Amycus had been trying to think of the best way to do this for months now. Since shortly after Regulus had moved into the house actually. Nothing ever seemed right, though, until finally he’d realized that the best way was to get the girls involved. And what better way than to get one of them to take Regulus to box for him. Laurel would have been the obvious choice - she’d adored Regulus from the minute he’d introduced the girls to his boyfriend but Madison was the one who’d taken longer to warm up. To let Regulus into her heart. So it would mean more to have her be his messenger. Would show that she was absolutely okay with this change to their little family.
He called her over to him from the dining room table, kneeling down and making sure that Regulus was busy coloring with Laurel to pull the box out of his pocket and hand it to her. “Madison I need you to do me a favor, princess. Take this over to Regulus and tell him that I said it means whatever he wants it to. Can you do that for me?” He asked quietly. Madison cracked open the little box he’d handed her and smiled as she nodded her head before running over to Regulus and trying to climb into his lap with it cradled in her hands.
“Daddy wanted me to bring you this and said to tell you that it means whatever you want it to.” She said, the words tumbling out of her rapidfire as she held the box out to him.

Regulus smiled at Madison as she ran over to him and helped her up into his lap. He figured she just wanted to join them in coloring, and he always loved it when she wanted to come join them in any activities. Madison took much longer to accept him as part of the family, and took so much longer in general to be comfortable with people. He was about to ask her if she wanted to choose the next picture to color when suddenly she was holding out a tiny box for him. Blue eyes widened when he saw it, recognizing it as a jewelry box. He gently took it out of her hands and opened it. A ring, he got him a ring.
He kissed the top of Madison’s head before taking the ring out. How Amycus even managed to guess what size ring would fit him, Reg hadn’t the slightest clue. He looked over to where his boyfriend was standing before nodding, eyes still wide. “Yes. Please yes.”
***
Amycus didn’t realize he’d been holding his breath waiting for the response until he heard Regulus say yes and it came out of him in a rush, causing him to lean on the counter by the sink as a relieved smile spread over his face. “I was really hoping you’d say that. I asked your friend Jess to help with the ring size so hopefully it fits. She was trying to guess it based off your old class ring. From the other side of the country.”
***
Reg hugged Maddison before reaching out for Amycus. Needing him closer. Just... needing to touch him. He laughed as the other man told him how he got the size right. “...Sneaky. You both are so sneaky. Come here and put this on me properly, please?” he asked Amycus.
***
Amycus turned off the faucet and made his way over to his family, bending down to kiss Regulus sweetly before dropping a kiss on Madison’s head. “Thank you Princess,” he whispered to her. He gave Laurel a smile and winked at her, causing the little girl to collapse into giggles. “And you too for keeping it a secret when you saw me putting the box in my desk drawer while chasing the dogs.” He took the ring from Regulus, sliding it onto his finger. “If it doesn’t fit right, you don’t like it...we can go get you another one.”
***
Regulus shook his head quickly at Amycus’s suggestion of getting another one. “Unless it needs to be fitted, it’s never coming off of my finger. I love it. I love you.” he whispered. He leaned forward to steal a quick kiss from Amycus and leaned his forehead against his. “It’s absolutely perfect, Love.” He turned to smile first at Madison and then at Laurel. “And you two, too. I love you girls so much… all three of you are so sneaky.” he laughed, correcting his earlier comment.
“Have you already told your parents? Or should we skype them and tell them?” he asked Amycus. He loved his boyf… fiance’s family. It was sad that they lived so far away, but at least they got to see each other through their computer screens often.
***
Amycus grinned into the kiss as he returned it, laughing out loud as Aslan came over and leaned against him, making a soft sound that Amycus always interpreted as him being happy. “Did we leave you out Aslan?” He asked, reaching down with his free hand to gently scratch at the large dog’s head and then started petting him. “I promise it wasn’t deliberate.”
He looked back at Regulus and shook his head slowly. “I haven’t told anyone. Except for Jess. And then I didn’t exactly tell her it was for an engagement ring. Just that it was for a ring. I was hoping we could tell everyone together. After you said yes.” And while he wouldn’t admit it a part of him was scared that Regulus would say no and that was a huge part of why he hadn’t said anything to anyone about what he was planning.
***
“Well, he is our kid, too. Can’t leave him out of this.” Regulus murmured as he smiled at the two of them. “...Maybe we can involve him and the girls in the wedding somehow?” He didn’t really want it to be anything big or showy, but he did want it to be something everyone who wanted to be part of it could.
“Then we can tell her together next time we skype. Although I’m sure she probably had a feeling about it, anyway.” Regulus stole another kiss before pulling back. “I can’t wait to tell everyone, but maybe we can wait until Monday? Just celebrate as a family right now?”
***
“But where would that leave Chip and Apollo?” Amycus asked him quietly, as Aslan leaned harder against him. “And we'll figure out a way to get everything we both want for our wedding. I just want something small.“
He grinned at him. “Can part of our celebrating be a weekend away at a resort? I already made the reservations for us - lots of activities for all of us.”
***
“We’ll… figure out something for them. And I just want something small, too. Just.. maybe the people that are most important to us?” Something big would be overwhelming. “Think your parents would be willing to fly in for it?”
Regulus nodded and leaned in to kiss Amycus again. “That sounds perfect to me. We can take the dogs and Apollo with us, too?”
****
“Just the people that are most important to us. And love...I think we’d have a harder time convincing them not to fly in for it. They love you.” He reassured him, kissing him back sweetly.
He laughed. “Well the resort is pet friendly. And I did pay for them. After promising them that our sweet, idiot kitten wasn’t going to destroy the curtains.”
***
Regulus smiled into the kiss, grateful for the reassurance. He knew his own parents coming was… not going to happen. Not that he would have wanted him there. But he really did like Am’s family. “Good, because I love them too. And they need to meet our other kids, too. The hairier ones.”
He laughed at that and shook his head. “You love that kitten and you know it. Thank you, for finding somewhere that we can bring them with us. I love you.”
***
“Oh God. Mum might try to steal Aslan to go home with her. And she already wants to use Shadowdancer for stud to one of her mares. I’m telling her no on that and hope you’ll back me up.” Amycus said, unable to quit grinning as he looked at him.
“I do love him. But he’s still an idiot. A lovable, adorable, sweet idiot who I swear would drown if not for Aslan looking out for him. I love you too. More than anything.” He whispered those last three words to him as he gave him another kiss and then slipped off to go finish up the dishes.
