There wasn’t much that Ruby could really do at the Agency. Jemma had been working on something for the flu outbreak, but that wasn’t really her area of expertise. She could have come up with some designs and weapons but given they were dealing with an immediate threat, it wasn’t like there was actually time for her to do that. So with there being nothing she could do at present in regards to science, it was the other thing she did best. Fight monsters.
So with Crescent Rose in hand and red cloak on, Ruby had thrown herself into the fray of demon fighting. She was still helping and that was what was important. She had sent a message out to Weiss to see if she wanted to meet up and fight things (power in numbers after all) and they had agreed on a location where to meet up.
So far it was relatively quiet but Ruby knew that wouldn’t last. But at least it gave them a chance to catch their breath and come up with some sort of game plan.
Getting into the spirit of things, Weiss had arrived in her original battle skirt, and had even done her hair up the way she always did in the dreams. It felt kind of good to be doing something like this - helping people, using the dream training, and wearing things from that other life. That place was a place where she was coming into her own.
"Something about this feels like going home again," Weiss commented, while making sure her weapon was ready. It had come with dust inside of it, but she had no extras. She had to be sparing today. "And I'M in the mood to kick a little demon behind. How do we want to approach this? The magic guild was of surprisingly little use as far as preparation goes. Whatever these demons are, they’re from a dream no one’s catalogued yet."
Maybe if she’d used google. Something about this was probably somewhere on the internet.
There was nothing wrong with getting into the spirit of things! Ruby herself had more or less integrated who she’d been before the Dreams and who she was in the Dreams into who she was now. Admittedly not all that much was different. A bit more mellow, not as gung ho on weapons as weapons (the tech though? That was something else entirely) but always wanting to help because someone had to and it was the right thing to do. She just could fight now.
She wasn’t going to lie though, her cloak was definitely like an extension of her at times. Especially when it came to fighting.
“It’s definitely familiar, and definitely not rare here.” There were a lot of invasions Ruby had realized in the area. Which meant that fighting things that were almost like Grimm but not was pretty par the course for Orange County every few months. Ruby had heard something about the Magic Guild but had never really paid much attention to them since there wasn’t really anything she felt she needed to ask them about.
“Well from what I saw getting here,” Meaning she had done some 1v1 on demons, “It’s pretty straight forward in fighting them until they stop moving. They can be smart but we’re smarter.”
It definitely sounded like Ruby had faced a few on the way, and Weiss couldn't blame her. Ruby was Ruby, after all. She just gave her friend a fond smile, and nodded her head. "We're definitely smarter. And far more agile. And better looking."
Screams erupted from a nearby block, and Weiss pointed in that direction with her sword. Flames were already starting to billow out of a building, and a rush of people were starting to flood the street. She raised goth of her eyebrows at the scene, and then shrugged a shoulder. "At least we won't have any trouble finding our prey?"
Weiss didn't bother asking Ruby if she had a plan. No doubt, a plan would come along when both of them needed it the most. She just hoped her glyph work was up to snuff as she started heading in the direction of the ensuing chaos.
Helping people and fighting monsters was kind of Ruby’s thing. And also just having to deal with the demons on her way to where she and Weiss had agreed to meet up. It came with the territory really. But no matter.
“Yes, yes we are!”
The screams cut off anything else to be said and her gaze focused on where they needed to go, already running through different scenarios and what the best course of action would be. So with a nod to the comment on not having trouble finding their way, Ruby headed in the direction, using a running start and jump so she could get an aerial shot (quite literally) of one of the demons with Crescent Rose while in sniper mode.
Landing she called out an attack formation to Weiss so that they could work in tandem.
Without even answering, Weiss slid into place, spinning a glyph into the air for Ruby to send ammunition through. Ice crackled through the air towards a large demon, pinning it into place momentarily and slowing it down. Her sword arced, sending a flash of flame at the demon, and then she flipped backwards a pace as it began to pick up speed and charge.
"I think I can slow time around it, I just need a second to set it up."
Nodding at Weiss’ comment, Ruby nodded.
“I’ll distract it so you can set up!”
With that, she ran forward and used Crescent Rose to propel her in the air and switched mid-air to the sniper rifle mode in order to shoot at the thing and use the ricochet of shooting to move.
