Sun had been so preoccupied during that strange occurrence in her area, that she hadn’t kept the same precautions in place during the attacks. Her mind had been on making her living space safe from those creatures and didn’t check in on her various alerts to try and evade her brother’s ever persistent henchmen. She had spent the last day trying to get everything back in order and was happy to hear that not much had changed on the other side of the world. The company was getting ready for a big party, a sort of homecoming for her brother to try and make the best of a bad situation, so perhaps he had lessened the load for them.
Sun could appreciate the break.
She found herself sitting at her kitchen counter, a bowl of ramen in front of her. She wasn’t really eating it, but dipping the noodles in and out of the broth, watching as the steam rose in front of her. She sighed, propping her head up with her hand, about to take a bite of the noodles when some movement caught her eye. She slowly glanced across the table, shocked to see someone standing on the other side.
Things had finally started to slow down, a fact that had been a huge relief for Will. He wasn’t going to complain about needing to go out and fight zombies and demons, but it had been exhausted, and when it finally ended he had been more than happy to get his sleeping schedule back on track and to get back into the routine of the beat.
He was at his desk now, reading over a file for an attempted murder case. He’d gone to help apprehend the perp, who had been living with the victim who was also a cop. There was something about the arrest, and the case in general, that just didn’t feel right to Will, and he’d been trying to figure it out, a bagel, slathered in cream cheese, half raised to his mouth as he concentrated.
At least, that’s how he sat until he saw something from the corner of his eye. He looked up from the file, right into the face of a woman who was… eating ramen on his desk? He shot a look at Judy as if to say ‘get a load of this woman,’ but Judy wasn’t really paying attention and she didn’t seem to have noticed anything weird. He looked back, and realized the woman looked familiar. He was sure he had dreamed of her, and even more certain that she had commented on his post on the Network.
“Can I help,” he started, but then, suddenly, he wasn’t at his desk anymore but rather standing in what looked like kitchen, “you,” he finished, uncertainly.
The man seemed to be as confused as she was and she couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow when he asked if he could help her with something. “Isn’t that something I should be asking you?” She leaned against the counter, only to find it had changed and she was now standing in a police department. She looked around her, watching as the policemen worked around her, some walking people in cuffs, some sitting at a desk like Will was. She looked over at him, a look of bewilderment in her eyes.
“What have you done?” she asked. “How did I get here?” But it was all kinda familiar as well. Kind of like that dream, the birthday one. She glanced at the man again, realizing who it was.
“Will?”
“I’m as in the dark as you are,” Will responded, though realization seemed to hit him at about the same moment as it did with Sun.
“Yeah, that’s me,” he said. No one else had seemed to notice her, and so he leaned forward on his desk, closer to her, and dropped his voice. “You’re Sun, right? We’re not dreaming right now, are we?” He was pretty sure they weren’t. He’d slept well the night before.
Judy glanced over to Will’s side, thinking he was talking to her. But Sun? “Unless you’ve fallen asleep, I don’t think we’re sleeping.” She gave him a funny look, dropping the paper she had been studying for a case. “Everything alright Gorski?”
Will glanced at Judy, then back at Sun. He wanted to ask if she could see Sun too, but even before the question left his lips, he knew that she couldn’t. “Everything’s fine,” he assured her, looking at Sun from the corner of his eye.
Judy gave him a skeptical look. “You sure? You look a little...frazzled.” She shook her head, picking up the document again. “You should go get some fresh air before you burn out. We still have two cases to wrap up!” It was one of the things she appreciated about Will; he didn’t leave all the paperwork for her to fill out.
Sun glanced from Will to Judy, not saying a word. It didn’t quite make sense, but she didn’t want to make things worse for Will with what appeared to be his partner. She was fortunate enough to be home alone when Will visited. Which how did that happen? How could they decided which location to be at?
They were suddenly back in her kitchen and she blinked, looking back over at Will. “If you respond to me here, will your partner hear your response?”
“I’m fine,” Will managed, before they were whisked back to Sun’s apartment. At her question, he frowned, thinking it over.
“I don’t know,” he said. “Judy?” he asked, turning back to where Judy was. He was back in the precinct now, and she didn’t seem to respond, which was probably for the best because he wasn’t sure how he would have explained calling her. He flashed back to Sun’s apartment. “Doesn’t look like it,” he said, not really sure how he was controlling this, but it seemed to be getting easier the more they jumped back and forth.
“This is weird,” she said slowly, moving from around the counter to stand in front of him. “How can we decide where we go?” They were back at the department and she frowned. She suddenly wished she was wearing more clothes, despite people not being able to see her. “Or are we at the mercy of...whatever is making us do this?” While Sun had had one dream, strangely the one she had shared with Will and Lito on their birthday, she didn’t quite seem to understand how they were able to celebrate all together. Then it seemed like they had more control over it than what they were currently experiencing.
“Maybe if I…” Sun concentrated on her apartment and they were suddenly back. She gave Will a wide-eyed, but pleased look.
Will smiled back, no longer too worried about looking insane. It seemed that if he was at Sun’s place, no one could tell that he was talking to her. “So, is this your home?” he asked, glancing around. “Want to give me the tour?”
Her face settled back into its normal resting look of indifference as she thought about his question. She had never had anyone over to her place before, Will was her first guest since she had arrived in California. She only hesitated for a moment before she nodded her head and waved her hand around her. “This is my kitchen and living room,” she said, a bit obvious in that. The counter served as a nice separation between the two, but it made the whole area feel a lot bigger. She moved to leave this room, leading Will through her rather spacious studio apartment. She liked the views and thought it was the perfect size for herself.
“Nothing much to see,” she said, which was true. She didn’t own too many things; enough furniture to make it comfortable and a few paintings here and there for decoration. Overall, it certainly had that minimalist feel to it, something that seemed to suit Sun just fine.
“Does this mean I will receive a tour of your apartment?”
“I’m sure you will someday,” he said, with a bit of a smile. Especially if just showing up with one another was going to become a regular thing. “But it’s not much. And it’s kind of messy.” Sun seemed to keep her apartment much tidier than Will did, though after work somedays he was just too exhausted to do any real cleaning. But if Sun, and, possibly Lito, were going to be stopping by unannounced, it might not be a bad idea to start doing some sort of cleaning.
Sun smiled, crossing her arms in front of her. She wouldn’t push the subject; perhaps it would give him time to clean his place before she might pop in unannounced. “What were you thinking about before you saw me?” she asked. Maybe that had to do with how they were connecting with each other.
“Breakfast, mostly,” Will said, and with a smile he took a bit of his bagel as if to prove it. “You too?” he asked. She had been eating Ramen when she’d shown up at his desk.
She nodded her head, looking between his bagel and her ramen. “Maybe that’s what brought us together?” Their shared empty stomach? It seemed ridiculous, but at least it was some sort of connection. She glanced at the clock on her wall. “Which is it really breakfast at 1 in the afternoon?”
Will nodded. That would make sense that something like that would bring them together. Even in the dreams, all of them celebrating their birthdays would have been what brought them all together.
“It is when you work my hours,” he said with a bit of a grin. “Shift work’s a bitch sometimes.” Not that he minded being a street cop. It beat being a desk jockey, at least.
“I guess it’s better you’re eating when you can.” She paused.
“How do you think you’ll be able to get back to work?” Because he wasn’t really here...right? It was like a projection of his mind mixed with hers. She had no basis for this, just a theory she had from the one dream they had shared.
Will shrugged. “I think I just have to,” and then, suddenly, he was back at his desk. “Think about it,” he finished. It supposed he shouldn’t be too surprised that it worked. It was how he got to Sun’s place in the first place.
