Sun had taken to going out a lot more recently. She wasn’t sure if it was the new found confidence from the network and the hidden excitement of possibly running into someone she had talked to online. She found it was much easier to talk to people when you didn’t have to do it face to face. Maybe it was a good middle ground as she felt like she was being more social. And why not? The more time that passed, the more Sun began to feel like she was truly safe. Even her tracker in the Korean news didn’t flag anything.
She had been stopping for some coffee when a familiar face made her stop in her tracks. It was Nomi! She didn’t stalk her like she did with Lito the other day, but crossed the street, even giving the woman a small wave.
“Nomi!” She paused, realizing that she might not have started dreaming, much like what she felt with Kala. She waited for her response, different stories coming up for why she might have stopped her.
Samus was off duty, but even when she was on duty she wore the same kind of clothing. Comfortable jeans, a button up shirt and a black duster that fell down to her knees. Lately, though, she’d started feeling naked without her armor and her Zero Suit.
So she wore her Zero Suit under her street clothes. It just meant she had to wear long sleeves and not unbutton the top two like she preferred. Despite the heat, her suit kept her cool.
Someone called out, but she ignored it at first until she realized the woman was approaching her. “I’m sorry? I think you have me mistaken for someone else.”
While Sun had been worried she hadn’t been dreaming, she certainly would have known her own name! She frowned, tilting her head to the side. It was definitely Nomi, but she didn’t seem to know it. Was that a dream type thing?
“I’m sorry,” she said, a bit slowly. “You look just like a friend of mine!” She hesitated. “I’m Sung.” Better to give her alias, just in case.
“Sung,” Samus repeated, and nodded her head. She gave Sun a soft smile. “I’m Samus Aran. So you’re a little mistaken about who I am.”
Samus...what was going on? Sun couldn’t help but frown followed by a shake of her head. “I’m so sorry,” she said again, studying this woman’s features. “I’ve never met anyone who looks so much like another person.” She paused. Nomi didn’t have a twin, did she? “Do you have a twin?” she asked out loud.
“If I do, we were separated at birth.” Now this was puzzling. Sung seemed so insistent that she knew someone who looked like her. “Are you two close?”
That was an interesting question. Sun thought about it, finally just shrugging her shoulders. “I think we are. I only dreamt of her once, but it seemed like we were very close.” She glanced at Samus, wondering if she dreamt too. “Do you...know what I’m talking about?” It seemed a common enough occurrence, but she knew here were still people who weren’t on the network.
“Oh.” Samus frowned, tilting her head as she peered down at Sun. Sun was tall for a woman, though Samus was taller than most people she knew. “That might explain it. Do you… dream of space?”
Sun shook her head. She had certainly been all around the world, but she didn’t think she had actually gone beyond that. “Is that what you dream of?” Sun couldn’t help but be a bit disappointed that this wasn’t Nomi, but she didn’t wish to offend the person in front of her.
“It is,” Samus said, unknowing that she was disappointing this woman. “I’m a bounty hunter, I hunt pirates. Space pirates.”
Well, that was certainly different than Nomi’s technological advice. “Bounty hunter of...space pirates?” It was a bit hard for Sun to wrap her head about that one. Although there seemed to be very strange dreams on the network, so anything seemed possible. Literally.
“What do space pirates do?”
“Attack innocent colonies,” Samus said with a far too personal amount of venom. “Kill people. Seek power and fortune at the expense of innocents. Just like real pirates.”
Sun was surprised by her response, but when she thought about it, it made sense. What else would people like that do? She was guessing from Samus’ rather passionate description that she had been on the receiving end of such attacks. Sun wasn’t sure if she could actually picture something like that, but it always came back to something you would see from a Saturday morning cartoon. She didn’t want to take this woman’s dreams lightly however and managed to keep a straight face about it.
“I can see why you would want to catch them,” she said. She hesitated for a moment, before going further. “Do you have your own ship?”
For Sun’s sake, Samus decided not to included that most space pirates in her dreams were from a race of insectoids that resembled humanoid preying mantises.
“I do in my Dreams. It’s not too big. It has a brig and I could travel with one other person without crowding and a third if we were all a little friendly.”
“Sounds cozy.” Sun smiled, trying to imagine what it was like to live in space and think nothing of it. Her own dreams seemed strange, but she couldn’t fathom something so fantastical happening. She realized that it was a bit strange to just be standing in the middle of a sidewalk, speaking with a complete stranger she had mistaken for someone else. She gave her a slight bow. “I apologize for my intrusion on your day.”
“It’s alright.” Samus almost reached out to comfort her, then stopped herself and gave her an awkward bow in return. “I’m not mad or anything.”
Sun smiled, happy that if a mistake were to be made, it was with someone like Samus. She hadn’t had great interactions with strangers in this area, but this was alright. “It was nice to meet you Samus. I hope we run into each other again. And that I don’t continue to think you are Nomi."
