Nora was super excited. Not only was she going out for Food Truck food, but she was out in a new dress, too! Nora wasn’t all that into fashion. Actually, Nora didn’t have a lot of money for fashion at all. She spent a lot of time digging through thrift stores for the cheapest clothes possible, and normally only when absolutely necessary. But this was a dress she picked up at Target, and she thought it was super cute! So she spun a little, enjoying how the skirt billowed out around her, then caught up with Ren.
“What kind of food are we gonna get?” She asked, bouncing in her sandals. “Something super spicy? Oooh, or something in a wrap! Everyone loves a good wrap, am I right?”
Ren couldn’t help but smile a little when Nora would twirl around in her dress. It was cute, he had to admit. And it hadn’t been very often in their life when Nora had been able to buy clothing that she enjoyed for being cute, instead of buying because it was cheap. It felt good to finally be in the black, financially. Which mean that going to the food trucks at the night market was an absolute must.
He’d been saving up for a couple of weeks for this, so he felt no problem saying “you can get whatever you’d like, Nora.” He did have dessert planned out, an ice cream truck called Sweet Kloud that seemed to specialize in brightly coloured ice cream. He was sure Nora would love it. “I had been thinking I would get kebabs.”
It felt like lately things had been better for Nora and Ren financially than it’d ever been for them in the past. Nora was bringing in a little money working for Kanan, and their expenses were down. So she was able to go to a movie! And buy a dress! It felt good. Totally different, and a little terrifying, but good.
Nora turned to Ren and gave him the biggest smile she had. “Kebabs sounds amazing! Ooh, and maybe some loaded french fries??” They probably had to put a cap on how much they were going to spend. Nora wanted one of everything! ...or, at least a main course, a side, and a dessert. The girl could eat.
“Kebabs and loaded french fries coming up,” Ren said. The inflection in his voice rarely changed to the untrained ear, but anyone who knew him well would no doubt be able to hear his excitement. He took Nora’s hand, and lead her toward the kebab stand.
Nora’s heart may have skipped a little bit when Ren’s hand wrapped around hers. Just a little. She moved with him to the semi-circle of Food Trucks, trying not to have a skip in her feet as well as her heart. But it was hard. There was just so much excitement!
She squeezed his hand when they reached the line, and didn’t release it while they waited. “I’m so glad we made it out here! I’m so hungry. Are you?”
Ren gave her hand a gentle squeeze back and made no move to pull his hand away. “I could eat,” Ren admitted, which was Ren-speak for being pretty hungry. “What do you think you’ll get?” he asked.
“Definitely the loaded french fries.” Nora’s eyes sparkled as she thought about how amazingly delicious they were. With all those sauces and meats and cheese? Yummo! She would probably make a bit of a mess, and get it all over her hands and fingers--and probably her face, too--but somehow her clothes remained unscathed. “I’ll trade you some loaded fries for a bite of your kebab!”
“Deal,” Ren said, warmly. Despite the crowds, the lines seemed to move quickly, and it didn’t take the two of them very long to get their food in hand. Ren looked around for a place for them to sit and enjoy their meal, and found it in a low wall, somewhere between hip and knee height, that surrounded a garden and a couple of trees. He nodded his head toward it, walked over, and sat down.
Nora bounced along after him, careful not to spill her food, and plunked down beside him on the wall. It was an absolutely beautiful day--not too hot, but she wasn’t in fear of a sunburn, either. She started to dig into her food, giving little moans of pleasure with each bite. The day was lovely, but the company was even better. Nora gave him a bright smile. “Wanna trade bites?”
Ren couldn’t help but let a small smile creep on his face as Nora ate. Some people might think that it was uncouth how she ate, but Ren knew how many hungry nights the two of them had had growing up. She deserved to eat when she got the chance. Wordlessly, he held up his kebab for Nora to eat from.
This wasn’t Nora’s first rodeo. She and Ren had shared food before--just like this, actually. He’d offer, and she’d just bite. Much like a caveman or a dog or cat--no dainty utensils or use of fingers. Just a big bite, and another moan of pleasure. Then she offered him the plate of fries. Not exactly the kind of thing one could feed another. At least, not unless they were finger-licking intimate.
