Stormflower had finally come through his dreams, and, it seemed, not too soon. It was only the next day when the OC was overrun with what looked like demons. He really had no qualms with going out to fight the demons. Keeping the people of Orange County safe was the obvious thing to do for anyone who had the ability to do it, which Ren did.
But did Nora have to be so enthusiastic about it? He’d been working on improving his endurance with Pyrrha, which meant that chasing after Nora wasn’t nearly as gruelling as it normally was, but he was still exhausted. “Nora. Slow down.”
“WOO HOO!!!” Was Nora’s only reply as she sprung from a car roof upward. Then, as she started her downward turn, she used the momentum to swing her hammer around hard on top of one of the bad guys. That’s what they were to Nora. All of the dangerous creatures and whatnot? They were “bad guys.” Easy enough.
It went splat under the force of her hammer, and Nora was momentarily slowed. “Eeew,” she said, as she examined the paste under her hammer.
Ren grimaced at the sight. Say what you would about Grimm, at least they disappeared once they were killed and there was none of the usual mess that came with smashing something with Nora’s hammer. He was distracted from the mess, however, by a pricking at the back of his neck. He had learned to recognize the feeling as danger, and he deftly dodged the green, glowing sword that came down right where Ren had been standing. He pointed his guns at the rock creature, and fired several shots, before managing to get in behind it and stab it with the blades attached to his weapons.
Nora flipped the hammer up and around, the handle folding in and compacting, and the head of the hammer came into her arms. The weapon had transformed into a grenade launcher. She gave a little war cry and fired three of the grenades at the nearby monsters, making a few little explosions that turned the things into flying gore and random limbs.
Ren leapt away again from one of the demons, nibley dodging it attacks, though he realized too late that he was dodging right into the range of another one of them. He was off balance, not quite finding his feet, when the second demon slammed its fist into him and sent him flying. He landed painfully on the cement and rolled to a stop.
“That’s my cue!” Nora cried out, and flipped the hammer-slash-grenade-launcher again in her arms. It unfolded into the hammer with the head side down. One of her feet came to rest on it, and the other kicked up--then she clicked the trigger. The explosion from the end sent her hurtling through the air in Ren’s direction. She landed near him, though completely off balance, and did a flop-roll that was fairly painful. At least she was upright again with the weapon in her hands quickly.
“You all right?” She called out to him, ready to fend off any approaching monsters while Ren got back to his feet.
Ren groaned, and, after a moment to catch his breath, sat up. He was glad that Nora was there to watch his back when he got knocked down. “I think so,” he said, gingerly palpating his ribs. They were tender, but he didn’t think they were broken, and his aura was already working at healing him. “Are you?”
“So far so good!” Nora said, engaging in a little hand-to-hand combat with one of the bad guys. She grinned at Ren over her shoulder just as the monster she was battling landed a swing straight to her stomach. All of the air was knocked out of her lungs and she was knocked off her feet. She flew backward a little, through the air, and landed on her side a few feet away from her hammer.
“Nora!” Ren cried, leaping to his feet. The monster was going toward Nora to finish her off, but Ren was there first, peppering its head with shots from his twin pistols, blossoms of ice appearing on its skin before just as quickly disappearing.
His stormflower didn’t have much power to them, but Ren didn’t need something that packed a big punch, preferring instead quick strikes. With a leap, he was on its shoulders, driving the blades attached to them into its skull.
Nora laid on the ground for a moment unable to gasp for air. The sounds were an echo-y din around her, the light of day far too bright in her eyes. Her body convulsed once as her lungs refused to fill with air, her diaphragm refused to move. She was terrified--she thought she was dying. But then she somehow managed to inhale deeply and sharply, and the pain--the world--came back into focus. Coughing, Nora rolled onto her side and heaved in deep breaths of slightly smokey air, eyes pressed firmly closed.
Ren quickly looked around his surroundings, being sure that there was nothing nearby that could possibly attack while he was distracted, and then he ran to Nora’s side, sliding down on his knees to her side and not concerned by the scraped knees. His aura would heal them before they even got home.
“Nora?” he called, placing a hand on her shoulder and taking another quick look around for danger. The coast was still clear. “Nora, are you okay?”
Nora gasped, curled onto her side, then rolled onto her back, wheezing. “Awww, man!” She finally coughed out. “That sucked!!” WAIT! Her hammer! Where was her hammer!? It had slipped out of her hand when she’d been knocked through the air. She should have known better--her hammer was an extension of her own arm, practically a part of herself.
She sat up with a groan, looking around for her hammer.
Ren let out a heavy sigh of relief as Nora sat up. It didn’t seem like the damage was too bad, and while she did seem to be having trouble moving, he didn’t think there would be any lasting damage. He looked around with her, instinctively knowing what she was looking for. “Don’t move,” he instructed her once he spotted the hammer some ways off. He reluctantly stood and left her to go retrieve it.
Nora gave a cough, a yelp, a wince, and then collapsed back onto the pavement. Not moving was something she could absolutely do. She may have broken a rib, or something, when that force threw her through the air. She landed hard, too. She was going to be all kinds of bruised tomorrow. “....okay… do you see it? Please find it.”
It didn’t take Ren long to get to the hammer, keeping his eyes peeled and paying special attention to his senses as he went to make sure another one of those monsters wasn’t going to jump out of nowhere. It took quite a bit of effort to lift Nora’s hammer, but with a grunt he finally managed to heft it up, and he rested it on his shoulder. He slowly managed to make his way back to Nora, and rested it next to her.