Weiss swallowed back a nervous lump in her throat and cooly nodded her head. She still had no idea what went on in Ruby's mind when they were in combat. They both always looked more composed and more put together - Ruby especially came off a little more coordinated - but that didn't mean they both weren't internally screaming.
Or at least, she was. She'd never done this before. But slowing its movements would give Ruby a huge advantage, and Weiss was determined to get this done. Her blade spun to a different dust, and she concentrated on the ground under the demon as Ruby distracted it. A huge glyph spun into place, symbols of a clock and gears forming and then reversing as time slowed around it. She couldn't help but let out a little smirk as she shouted, "THERE!"
Ruby was definitely more coordinated when in combat because that’s where her energy was focused. It was the same with ice skating, really. It was just life in general and when she didn’t need to think about such things that she was seemingly more spastic and uncoordinated. It was a goal, something to work towards. She didn’t have time to freak out internally about what if something went wrong. Bad things happened if she let that occur and so she didn’t.
And with the proper timing, she was better able to dispatch more of the monsters now that Weiss had slowed time down. She was fine with mid-air shooting but this was definitely better as she switched to Scythe mode.
Definitely gross though. Weiss was right about the Grimm, at least there wasn’t any gross remains to deal with after the fact.
"Oh, this is going to get disgusting," Weiss commented, agreeing with Ruby's internal thoughts as the Scythe swapped in. She switched her own weapon back to ice and gritted her teeth as she moved in to close the distance as well. Weiss could fight from afar, but she needed to save her aura for more important things than staying clean.
Plus, she wouldn't let Ruby be the only one with demon blood on their battle skirt. "I'll get the other side!" She shouted, and then changed her approach to circle around, attacking the demon from the left and hoping to throw it off. They didn't have anyone to really tank the damage, so they had to be careful.
“I wish Yang were here,” She added, as she moved to strike.
At least her job was used to this sort of thing. It was what they did really. And so she didn’t mind it too much. Grossness aside. Besides, no matter what it was she was doing, she wanted to help people. Be it inventing new things or fighting demons and getting covered in demon gunk.
“Okay!”
With Weiss on the other side, Ruby called out another attack formation for them to use. Though she did have to agree on wishing Yang were there.
“Me too.”
They probably should have waited for her but too late now. And there would undoubtedly be more of these things. It was the Orange County way after all. She just hoped that Blake and Ilia were also doing okay. And Team JNPR. But she couldn’t think too much on that at the moment. It was focusing on the demons around them which seemed very confused and trying to fight back but getting worn down.
The demon roared at their attack and unfurled gigantic wings, beating them furiously and kicking up the air around them. Small whirlwinds began to form, threatening to knock them off balance, and Weiss spun a few glyphs into the air to jump clear. The other demons were getting worn down, but she wasn't sure if this was the demon's hail mary move or if they were in for more trouble.
She changed the dust on her weapon to stone, and set a glyph on the ground underneath Ruby to keep her in place. "Do you think you can get rid of those wings?"
Ruby was, after all, amazing at coming up with plans for conquering seemingly impossible tasks.
Okay. That was...not gonna be good for the area if the whirlwinds got any bigger. Fighting it? That would be fun because there was that rush of adrenaline. But the damage that would be done? Not so much. At least there weren’t people around who could get hurt. At least the area was cleared of civilians. That meant there was one less thing to worry about.
“On it!”
There was no yes or no to if she could get rid of the wings, she simply was going to. Because it was Ruby and that was how she approached these sorts of situations. Just do it as she could tend to see a number of different ways in the blink of an eye when it came to strategies. And with Weiss providing her glyphs, Ruby used them and her speed to propel herself into the air, spin in a burst of rose petals and with Crescent Rose in Scythe mode? Off came the wings of the demon, as she rolled into a landing, spun and switched to rifle mode and did a headshot to the demon.
The demons around them did seem to be weakening and with this one now down? She just jumped with a fist in the air. What? There was nothing wrong with celebrating a win.
“Go Team Whiterose!”
Even Weiss wasn't immune to a good team cheer, not where no one else was looking but Ruby, anyway. She gave Ruby a smile and hooked her sword against her waist before providing a low-key high five.
"I knew all of that practice was going to pay off!" She said, as she watched the remaining demons scatter and run away. The area was safe, and a double headed snake hadn't even blown up a bakery.
Which meant the local coffee place was still capable of serving them. She indicated it with a finger, "So... celebratory snacks? I'm buying."
