It had been a few months since something had happened in Orange County that required a more magical touch to deal with, but Freya wasn’t going to take her chances. Especially given everything that was going on in general. While Li had known that what Freya had done to help her wouldn’t last, it still did hurt that she hadn’t been able to find a more permanent solution that could have helped the girl and now she was dead. Besides, there was always bound to be something that would come up where she would need more than what she had at her disposal at home.
That, and with the different magical items that were housed there, Freya figured it would be good to ensure that nothing had gone missing. No need for a repeat of that particular dilemma. Though even then, that only worked when things were given to them and not hidden under someone’s mattress.
With most of her UN work up to date and then things at Pimpernel Outreach also up to date, Freya actually had time to go to the Magic Guild to make sure everything was in order, as well as perhaps see if any new books had shown up and see if there was anything she could practice. Once there, she noted that the wards were still in place and headed to the library. Where she noticed Amycus with tea and books. It was almost like being back in University and studying for exams.
***
Amycus hadn’t been able to sleep and rather than keep both himself and Regulus up while he battled his insomnia he’d come to the Magic Guild, making sure that the wards and security alarm on his house were all activated before kissing his fiancee goodbye and leaving the house. Hopefully an hour or so with the books would help him be able to sleep and then he’d go home but if it didn’t work - maybe tonight would be the night he found something in the books about removing the Mark. Or even just making it impossible for Tom Riddle to use if he ever did show up here somehow. He’d used Apparition so if any one else from the Guild showed up they might not realize he was here at first but he definitely wasn’t hiding from anyone who came into the library, having taken over one end of the table in there with his books.
He heard the door open and looked up from the page he was pouring over, almost at the point of declaring this book a loss for him with what he was looking for and gave Freya a small, tired small. “Care for a cup Freya?” He asked quietly, closing the book in front of him with a sigh. “There should still be some from the pot I made earlier.” Making tea was about as far as his culinary skills extended and he didn’t use tea bags for it so when he said he’d made a pot he’d made an entire pot.

Freya well knew what it was like to be unable to sleep. It was something she was trying to work on actually. Taking the time she needed to recharge and sleep. Which wasn’t always easy given the nature of her work and the constant barrage and attacks on those she worked to protect. But after she worked herself to illness, she was at least mostly doing better on that front.
Except when she had concerns about her siblings and things that would cross over. Even if it would take time, Freya was bound and determined to find answers before they were needed so that there was none of the panic. At least, that was one reason to be at the library right now. That and just general interest.
Hearing Amycus ask if she would care for a cup of tea, the blonde nodded.
“Sure. I never turn down a cup of tea.”
She was known to mainline it when she was at work.

Amycus used the excuse of getting it for her as an opportunity to stretch his legs after having been seated at that book for so long. He half thought that he and Freya were the only ones who ever drank the tea that was here so he’d gotten into the habit of stocking his favorites and the blends he’d observed her drinking the most during the hours they were both here. “Woman after my own heart,” he said, pouring it and handing it to her as he waved a hand almost lazily to bring the cream and sugar closer to her if she wanted either. “Wandless magic - something I’ve been practicing around the house so that I don’t have to worry so much about the twins or one of our animals getting their hands on my wand. Or paws in the case of the dogs.” He was pretty certain that Apollo, their cat, would just run the other way the minute he realized the round thing would roll if touched.
“So do I get to ask what brought you here so late tonight?”
***
Just as Freya was learning to take time for herself and not overwork herself (hey, some took longer to learn that than others), there was also something to be said to knowing when to take a break and stretch after sitting for hours. And it did seem that the two of them were the only ones who really went for the tea so she was more than happy with the teas that were often in stock at the Guild. It certainly made studying and going through books that much easier.
