteria, flavorless meals. Which were probably good for his stomach, but his taste buds disagreed. He was less focused though now that he had that Crescent Rose in his hands, his mind was wandering and the gears were ticking away. How could he replicate that technology? Could it be?
“Well, if you ever need another one of these I think I can replicate it. Assuming you don’t already know how anyway. That’s kind of my dream self’s job. I have to say I enjoy it just as much in reality. The idea of making stuff like this..Though I haven’t had a chance to make anything weapon-y yet-this might be a hell of a lot of fun.” It’d gone into Scythe mode by pure luck, Cisco didn’t know how it worked but he was quickly learning just by touching it. He managed to make it change modes a couple times.
“She? Is it just a weapon or is there more?” Was there something he couldn’t tell by handling it? He looked it over, trying to see if he could find anything that made it an entity but to him it just looked like a weapon. He handed it back a moment later. “I’m not even going to suggest a name change, because that one’s pretty cool actually. Good choice.” He was half tempted to hug her, he wasn’t the only one who named their tech. This was going so well, he couldn’t help but smile. “Think you can show me how?” He wasn’t adverse to learning, in fact it sounded like a fun night to him.
---
“Yeah, it is recommended to keep hospital trips to the minimum.” Because really, Ruby was pretty sure all hospitals were going to be like that. They were when she both visited and had to be there herself. Neither of which were experiences she wanted to repeat.
While Ruby doubted she would need a replication of Crescent Rose (each weapon in her Dreams were unique to the user after all), she did nod. Because she had a feeling that even if it wasn’t Crescent Rose, there would undoubtedly be need for similar weapons given the nature of Orange County and the random invasions.
“It’s definitely fun because you can be super creative.” As for if Crescent Rose were more than a weapon? Ruby flushed and scratched the back of her head, “No...just a weapon.”
Okay foot in mouth syndrome remained. Oh well.
“Sure! As in how to use Crescent Rose or…” Because there were a number of things he could be asking for a demonstration about and Ruby just wanted to be certain.
---
“They probably keep it that way to keep us out actually “ Cisco grinned as he twirled the weapon in hand for a second time, before awkwardly dropping it when his fingers got all twisted. “Shit, my bad.” He bent down to pick it, or her up before handing the Crescent Rose back to her, he was not the most coordinated with weapons at all. Maybe she ought to take it back now before he did something ridiculous like take out the window not far from them.
“Yeah. I’ve built a couple of things, the cold and hot guns in storage are mine. Admittedly the second time around under pressure wasn’t the most fun, but the creative challenge was still interesting.” While they were his first Dream Gifts so he hadn’t been all that receptive to them, they did have style. There was no doubting that. “Oh, you called it she. I mean who am I to judge?” He gave a cool smile, Cisco was open to all kinds of possibilities Hell his first week in he got taken to see dinosaurs.
“How to make one, I’ve not made something this versatile before. Most of mine have only had one function. Two tops.” Science was about sharing, so maybe she’d be open to it.
---
“That wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.” And it really wouldn’t. It seemed like something a hospital would do. Maybe? Who knew. Besides there were other things to focus on. Despite its appearances, it wasn’t as if Crescent Rose was light so it wasn’t too shocking that Cisco eventually would drop it. So she was more than happy to take Crescent Rose back and make sure nothing was knocked out of place. But given what it needed to do, it was tougher than it looked as well.
Had Ruby seen the post about the Cold Gun? She couldn’t recall although she knew that it was in the vault and something that Jemma had wanted her to take a look at. “Creative challenges are always cool, even if the situation isn’t.”
Or that was just Ruby and her tendency to always find some sort of silver lining. But at least he wasn’t going to tease her for slipping and saying ‘she’ when talking about Crescent Rose.
“Sure! I can do that! I actually have been doing work on weapons for others if they needed them streamlined or more versatile.” She certainly wasn’t hurting for plans and things to use as examples.
---
Making weapons was something he was good at, but didn’t really have an opportunity to learn from anyone. So this was something exciting for him, it made joining the Agency all worth it honestly. Using weapons on the other hand, he wasn’t trained at all so he was a bit clumsy with them. Very unsure of himself when it came to actually fighting. “See I thought I was crazy for actually enjoying part of it, considering the circumstances.” He gave an awkward kind of grin and pushed some dark hair behind his ear that kept getting in his face.
“Awesome, I..wouldn’t mind getting more into it. Weapons design and creation I mean. But it isn’t the sort of thing you can just ask anyone. I had a few ideas, but getting them compact enough to be useful every day is another thing entirely.” He admitted with a shrug. “That sounds great. Thanks Ruby.” The lab was going to be a comfortable place, he was glad for it. “I should head off to see Kitty though now. I’ll be back around later and we can take a look at a few things? I had an idea for an early warning system of sorts for when shit goes sideways since t seems to be a regular occurrence. There might be a way to track it. But I’ll share those notes later.”
