Who: Clara and Rose
What: Investigating meteors and the like in the lead up to the Warcrafting: Part 2
When: July
Where: Around Orange County
Warnings: Low
Status: Log | Complete
Weird things were going down in Orange County. Okay. So that was basically a constant in Orange County. But there hadn’t just been one random meteor shower with the meteors made of nickel like Jim had mentioned earlier in the month. No, her TARDIS had picked up on radiation readings and that meant Clara wanted to go and investigate. Martha was busy with the Agency, her dad was trying to figure out a way to remove a dream related object out of someone, something which apparently had thwarted him for going on two months now, and well it might not be a proper hen night if only two of them, investigating the weird with Rose was a thing that happened fairly often.
So when the blonde had time, it was off to where most of her readings were coming from. Luckily there weren’t people there when the TARDIS materialized. Grabbing the sonic sunglasses, Clara headed out the door and scanned the area to see where most of the energy was coming from.
Lowering the glasses, she turned to Rose. “You seeing the green energy too?”
Anytime the TARDIS and Clara were involved, Rose was all up for the adventures of Orange County. She hadn’t known anything was happening, but eagerly agreed to accompany Clara to see what was going on. As they stepped out, she glanced around and could see the green masses without any aid.
“Yeah, what are they?” She took a step towards one, kneeling down next to it. “Are they...alive?”
The use of the sonic sunglasses had been to see in what direction they should head initially and once Rose verified she could see the energy, Clara debated removing them before deciding against it. They would prove useful in recording the data so she could send it along to Natasha. This had definitely gone beyond just proving Jim wrong and into something the Agency would want to investigate.
“Not sure. I mean….it’s energy but beyond that….I’m picking up on radiation from them though.”
Rose took a step back at what she had to say, glancing at her friend. “Like...strong radiation?” She glanced around at the other puddles of the green goo. “Should we even be around them?”
Clara was about to respond that of course it was fine but then remembered the fact that while radiation wouldn’t do anything to her, others weren’t in the state she was in where nothing would change and she’d just instantly heal (or a bit slower depending) from whatever happened because she was frozen between one heartbeat and the last.
“Let me check…” Tapping the side of the sunglasses, Clara got a more in depth reading. “Yeah, we should be fine. I mean I wouldn’t drink it or anything. But we’re not really going to be here long enough for any damage to take place.”
She didn’t know how long that would take but the readings showed it would certainly take much longer than what it would take for them to get more information for her to pass along to Natasha.
Even though Rose trusted Clara, she still felt a little uneasy as she stepped around the green globs. “So what are they? Waste?” It looked like a strange sort of swamp with these pools of green goo all over the place. “Are they alien?”
Wasn’t that part of the whole travelling with the Doctor though? Trust them but still be uneasy in these sorts of situations? No matter. Clara was a bit more preoccupied by what she was picking up to really be making such connections.
“Not sure. I mean...ever read The Neverending Story? These craters could be footsteps made by Rockeater….” It was what her mind jumped to. “As for the goo? No idea.” Leaning closer to said crater, Clara made sure to get the dimensions of the imprint, as well as more readings on the goo to send along to the Agency.
Rose glanced at Clara as if she had gone off the deep end, but really, anything was possible here. “You really think some sorta giant walked through here? Don’t ya think we would have seen him wanderin’ about?”
Clara was used to that look and paid it no mind. It came with the whole investigating the weird thing. As for the question, the former teacher simply shrugged.
“Not sure. I mean, we’re in Orange County, it’s entirely possible we wouldn’t.” Until it wanted to be seen as was often the way in these situations. “But these are definitely not made just from falling meteors.” That much she could be certain of.
“So let’s say it is a giant,” Rose followed behind Clara, her urgency over the matter not as high as her friend’s. She was along for the ride, eager to see new things and figure out what was going on. Whenever Clara reached out for an adventure, Rose always took her up on it. “Where does the green goo come into play? They have some kind of nasty foot fungus?” She made a face, sorry she had brought it up in the first place.
“Do you think we can take a sample? Maybe the TARDIS will know what it is?”
With how often things went wrong in Orange County? Weird things were good to look into. And it was clear to her this was more than weird hence her concern and desire to get information to the Agency.
Okay. If she were the Doctor, how would she respond to the question on where the goo came from. Because Clara herself had no idea what could possibly make that goo. Or the readings she was picking up from it.
“Could be? Whatever it is, it’s gross. But yeah. A sample would be good to take.”
Going into her bag, Clara pulled out an evidence vial of sorts in order to take said sample. Even if the TARDIS didn’t know what it was, the information would be sent along to the Agency as well. “You want the honor?”
Rose was about to refuse, her head already shaking before she considered. She wanted to do more adventures, more exploring like she did in her dreams with the Doctor. This was the perfect opportunity to be a bit more hands on and she took the vial from Clara’s hand. “I will actually, thank you!” She gave her a cheeky grin before turning back to the pool. “Long exposure, yeah? So it’ll be alright if I get a little bit on me?” Probably best to not even attempt that, but she wanted to make sure just in case.
She bent down next to the thing, wrinkling her nose. “It smells a bit dodgy.”
Clara noticed the shaking of the head and had been about to go get the sample herself when Rose changed her mind. That worked as well. Though she paused at the question. While she knew that being around it wouldn’t be bad so long as it wasn’t prolonged, she wasn’t sure about actual contact and wondered if she should be doing the sample getting after all given her whole...essentially dead thing. Too late now.
“Try not to, but yeah. Think science class. If you get some on you, we’ll just go inside the TARDIS and get it washed off and disinfected.”
Thank goodness for the TARDIS.
“So smells like it looks then.”
Rose tried to only breathe through her mouth as she delicately scooped some of the goop into the vial Clara had given her. “Alright, I think we’re alright,” she said, turning and handing it to her, only her index finger and thumb holding it. There seemed to be some drips on the other side and she moved her fingers so they were holding the lip of the bottle. “Careful, there’s something on that side,” she said, nodding towards it.
“Are we gonna see what the TARDIS says it is??”
Still not worried for her own wellbeing but knowing that there were certain appearances to keep up, Clara pulled out a napkin in order to hold the vial without any worry of contamination before she took the vial herself so that she could do just as Rose was asking.
“That’s the plan.”
Sample in hand, it was then into the TARDIS, Clara nodding to where Rose could wash her hands and make sure she had nothing on her from getting the sample.
After Rose washed up, she hurried over to where Clara was, glancing over her shoulder to see what was going on. She didn’t know the ends and outs of the TARDIS like Clara did, but she still had some knowledge of it? Even if this TARDIS wasn’t like the one she dreamt of.
“Anything familiar pop up? Any good news?”
The readings were definitely not all that familiar to Clara. So not of this planet. Which okay, that was probably a given. With the results finished and the like, Clara was getting it into a report to send to the secure network of the Agency when Rose came back.
“Nothing I recognize off the top of my head. Sending it to people who deal with this sort of thing though.”
“FBI? CIA? MI6?” She grinned, knowing that it wasn’t likely she was sending it to any of them. Maybe it was that agency Martha had been talking to her about. Whatever the case, at least there were people out there that could try and help with this situation.
“Something like that.” Because why be specific when you could be vague? Especially since while the Agency came up sometimes on the network depending on who was talking, it also wasn’t something that was just….openly discussed. She figured that even if she was just an unassigned asset for this sort of thing, maybe some secrecy was needed. That and it was just fun. “Either way, they may have a better idea.”
And if it was the likely precursor to more Orange County shenanigans.