“Alas, we are both spoken for.” The comment was breezy as Freya didn’t put much stock into it, but if she was comfortable around someone, such comments came naturally and often without thought. She nodded at the explanation about wandless magic. It was one of those things that was both strange but not. There was no need for wands in her dreams with her magic, though her amulet did help her retain the stolen power of the ancestors from the Dreams as well as keep her grounded. But Freya also was familiar with how magic varied depending on dreams.
“Makes sense.” As for why she was there that late? “Mostly I have the time right now after my trip and wanted to make sure everything was where it should be and just general wanting to see if there was anything new to look into.” Given her perchance for being busy, she did keep odd hours sometimes with the Guild, “You?”

“Maybe in our next lives,” Amycus said joking with her. His engagement was a known fact around the Guild even though they hadn’t set a date yet. He and Regulus were waiting for the right time for their schedules and his parents so they could come over from England for the wedding. They weren’t in any rush.
He tried to remember if she’d mentioned anything to him about a trip and it rang familiar on some level but he couldn’t remember any specific details. “I couldn’t sleep. Figured I’d come and see if there was anything in the books that I hadn’t read yet to deal with this.” He said, turning his arm to show her the Mark on it. “I’ve pretty much determined that I won’t be able to find a way to remove it entirely so I’ve changed over to just deactivating in case...Riddle ever shows up here. I don’t want him to be able to command me through it like in the dreams.” And if he could deactivate his than he could do the same for Regulus’ if it ever showed up. He hadn’t told him about knowing that he joined up too but he was preparing for it.
“How did your trip go anyway?” Freya was one of the few people here at the Guild that he felt comfortable with enough to talk about their lives on a deeper level than the casual how are you doing.
***
“Perhaps.” Really, it was just a miracle her aunt had never tried to set her up with Regulus while she’d been in England and under her aunt’s ‘care’ but with Dahlia dead and the past in the past…. So instead it was just joking comments as both were in their respective relationships, with Amycus even engaged. While Freya was just finally letting herself enjoy a relationship after being traumatized thanks to what Dahlia had done back when she’d been in university.
Freya had indeed mentioned the trip mostly just because she’d be gone for three weeks so that Amycus would need to check the wards more since she wouldn’t be around to do her usual checks. Though as he explained why he was there? The blonde just nodded. That made a lot of sense. She was always a major proponent of people having a choice in their decisions so tattoos that made you follow someone? Yeah. “Got it. I don’t think we have anything like that in my Dreams but if I come up with something, I’ll let you know.”
Taking a sip of her tea, Freya smiled at the question.
“It was good.” Then she paused for a moment, “Well the last leg in New York was a bit….trying since I had to not hex Trump while he addressed the UN General Assembly since I was there for that. But besides needing to be talked out of that, it was good.”
***
“I appreciate it. I’m fairly certain there’s nothing in my Dreams for it since if there were - the Aurors would have just used it on all of us that they brought in and there were quite a few after our leader got defeated the first time. By a baby actually so...really my Dreamself is just an idiot.”
Amycus let out a loud laugh at her comment about not hexing Trump and shook his head. “I doubt any of us would have blamed you if you had given into the temptation to do that. I might have been a bit put out by you not giving me a call to join in it but...I’d have forgiven you before too long.” He teased.
***
“Wouldn’t that be helpful if the things we needed were actually in the Dreams?” Goodness knew that there were times Freya wished that there were easier solutions in her Dreams but no, of course not. Or there was an answer, but getting it? Near impossible. At least she had what she needed should the ‘Beast’ bite crossover for Elijah, Finn, and Kol. And she could still channel the power of the Ancestors if she her amulet on (which had its own complications by how she got that power that should have been a one off) but the sacrifice? Though with the ‘Beast’ bite cure, it may not be necessary. But this was Orange County so she wasn’t holding her breath.
As for hexing Trump?
“Oh, I know. I needed to reach out to Percy for him to be a voice of reason and he reminded me that it could lead to a literal witch hunt given this administration. Plus he’d become a martyr and having to go down the line of succession until there was someone who wouldn’t make things worse? In the end it was just better not to. Though sometimes I still think that’s debatable.”
