Caroline had invited their entire group of friends to her home for Thanksgiving and, somehow Elena had agreed to help Caroline prepare everything. Which, given her rack record in the kitchen, may not have been the best idea she’d ever had.

“You do know I can almost literally burn water, right?’ She teased her friend, as she helped gather all of the ingredients that they would need. “So I hope ou’re not expecting too much beyond corn and dinner rolls.” And even those she might burn. But she was trying to keep things light and away from the topic of dreams or make-out sessions with...well..who knew what Damon was. Still an ex but...also something more now? At any rate it was hardly the best topic for the Thanksgiving dinner table.

“And if you want to try out a Martha Stewart recipe for orange cranberry sauce made from scratch...” That would be on Caroline, too.

It was Caroline's first Thanksgiving without her mom. The blonde was doing her best to keep busy and not think about it. Which of course meant hosting Thanksgiving for all her friends. Though she probably would have done that either way. But that wasn't the point. Decorating the house, preparing the meal, it helped keep her mind off the fact that her mom wasn't there. Especially when her friends were around to help her out. So Elena coming over to help her cook? It was the perfect distraction and much needed company.

"That's called boiling," she replied with a laugh. "Don't worry, I'll handle all the actual cooking part." As in anything to do with heat. "You can just help with all the prep." Her tone was light but she really could use help with all the chopping, and mixing ingredients before they went in the oven.

“Okay,” Elena nodded, smiling. “I can do prep.” Hopefully, as long as Caroline wasn’t expecting anything complicTed like a julienne cut. “What do you need me to do? And tell me in small terms.” She was only half teasing.

“I’d offer to set the table but I’m sure you’ve already googled how to fold napkins in the shape of turkeys kr something.”

Elena knew Caroline well. She planned on using pine-cones for a turkey body and folding the napkins around them to make the feathers. She also had a table cloth and fake leaves to put on the table. And of course the leaves had to be situated to her liking. But Elena could still help with the table cloth when the time came.

"Something like that," Caroline replied with her usual bright smile. "But you can still help. For now though can you start chopping the vegetables?"

While Elena got started with that Caroline put the rolls in the oven and then got to work braising the turkey. "So what's been going on with you? Other than med school of course." She knew that was pretty consuming.

“I can do that,” she nodded, grabbing the cutting board and a knife as she started chopping. And then Caroline had to ask what was going on.

“Medical school is the most time consuming, of course,” she agreed. “But I’ve dreamed more, too. The last time we talked I think I had gotten to Klaus returning to Mystic Falls. A lot has happened since then. I even sent Jeremy out to Denver to keep him safe...and then wound up taking a cross-country road trip to bring him back. ...Damon went with me. It was Stefan’s idea, in the dream.”

The idea of Elena and Damon on a road trip together didn't exactly sit well with Caroline. She knew things had been rocky with Stefan ever since Klaus brought back his ripper side. And Damon was well Damon. He seemed to have some kind of hold over Elena in both worlds.

"Oh?" Was all Caroline said as she continued prepping the turkey. She had a feeling there was more to the trip to Denver than Elena was telling her. And this was her way of asking.

She very carefully did not look at Caroline as she continued. “He said that I should see if I really wanted Damon.” There was a pause, the only sound the knife hitting the cutting board.

“We wound up in a motel. Kol had been stalking Jeremy, keeping an eye on him for Klaus, ready to use him as leverage against me. So we got Jeremy out of there and hid at a motel while Jeremy talked to a ghost and tried to figure out if you, Damon, and Stefan were part of Klaus’s line. ...there may have been a make-out session by the vending machines...”

The sire line dilemma. That was pretty fresh for Caroline as well. It still pissed her off that they knew Tyler was part of Klaus's sire line and were still willing to risk his life. Hell it hadn't been that long ago that she dreamed of Tyler's 'death'. Which turned out to be just Klaus in his body tricking her but that wasn't the point. The point was her friends had been willing to risk the love of her life.

However, before Caroline could get too riled up about that Elena went on. "You did what?" she asked setting her own knife down.

And there was the reaction she’d been dreading. Elena glanced up and then back down again. “I didn’t exactly plan it,” she answered. “We were in the motel room. I was in one bed, Jeremy was in the other, Damon was keeping watch in case Kol found us and...” A shake of her head.

“I woke up and he saw me watching him. He came over, he held my hand. He looked so earnest, Caroline. So invested in making sure I was okay. And I needed some air. He followed me outside. He kissed me so intensely... I don’t think I’ve ever lost myself in a kiss like I did then.”

"So because he was worried about you and your well being that erased all the things he did? All the people he killed? Your brother among them. Treating me, your best friend, like his own personal chew toy?" Not to mention all the compulsion. Caroline didn't even know if their 'relationship' was consensual.

But it wasn't dream!Elena's actions that upset Caroline. It was the way Elena was talking about them. It was almost as if some of those dream feelings carried over. Yeah, maybe Damon wasn't quite as evil in this world, but he was still the asshole that cheated on her best friends. "I know you can't control your dream actions. But don't let one," she paused letting out a sigh before continuing, "intense kiss erase all the horrible things he's done. In either world."

"No, of course it doesn't erase it," Elena shook her head. Caroline didn't get it. Or maybe Elena was in the wrong here. "Nothing can change that. He did terrible things. To you, to me, to a lot of people. He was a killer. But if someone is remorseful, if they are trying to be a better person, shouldn't we give them a second chance?"

Setting the knife down, Elena moved toward her friend, arms winding around Caroline. "It's not wiping away everything he did."

"Second chance doesn't mean make out with them," Caroline replied. She was never going to be okay with the idea of Elena and Damon. Not in the dreams and definitely not here. Maybe if he hadn't cheated on her and broken her heart, Caroline could give him a chance here. But that simply wasn't the case.

However, it was Thanksgiving. She didn't want to spend it arguing with her best friend. Especially over dreams. Even if the way Elena was talking about Damon was a bit worrisome. She returned her friends hug just as the oven started beeping, followed by the smell of smoke. "Shit! The rolls!"

Elena started to say something but the beeping oven interrupted her and they both sprang into action.

"Shit," Elena muttered, grabbing an oven mitt and racing to take the rolls out. They'd been rolls once upon a time, at least. Now the tops were a bit singed.

"...and this is why you don't want me in the kitchen," she answered ruefully, setting the hot pan on a waiting trivet.
