Where: Local coffee shop
Rating: Low
Status: Complete!
It had been a long night of surveillance for Veronica Mars. And of course it was nothing exciting. Just the usual waiting to get a photo of a cheating spouse in a compromising position. She hadn’t been able to capture it until they were saying goodbye in the morning. But she had gotten it. Job done.
Now she was in need of coffee before she headed back to the office. A lot of coffee. Walking into her favorite coffee shop Veronica ordered a large iced vanilla latte with an extra shot of espresso and one of those breakfast sandwiches because yum.
She made her way over to the side to wait for her order, only it was unusually crowded this morning. The tiny blonde was having a bit of trouble getting by. “Excuse me, sorry,” she said almost on a loop as she pushed past customers until she found a spot near the counter. “God I need that coffee,” she muttered to herself.
If there was one thing Sun made a habit of, it was visiting all the local coffee shop’s to try and find the best one. With her trying to stay as under the radar as must as possible, she typically didn’t go out very often. But coffee was something that could lure her out of the darkest hole.
Since she usually kept to herself, she usually tucked herself into a corner, but began to notice that other people rarely paid attention to others. Whether on their phone or talking to the person they were with, Sun never really worried about others observing her. That sat fine with her as it gave her the ability to do the observations. She saw the tiny blonde make her way over to her, but wasn’t sure if she was talking to herself or to her. It had been awhile since she had had any kind of contact or communication with people, so she allowed herself to answer.
“We all do. It’s why we’re here.”
“Fair point,” Veronica replied with a smirk. Granted she didn’t think the rest of the customers had spent the entire night on a stake out, but she left that to herself. She didn’t exactly go around announcing what she did for a living. It tended to make some people uneasy.
“I’m not sure how people survived before coffee was invented,” she added. “They probably got more sleep.” Which Veronica certainly wouldn’t be opposed to. At least Liam was old enough to sleep through the night. Now it was just her job that kept her awake at all hours.
“Perhaps they drank tea,” she said, wondering if that was indeed true. “There are some that are as strong as coffee.” While she was a fan of most teas, she found there was nothing that could beat the taste of coffee. It was like trying to replace cigarettes with nicotine patches. They did the job, but it just wasn’t the same.
“And before tea?” Because yes, Sung had a point. Tea had been around a lot longer than coffee. But it hadn’t always been around. There was a point in time before people were caffeine free. “Whatever they did, I’m just glad it’s around now.”
Sun thought about it for a moment, realizing how true that was. She had just always assumed that tea was around forever, but there must have been a time before. “Yes, I guess you’re right” she said, actually looking at the petite girl standing next to her. “Before caffeine there wasn’t much to do or need for it. ” Her opinion certainly sounded like a statement, but it made sense to her. “The best products come from demand.” She gave Veronica a knowing look.
“They didn’t know what they were missing,” Veronica agreed with a smirk. Or perhaps it was Veronica who didn’t know what she was missing. Living a life where caffeine wasn’t needed. But that was just getting too existential for a conversation with a woman she didn’t even know. “I’m Veronica, by the way.”
Sun would have been surprised at her introduction if she had not felt a kind of connection with her already. Not quite like Lito or Will, but this was certainly one of the longest conversations she had had with a complete stranger. That had to mean something. “I am Sung Cho,” she said, using her alias. She held her hand out for Veronica to shake. “It’s a pleasure Veronica.” She gave her the closest thing she had to a smile, bowing a bit as well.
“Do you come to this particular coffee shop very often?”
“Nice to meet you Sung,” Veronica replied with as much of a smile as Veronica gave. “I do. It’s close to my office.” Not to mention it had some pretty damn good coffee. Veronica preferred local places to chains like Starbucks. “If you do, than I’m surprised I haven’t seen you before.”
Sun shook her head. “No, I don’t work around here either. I’ve been trying to find the best spot for a cup of coffee. It’s amazing how many places claim to have the best cup.” She smiled, sure Veronica knew what that search was like. From what she could tell of the American culture, they were obsessed with coffee. She rather enjoyed it herself, although she wouldn’t count her like for it as an obsession.
“What do you do for work?”
“It does take some time to find the right one,” Veronica agreed. “If you have good taste,” she added with a smirk. Some people were perfectly happy with settling with the chain stuff. Which Veronica had to admit, she had done herself on occasion when there was no other place close enough. But it wasn’t an everyday occurance.
“I’m a P.I.” Veronica replied. It was hardly as glamorous as it sounded, or as the movies made it out to be.
Veronica’s smirk was met with her own, Sung’s ordering being called out as she went to retrieve it. Instead of leaving with her commodity, she instead returned to the young woman. She could at least wait and keep her company while they waited for Veronica’s order to be called.
“A P.I.?” she repeated, coming back to the conversation. “Sounds very cool. Do you work for a company?”
Veronica was slightly surprised when Sung came back, but also glad. She didn’t usually do the whole small talk thing, but Veronica was actually enjoying this conversation. “Nope. I run my own business,” Veronica replied. And she had to admit she loved being her own boss. Taking the cases she wanted. Which granted was usually any case that came her way. But still. “What about you? What do you do?”
Sun gave her an impressed look. She had seen first hand the sort of behavior women got in the work place and she could understand the want to work for yourself. She started to see Veronica in a whole different light, respecting someone who could start and handle their own business.
“I am over here to look into opening a new branch of financial analysis for my family in Korea. It looks like negotiations are going well and if they do, I will stay here to oversee the smooth transfers.” It was an easy enough lie to tell as it could possibly be something she could have done if she had been with the family business still. “Very boring, but it also means I can come and discover new coffee shops like this.”
“Well, here’s hoping it keeps going well.” Veronica certainly wouldn’t mind seeing Sung again. Just then she heard the barista call her name. “Enjoy your coffee,” Veronica said. “See you around.” Probably in this very coffee shop. If Sung liked it enough to come back. And really, who wouldn’t? But with that said she walked off to retrieve her own drink.