Ren really hadn’t expected Nora to use any restraint, but he still gave a resigned sigh when it seemed like half of his kebab disappeared into her mouth. He wouldn’t have it any other way though. The day Nora started taking dainty little bites was the day he started getting worried. He used her fork to spear a couple of the loaded fries, and took a bite, giving a small, pleased smile.
The food was so good. Nora took the thing back after Ren got his serving, and started in again. Where did the girl put all the food? She could eat. But she was trying to slow herself down and really enjoy this. They didn’t always get to go out for things like this, so it was a decadence that she wanted to savor.
She forced herself to pause so she could turn and smile at Ren. “I love this.”
Ren would have reached for one of Nora’s hands, but they both seemed to be occupied with her fries for the moment, so instead he laid his hand on her knee and gave a gentle squeeze. “Me too,” he said.
Nora leaned her head over onto Ren’s shoulder. She could eat sideways if it meant being close to him. Besides, her food was almost gone, anyway.
“Where should we go next? Ice cream??”
Ice cream had been exactly what Ren had been thinking for dessert, in no small part because he knew exactly which vendor he’d wanted to try, sure that Nora would enjoy it. He finished the rest of his kebab, and once Nora had finished her fries, he took her hand and led her over to Sweet Kloud, an ice cream food vendor that seemed to specialize in ice cream all the colours of the rainbow.
Nora wasn’t sure what ice cream she wanted, so she turned to Ren. “I can’t decide! Help me decide? Should we get two small ones so we can get two different flavors and get to sample more, or should we just get one big one and we can share it?” She really would share. Nora could eat, but she also wanted to make sure Ren got his fair share. --Most of the time, anyway. She was feeling fairly Ren-centric after cuddling with her head on his shoulder, so she probably wasn’t going to lose track and eat the whole thing herself.
A slight frown crossed Ren’s face. He wasn’t a big fan of sharing food, at least food that was all one big piece and couldn’t be broken up into smaller pieces. It just seemed unsanitary, even with Nora, who he would gladly share nearly everything with. He was also aware that this, today, had almost been like a date, and so maybe Nora was expecting something date-like, such as sharing ice cream.
In the end though, he couldn’t do it. “I think we should each get our own,” he said after a moment.
“Okay!” Nora was looking at the flavors listed on the side of the food truck. She wasn’t expecting anything, really, she just wanted to try all the different flavors. But if she really wanted to try a ton of different flavors of ice cream, she could go to Baskin Robbins and ask for samples. Today was about hanging out with Ren and enjoying the food truck.
“I think I’ll go with Strawberry cheesecake.” She said, nodding. “Strawberry cheesecake it is!”
Ren looked at the flavour menu for a couple of moments, tapping his finger against his cheek thoughtfully. “I think I’ll get the matcha ice cream,” he said after a moment. Sure, it was his usual, but this did look different, swirled and colourful and promising to be a new experience.
“Why am I not surprised?” Nora said affectionately, giving him a bright smile. Then again, she often went for Strawberry flavors herself when they could afford it, so it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise on her end, either. She stepped forward into the line. “I got a whole mess of new followers. My channel is growing like crazy! I’m thinking about starting up a secondary channel for other things, too!”
“That’s really great, Nora,” Ren said, giving her a small smile. “What would your second channel be on?”
“Well my first one is mostly about food and games… though I’m thinking about separating those. And I want to do one on local places to visit for free--places to hike and beaches that a person can go to without having to pay anything, you know?” Nora stepped forward in the line and ordered her ice cream.
Ren ordered his own ice cream, paid for them both, and went to stand to the side to wait for them. “I think that’s a great idea,” Ren said, smiling. He and Nora had had to learn how to take advantage of all things free in their time on the streets; as far as he was concerned, there was no one better to do such a channel than Nora. “I’m proud of you.”
Nora moved with him to the pick-up counter, and leaned against it, facing away from the truck. Her eyes moved around the people nearby. They were all buying food and eating food, talking and laughing with their friends and loved ones. And Ren and Nora were part of them.
She gave him a warm, happy smile. “Thank you! I’m excited!”
