Who: Martha Jones & Rose Tyler What: Catching Up When: Backdated: Early August Where: Baxter’s Rating: Low Status: Complete!
It had been a long time since Rose had seen Martha and she felt a bit guilty about it. She had run into so many other people from the network here and there that she felt she wasn’t making time for the friends she had BEFORE then. So she sent her friend a quick text, inviting her to Baxter’s in the morning. She was working that day, but she’d spend some time with her before she had to clock. Girls had to catch up and all that!
The opener at Baxter seemed surprise to see Rose, but she explained she was meeting up with someone before her shift started. She ordered her usual, some strong tea with some of their special sparkly milk and a raspberry scone. She could eat a dozen of them, but she settled for two. Maybe Martha would join her in eating it...that is if she got there before she could tuck in to it!
She chose a seat by the window so Martha could see her right away, but her attention was on her phone, scrolling through the various network posts to see if anyone had any new or exciting dreams to share.
It had definitely been awhile since Martha had seen Rose so when the other Companion had texted her, Martha had made time in her schedule to meet up with her. It helped that Martha was the head of the Medical Unit at the Agency so she could make her own hours sometimes and today she was choosing to do just that.
Reaching Baxter’s, she spotted Rose in the booth and gave her a smile and wave in greeting before she went and ordered herself a sparkling latte and pastry. Order in hand, she headed over to the booth, “Hey, how’s it going?”
Rose stood up to greet her friend, wrapping her up in a hug. Finally being able to see her and hang out, she felt guilty for not spending more time with her. “Hey,” she said, pulling back and grinning, taking her seat again. “So far, so good. Nothing too crazy going on.” She knocked on the table. “Knock on wood. What about you? What have you been up to?”
Martha returned the hug then sat down in the seat across from her friend, “That’s good to hear. No craziness is always good.” She too knocked, lightly, on the table then took a sip of her latte before answering, “I’ve been a little busy actually. We’re working on setting up clinics, primarily for dreamers.” She had been working with Jemma and Natasha on the project and it was coming along rather well and Martha couldn’t wait for it to be finished.
“Really?” Rose sat up, interested to hear more. “Martha, that’s great! With the most recent attack, I’ve been wondering how people are getting things back into order. Insurance companies must be making a killing over here.” She took a sip of her coffee and gave her friend a knowing look over the edge. “How many are you aiming for? And what areas?”
Martha nodded, smiling, “Yup. We figure it’ll be easier then for anyone who wakes up with dream wounds or aliments.” Martha had seen a few dreamer when she’d still worked at the hospital and it had made it much easier for them to explain what had happened, “It also means less people coming to the Agency to be seen.” She took another sip of her latte, “We don’t have a set number just yet.”
“What’s the Agency?” Rose had seen that name float around online, but had never been interested in it before. But if they had any deal with the dreams, trying to reach out to help those when weird things started to happen...well, she was all for it.
Martha hadn’t really been thinking when she’d mentioned the Agency, but it wasn’t as if it was really all that hush hush. She was pretty sure that most dreamers had heard about it in some capacity. “It’s kind of like Torchwood or U.N.I.T.” She figured those were the best examples from their dreams that she could give to explain the Agency. “Have you dreamt of either of those yet?”
Rose shook her head. “What’s that? Some sorta secret agent type situation?” Half of her was joking, but part of her wouldn’t be surprised if that was actually the situation. There were weird things that happened around here, someone had to clean up the mess right? Who else could do the cover up?
“Basically.” Honestly, Martha didn’t see a reason why the Agency needed to be kept a secret from other Dreamers. They were already having crazy dreams and experiencing things that other people didn’t, so why did the Agency need to be kept a secret? “Top secret organizations that aren’t really as top secret as they like to think they are.”
Rose couldn’t help but giggle, grinning at her friend. “Well, they try to be. Plus, it sounds really cool! Martha Jones, secret agent!” She wiggled her eyebrows as she took a sip of her tea. “Too bad you can’t have a business card or something spouting that. Be kinda cool!” She knew she was missing the point of being “secret”, but she’d wanna brag about it!
“So do you guys know why this stuff is really happening?”
“I’ll probably have business cards for the clinic, but yeah, can’t have any for the top secret organization,” Martha smirked and took a sip of her drink before shaking her head, “No, I don’t think anyone really knows exactly what causes any of this stuff. There are theories of course, but nothing for sure.” Martha had many theories and she was pretty sure the ones about the forum at least causing the dreams was true, but still no one knew why.
Rose shook her head. “Man, that’s gotta be frustrating! I mean, I know I’m curious about it! And if your whole point is to try and stop these things, I’m sure you guys have been looking into it.” She shrugged, not wanting to sound like she was being overly critical of Martha’s newer appointment. “Still, seems pretty cool! You’ll be safe though, right?” A silly question to ask, but one that she felt she had to for her friend.
Martha understood exactly what Rose was getting at and didn’t feel like she was getting critical at all, “Don’t worry. I’m just as safe as my travels with The Doctor.” She smirked knowingly, figuring that Rose would understand what she was getting at considering the degree of safety and danger one tended to be in while traveling with him. “But thanks for the concern.”