***
Amycus leaned against the table near her, turning his head towards her as he listened to her. “Probably better him than me. I’d have merely told you not to get caught or leave any evidence of being behind it.” He told her with a grin. But that was a general thing he told his clients and...most of the people in his life actually. He liked to try and play it off as a joke but he was actually pretty serious about it. He’d given up on the idea of keeping them from breaking the law - probably right around the same time he’d realized that a part of him was a criminal (if only in some weird other life) - and started focusing on getting them to just be smart about it.
“Well if you do decide to go that route...I’m fairly certain we have enough people with powers connected to this place to at least keep that homophobe from taking power right away. I’ve also been watching the Network and I think...some of those college kids might be up to something.”
***
“For all his antics at times, he tends to be good at being a voice of reason. Especially since I think anyone else I might have reached out to would have said something similar.” Never let it be said that Freya wasn’t responsible. Because she easily could have called someone who would have said what Amycus would have, or encouraged her. The law was...tricky. It was why she wasn’t so opposed to the use of compulsion if it came to keeping abusive assholes from the women who sought help at Pimpernel Outreach. It was why she was always willing to bend things if it meant helping.
“Perhaps.” The mention of college kids planning something did cause her to quirk a brow though. Admittedly she was iffy when it came to the Network. She had alerts set up for certain people so if they posted she would check. And she did check periodically just not often. “Oh? Do I want to know or is it one of those better not to ask type situations?”
***
“Regulus tends to be my voice of reason when I reach that point so I understand about needing one.” Amycus told her. “And with my line of work - that happens a lot more than people think. If that damn Skeeter troll ever shows up in my face, I might need to call more than just him for that.” He confessed.
He laughed at that question. “For once it’s something I can actually support. They’re trying to figure out a way to get people their ages to the polls to vote in the upcoming election. Encourage them to vote if they want to make a change. Rather than just...complain how things aren’t changing. I’m almost a little proud of them even though I don’t know either of them for taking the initiative on it.”
***
Really, everyone needed a voice of reason. While in the family, usually she or Elijah had to be the voice of reason, Freya had her moments when she needed one as well. And while Evie usually was a good voice of reason, with her being an assassin in her dreams? Best to go to Percy for that.
“Well that’s something. I have to say that I’m impressed.” Given how often it seemed young people often didn’t grasp the importance of voting and had very...interesting...ideas about it. So the fact that they were wanting to get out the vote. Go figure.
***
“I hope they manage to get their classmates to listen to them on it.” Amycus said as he lazily summoned his tea to himself. “You ever think about popping back to England and...saying goodbye to all of the insanity that this country has become?”
***
“So do I.”
Taking a sip of her tea, Freya sighed.
“Sometimes I think about going back to my international contracts, which you know...means a year or year and a half in any given location. But it’s not like it’s an isolated incident here. The hatred and rise of authoritarian and fascist ideologies is rising up all over. I mean, England alone is dealing with the fallout of Brexit.”
It was depressing to think about. Then again Freya’s more known work as well as the investigating of war crimes did mean she tended to be more intune with global affairs.
***
“True. Clearly the solution to that is getting colonies on other planets. And then setting up ideal civilizations in the colonies there.” Amycus said, trying to steer the conversation away from anything dark and back towards...some type of lighter topic. There was a lot of darkness in the back of his mind these days and he was trying to tamp it down anyway he could.
***
Getting to a lighter topic was more than okay with Freya. She dealt with enough darkness in her work as it was, and then the Dreams whenever they decided to strike. There had been a time when it seemed they were constant and now they had slowed down and she was left in Dream limbo.
“Cleary.”

“You can be the head of one and I’ll be the head of one and then we’ll have at least two.” Amycus joked, sipping at his tea.
***
“Sounds perfect.”
