After she had woken up in her current condition, Mary immediately phoned Laurence, realizing that he would know something was wrong from her voice. She wasn’t sure if she was relieved or worried when she heard his own young voice, immediately knowing what had befallen him. She was in a near panic herself, but even in his state, he was able to calm her and they agreed on meeting at a park in between their residents.
Mary was eager to see him and she was the first to arrive, settling herself on a bench, her hands clasped in her lap. All of the clothes had been too big for her, of course, but for now she was wrapped in a rather large overcoat, hiding the fact that everything else was too big. She would go shopping later, but for now, she just needed to see a familiar face to help calm her nerves.
“Hey girl! You know, if you actually wore some clothes that fit you, you’d look pretty hot.” Mary glanced up at the inappropriate comment, a look of pure shock and disgust on her face. “Excuse me boy, but that is not a very appropriate comment to other people!” She had forgotten that her usual demeanor didn’t come off the same way now that she was younger than the boys she was trying to scold.
“Ooooh, listen to Little Miss Priss!” He grinned at her, not the kind of grin a girl likes to see. It made her feel uneasy, even more so when he started to make his way over to her. She quickly stood up, pulling her jacket closer to herself.
“Aw, don’t try and cover up honey! You’re not so bad!”
Laurence had thought that he was growing accustomed to the strange phenomenon that was common in the Orange County, but that was only until he woke up in the body of a fourteen year old. To be fair, it was his own body, but it was very peculiar.
All of his clothes were far, far too large for him, fourteen still being before he had filled out, and while he had broad shoulders for a young man, it was nothing compared to the width of them as an adult. He looked not unlike a clown when he’d gotten dressed, and had quickly decided that it was unacceptable. Fortuitously, there was a clothing store not too far from his flat which opened early, and he was able to go there, though not without attracting some stares along the way. He was just paying for his new outfits when he received Mary’s phone call, and he agreed to go meet her, deciding to take a taxi instead of risking a fine for driving in his current state.
It seemed as though he had taken too much time to get there though, as by the time he arrived, Mary was already being set upon by a pack of ruffians. Without thinking, Laurence broke a branch off a nearby tree, still wet and willowy and therefore more likely to hurt than one that was old and dry. He rushed in with a cry, swinging his stick with all his might, and nearly as soon as contact was made, he was raising red welts upon the boys.
Mary had been uncomfortable with the first comment that had been made to her, but she was starting to feel unsafe as they had started to pursue her. Her mind had been completely taken over by the sole purpose of getting away from them, that she had forgotten about her meeting with William. That is, until he came to her rescue.
It was almost comical to see the boys who had just harassed her turn into such whimpering babies as William hit them with his stick. For a moment, Mary was beside herself, not quite understanding what was happening. When she finally came to and realized who was chasing the boys away, she felt a bit lightheaded. She had to sit back down, both thankful and overwhelmed at the same time.
By the time he came back, she had come to feel a bit better. She looked up as his footsteps approached, at first a bit apprehensive but practically jumping into his arms at his arrival. “Oh William, I’m so thankful you are here.” Her voice was a bit muffled as she buried her face in his shoulder, suddenly embarrassed that he had to witness and save her from that exchange. But William had always been there for her. He had checked in on her during her first experience in the OC. He had even gone out of his way to stay with her during her own uncertainty. All of the hesitations she may have had before suddenly seemed silly and everything that had been holding her back seemed to let go at the same time.
She kept her arms around him, moving to capture his lips with hers in the briefest, but most heartfelt, kiss. She caught herself immediately and pulled back, a blush rising to her cheeks.
“Oh dear, I-I do apologize William…”
Laurence couldn’t help but to wrap his arms around Mary when she flung herself against her chest, and stroked her hair comfortingly. He was more than a little surprised when she kissed him, and it took his brain too long to catch up what was happening, meaning that for the entirety of the too-brief kiss, he had all the charisma of a statue.
No wonder she pulled away and apologized so quickly. He didn’t quite know what was wrong. It was not unlike he had never been kissed before. “It’s quite ALRight,” Laurence said, attempting to sound cool and instead feeling horrified as his voice cracked. He could feel the heat of the humiliation rising to his cheeks.
It was actually just the thing Mary needed, making the moment a bit more endearing than embarrassing. She ducked her head, hiding the smile that crept across her face as he voice cracked. She didn’t want to make him feel bad about it, but it was quite cute.
It took another moment before she cleared her throat, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear and shyly glancing up at him again. It was the first time she actually felt the right age for the feelings coursing through her. “Quite a way to start the day, don’t you think?” Now that she wasn’t worried about unwanted attention from other young men, she was able to take in his younger appearance. “You look…” Handsome? Cute? “Young.” Right. Very observative, Mary. She sighed.
“I do hope this doesn’t last very long.”
“You as well,” Laurence said, with a bit of a smile. “It’s quite charming.” He offered his arm to her. “Since we’re here, and I assume quite unable to attend work, perhaps we should make a day of it. Ice cream?” Not a food that he commonly partook in, but he did have quite the craving.
Mary felt hopeful that he didn’t seem quite appalled by the kiss and happily took his arm, finding the idea of ice cream not as ridiculous as she might have in her regular body.
“I think that sounds lovely.”
