Jace might not have had the experience in fighting demons that the him he’d seen in that Dream had but he had experience fighting and there was no way he was going to just sit back and watch where he lived get overrun by them. He had put on as much protective gear as he could find around his apartment before leaving, just looking for people that he could protect. Or things that he could punch - whichever he came across first. He wasn’t feeling particularly picky right now. But maybe he should have been if the group of demons he first came across was any indication. He was able to get rid of them - maybe not as neatly as he’d have liked but he got rid of them - but it wasn’t without taking some hits himself. A nasty gash to the side of his head the worst of them, knocking him to the ground for a moment as the fight ended but he heard a scream around the corner and he couldn’t just ignore it.
He pushed himself up and started heading in the direction of the scream, ignoring the pain he felt as he went. This wasn’t a competition or even just a sparring match for practice or training - this was real.

Alec had his own concerns from when the demons first began to appear. However, he was more than capable of handling himself and he knew that Magnus, Simon, and Izzy were not in need of assistance. Jace, on the other hand, hadn’t to Alec’s knowledge gotten any of his Shadowhunter abilities and he thought it best to make sure that his cousin was staying out of trouble.
Completely decked out in his Shadowhunter gear, armed with a bow, seraph blade and his stele, he began to make his way towards Jace’s apartment. He could only hope that his cousin wasn’t stupid enough to try and fight on his own. Sure, the guy had some training but not with demons, nor did he have the ability to use runes, yet. Still, getting to Jace was its own adventure since Alec was helping whoever he could along the way.

Jace turned the corner, surprised when he saw a familiar figure ahead of him. What was Alec doing standing on the street near his place with a bow? “Alec!” He called, hurrying towards him. As fast as he could with his aching side anyway. “What are you doing here cuz? And why do you have a bow?” He asked, dodging as one of the demons launched itself at him.
***
Alec turned when he heard his name called out and was angry and surprised by what he saw. “I came to check on you, you idiot,” he growled as he saw Jace’s wounds. “Why are you out here?!” He ignored the question about his bow and began to shove Jace towards the guy’s place. “We need to get back to your place and check out how bad your wounds are. You aren’t gonna be any good to anyone if you are injured.” He began to walk alongside Jace, on his guard.

“I’m out here because I wanted to help people! What’s the point of all the training I’ve done if I don’t use it when given a chance,” Jace said, wincing a little as Alec shoved him, his muscles around his ribs screaming at him. “It’s bruised ribs. I’ve felt it before. I’ll be fine.” He insisted, trying to ignore the burn he was feeling in his side as he looked around them.
***
“You’re no good to any in this condition,” Alec pointed out before lightly jabbing Jace in the ribs. He knew it would hurt but he was trying to prove a point. “You’re training isn’t for fighting demons, so it’s time we get you back to your place.” Without being shocked, he quickly drew his bow and launched two arrows that landed into the skulls of a pair of demons that had rounded the corner. “If I have to knock your ass out and carry you back, I will but then you’d be more of a burden.”
***
Jace let out a shout when Alec jabbed him in the ribs. “Asshole.” He hissed out, eyes narrowing as he looked at his cousin. “You still haven’t told me what you’re doing with a bow.” He said, watching with more curiosity than anything else as his cousin made those shots. “I was doing alright.” Jace insisted, not willing to admit that he wasn’t ready for this.
***
“No, proving my point that you can’t exactly take a hit and that you won’t be much use to anyone, if you do take a hard hit.” Alec wasn’t going to let his cousin do anything else that put him in harm’s way. “As for the bow, clearly I know how to use it and am much better equipped for this kind of stuff than you are. Now, get walking back to your place. I told Izzy and Magnus that I’d let them know when we were safe.” As he headed towards his cousin’s place, he notched another arrow, just in case.
***
“Doubt demons or whatever these things are will be targeting my ribs like you did,” Jace grumbled at him. He knew Alec was right that he couldn’t but he hated admitting that. “Where did you learn how to use a bow? When did you learn to use a bow?” He asked, eyes watching around him as he searched for his keys in his pocket. “...Do you have your key to my place? I can’t find mine.” He must have dropped it someplace. Probably when he got involved in the fight with that first group of demons.
***
Alec shook his head in disbelief at his cousin. “You’re lucky that I like to be prepared; besides, do you think that I’d wait outside your apartment, until you answered the door, in this mess?” he questioned. “Yes, I have my key and I learned to use a bow about the time I moved around here.” That wasn’t exactly a lie; hell, it was a rather truthful answer. “Kinda had a knack for it, now let’s get moving.”
***
Jace rolled his eyes at that question. “It’s not like I knew you were going to be heading this way. Mind reading is not one of my impressive skills. Hard to believe I know.” He said as they drew near his building. “Seems kind of weird you never mentioned it before now. But I’m glad you did.” He said, something causing him to pause. Almost like he’d heard something coming towards them and then there it was - another demon in front of them.
***
“But you do have a phone. It may not be mind reading but it’s still good for communicating...or did you lose that too?” Alec stayed on his guard. He considered giving Jace his seraph blade but figured it was best in his own possession. “Like learning to use a bow warrants some kind of announcement. Should I have sent you a message when I learned to pole dance too?” His eyes narrowed at the demon before he quickly loosed an arrow. “Please, hang back,” he instructed before he let another arrow fly.
***
“One time. I lose my phone one time and you never let me live it down.” Jace responded. There was something about his cousin being there that made him relax and be able to joke a little bit even as he reached up one hand to touch his head. It was tender but there wasn’t any blood when he pulled his fingers away. That was good. He’d take that win right now. “Depends - would I have been able to start learning how to pole dance when we were back in New York?” He asked, following instructions (for once in his life) and stepping back behind Alec so that he wasn’t in the way.
He felt something in him almost itching to launch into the fight, not let his cousin do this on his own but he was shoving that impulse down.
***
“I started pole dancing here but I did find a place to take lessons and teach while in New York...so, maybe…but my main concern was my parents divorcing.” Alec gave a casual shrug as he dispatched the demon with some well aimed arrows. “You just gonna stand there or are we gonna keep moving to your place?”
***
“Pretty sure that was what all of us were concerned with back in New York. Especially trying to keep it from getting to Max too much.” Jace muttered, watching as the demons seemed to dissolve on the sidewalk. He’d do anything to protect his youngest cousin and he was sure that Alec knew that. “Yeah. Just don’t expect me to run. I’m not going to hurt my ribs more for your amusement.” He growled, starting to lead the way to his apartment. Hurting his ribs in a fight he’d do but not running. He wasn’t that into pain.
He was hissing though and he knew Alec probably heard it as they moved towards his apartment building, his pace picking up slightly when he saw the door and opened it. “I don’t think I can do the stairs up to my place right now.” He admitted.
***
Alec gave a short sigh at the mention of his brother. Jace didn’t know about what happened in the dreams and he knew it was only a matter of time before his cousin had that terrible dream. “About time that you admit that you aren’t capable. I was getting ready to punch you in the ribs again but it seems like you’re finally starting to think clearly about all this.” Alec didn’t plan to make Jace run, as it would draw attention to them but if they were spotted by a mob, running was the only option.
“I’m not carrying you up to your apartment. There is an elevator here, right?” Sure, Alec could use a rune to help but if he was carrying Jace, he was quite susceptible to attack. “Once we get into your place, you go lay down and I’ll make sure the rest of your place is clear.” He made sure Jace entered first.
***
“You’re asking for it.” Jace muttered as he led him inside the apartment, trusting Alec to lock the door as he went and laid on the couch, not wanting to head all the way to his room when the couch was so close.
