With all his dreams Klaus finally realized that some of what Elijah said rang true. Though he would never admit that to his brother, or anyone for that matter. But it was true, he couldn’t keep shutting his family out. Freya was back home where she belonged. And while the argument with Elijah was nowhere near the same level as his fight with Freya, it was time to put it behind them and move on.
Which was precisely why Klaus was on Elijah’s doorstep at the moment. He knocked in the door a few times and when he got no answer he called out to his brother. “Come on, Elijah. Open up. I know you’re home.”
Still nothing.
He knocked again. Waited. And that was enough. Klaus didn’t have Elijah’s patience. He wasn’t going to wait out here all day. Nor would he be ignored. He kicked down the door and walked into his brother’s home.
“Elijah!” He called out. “I did allow you into my home. You could do the same.” He made his way through Elijah’s home, growing angrier by the second. That was until he reached the bedroom and saw his brother daggered in the bed.
Well that explained the not answering. In the blink of an eye he was at his brother’s side, yanking the dagger from his chest.
It took several long minutes before the power of the dagger released Elijah from it’s hold. His gray skin faded back to a normal color, eyes shooting open and regarding the brother standing over him, dagger in hand.
“...Niklaus.” Perhaps he should thank his brother for going to the pain of removing the dagger but at the same time it was Niklaus himself who had so deftly imbedded it into Elijah’s chest. At least in their dream world. And mere moments after he had sworn to Hayley that he would always be there to protect her, too.
“I take it this means our disagreement is water under the proverbial bridge?” At least their disagreement over Freya. The dream world was another matter entirely.
Klaus didn’t even bother to answer Elijah’s question. “Why exactly do you have a dagger in your chest?” Klaus asked already dreading the answer. There was a good chance this came from dreams. Actually it was the only scenario. Unless one of their siblings received a dagger and decided to use it on Elijah. If the dagger did indeed come from dreams like Klaus already suspected, it was probably by his hand.
A pause Elijah giving him something of a look. After all, Niklaus was likely quite aware of who had placed the dagger in his chest. But, then again, this was at least the third time it had happened in the dream world.
“I dreamt of Mystic Falls,” he advised. “And our other lives. And then a trip to New Orleans. There was a young werewolf carrying your child. I promised to protect her and you daggered me mere moments later.”
“There was a war,” Klaus automatically defended himself. “You were the one weakness Marcel could exploit. I couldn’t let that happen.” Back then he had been determined to win his city back. With everything he had dreamed since, that all seemed so ridiculous. But he wasn’t about to let Elijah know that.
And the fact that he had been daggered so soon after clearly winning Hayley’s preference made no difference of course. Elijah, though, was intelligent enough not to intimate such to his brother. “So you used me as collateral in a war to win back the city we fled.”
“If I didn’t, Marcel would have,” Klaus shot back. “I was protecting you.” And himself but that wasn’t the point.
“I can protect myself,” Elijah returned. “And without being daggered and handed over to the very man from whom you were attempting to wrest control of the city.” He sighed softly, pushing himself up to a sitting position finally.
“I do hope that your plan came to some fruition.” If nothing had come of it except an additional point of contention between the two brothers that would be very disappointing indeed.
“It all worked out just fine,” Klaus replied. Sure there were a few bumps along the way. But Elijah ended up undaggered eventually. “Now are you going to thank me for removing the dagger here?” After all it wasn’t like he actually daggered his brother.
“Yes, thank you, Brother.” He had undaggered him, after all. “I’m glad you decided to come see me today of all days.”
That was more like it. “Perhaps you should try living with a sibling,” Klaus suggested. Chances were this wouldn’t be the first time Elijah woke up with some sort of injury.
“Would you really wish to have two siblings living with you?” Elijah questioned, only half teasing. Something told him it wouldn’t bode well for anyone.
Well it seemed to work well enough in the dreams. Minus all the fights. But that wasn’t what Klaus meant. “I was referring to Finn,” he replied with a small smirk. Of course he was somewhat worried about Elijah being alone. But for the most part he wasn’t serious in his suggestion. Both brothers had been on their own too long.
“Yes, Finn would make a marvelous housemate for you,” Elijah returned, completely straight-faced. “Undoubtedly he and Freya would team up to completely hamper your lifestyle.”
Klaus merely smirked at Elijah’s reply. “Precisely why you and Finn would make such good housemates. You’re both quite prim and proper.”
“I rather prefer having my own space,” Elijah countered, though he wasn’t really rising to the bait. It was more matter-of-factly said. “But you are already used to having housemates. I’m sure one more wouldn’t make a difference”
“Don’t be ridiculous, Brother,” Klaus replied clearly enjoying the joke. “I wouldn’t want you to be lonely.”
“Nonsense.” As though Elijah could be anything but content on his own. He rather enjoyed a solitary existence sometimes. “No, I am afraid it is you who would be lost without Freya and Finn to help guide you.”
“You got that backwards, brother,” Klaus replied still grinning. “Freya and Finn would be lost without me. And you would be too for that matter.”
Elijah new better than to counter that assertion. Klaus was voliable under the best of circumstances and he had already seemed in something of a mood when they’d disagreed on the necessity of staking one’s sibling.
“Regardless, I believe Finn and I are both quite content with the current living arrangements, Brother. And, grateful though I am that you un daggered me, may I ask what brought you to my door?”
“I figured we could go for a drink,” Klaus replied not missing a beat. “It’s been awhile.” He left it at that. No need to get into why it had been awhile. Both he and Elijah knew. And Klaus would rather not revisit that topic.
“I suppose we could,” Elijah answered. “If you’ll allow me a few moments to change out of a now ruined suit.”
Klaus fought back the urge to ask why exactly his brother was sleeping in a suit. “If I must.”
It certainly wasn’t anything common for Elijah. But he’d been tired and had sat down, intending to change a moment later until heavy eyelids just wouldn’t open again. “You must,” Elijah answered without hesitation, moving for his closet.
“It will only be a moment, Niklaus. And then we can go.”
