Caroline and Elena had been spending a lot fo time together lately. Not that they ever didn’t. But it was a little bit more so now that Tyler was like never around. Always cancelling plans on her. Caroline needed a distraction. Someone to turn to. Someone she could talk to about her frustrations. Because really what was the point of being with someone if they were never around? It wasn’t like Caroline needed attention 24/7. But seeing her boyfriend for more than like ten minutes a week would be nice.
“I finally talked to Tyler,” Caroline said as they walked into one of the shoe stores at the mall. Shopping was her therapy after all. Well along with hanging out with her friends.
Elena was glad that she could be there for Caroline. They had been friends for most of their lives and she would do whatever she could to support her friend.
“Oh?” Elena glanced over, instantly on alert. “What did he say?” Not that there was much Tyler could do where Klaus was concerned. The situation sucked no matter which way you looked at it.
“Not much,” Caroline replied sadly. “Just that he wasn’t happy about it all either.” Which she had to admit it was reassuring to hear. “I know there is nothing he can do about it. That it’s not his fault. But still I needed to get it off my chest. And I needed to hear that he wasn’t okay with it either.”
A nod, Elena moving closer as they continued walking. The arm closest to Caroline stretched out, winding around her shoulders.
“Of course he isn’t okay with it,” she answered. “He loves you. I just wish there was something I could do to help.” Tyler had been made hybrid with her blood but allegiances lay elsewhere unfortunately.
“You’re helping,” Caroline assured Elena. Sure she might not know how to break the sire bond. But Elena was keeping her company, keeping her from losing her mind. “You’re keeping me sane,” she only half joked.
“But enough about me,” Caroline said. “What’s been going on with you? When do your fall classes start?”
“It officially starts September 24,” Elena answered. “So I get a few weeks between the last summer session and the start of fall semester. I’m all registered and I’ve got my books so now it’s just a bit of a waiting game.”
There was a slight pause as she glanced back to her friend. “I’ve been dreaming again. Not as much as before, just a few months this time. I dreamed about Tyler being turned into a hybrid.”
“And Klaus compelled Stefan to turn off his humanity.” Of course Caroline had been focussed more on Tyler. He was her boyfriend after all. But she was well aware of the affect Stefan not having his humanity had on Elena.
Elena nodded. Yeah, Stefan had turned off his humanity. “He attacked me,” she advised. “I woke up in the hospital and the nurse was taking my blood for Klaus.” More blood than really should have been taken given how much blood she had already lost to the Ripper.
“And then Damon came to get me. He carried me out of the hospital and promised he wouldn’t leave me again.”
“I’m sure Klaus was responsible,” Caroline replied sounding a little bitter. Saying she wasn’t a fan of Klaus was an understatement. The asshole was going to let her die, not to mention the whole making her boyfriend murder people thing.
Remembering the dreams did to her suddenly made her worried about Elena. “Are you okay?” Caroline asked eyes focussed on her friends. “Did anything carry over?”
“He was,” Elena confirmed. “He put the timer on and compelled Stefan. Drink when the buzzer goes off and break my spine if I run.” She offered something of a smile to her friend, even if it was a small one. Stefan had loved her enough to resist,
“Stefan fought the compulsion. He was ready to stake himself instead of hurt me. That’s when Klaus compelled him to turn it all off.” She’d watched the warmth fade from his eyes.
Elena hesitated at the question, glancing around before she swept her hair to one side. Her neck was bruised, the puncture marks visible. That and a bruise on her arm where the blood had been drawn.
“Klaus was sure busy that night,” bitterness evident in Caroline’s tone once again. However, once she saw Elena’s neck her face softened. “Elena,” she frowned. She hated that the dreams could actually injure them. “I’m so sorry.” There was something Caroline could do though. At least for the physical part. She couldn’t really do much to help with the emotional crossover. “I can heal you… if you want.”
A shake of her head. “It looks worse than it is.” It was. tender, of course, but hardly painful enough to warrant healing. She let her hair fall back into place. “I’m sorry Tyler got caught up in all of it, though.” Even if Klaus was to blame, Elena still felt some burden of ownership. If he hadn’t been her friend, if she hadn’t lived in Mystic Falls, he would have been just a ‘normal’ werewolf. Not a hybrid sired to the most evil person she knew.
“Well if you change your mind,” Caroline had no problem using her blood to heal people. Unlike some people. “You don’t have to apologize,” Caroline said softly. “It’s not your fault.” Besides she was pretty sure Tyler liked the whole being a hybrid thing, minus the sired to Klaus part.
A nod. Caroline would be the first to know if Elena did change her mind.
“Just my blood.” Hijacked by Klaus for his own purposes. Even if Elena hadn’t turned Tyler, he had been turned by her all the same.
“If it wasn’t for your blood, Tyler would have died,” Caroline pointed out. “Like all the other hybrids Klaus tried to make.”
And if it weren’t for Elena, Klaus wouldn’t have been in Mystic Falls in the first place. Another nod. Caroline was right, too. Tyler would have been dead without her blood. But she couldn’t quite get rid of the guilt associated with it.
“Yeah.” And if they’d had her blood, the other wolves would have survived. There was no winning against Klaus. A shake of her head. “There’s enough doom and gloom without this particular discussion.”
“You’re right. And this is supposed to be a fun day.” Why did the dreams have to always get in the way? Their lives in Mystic Falls weren’t the best. And although some things did carry over and couldn’t be avoided. That didn’t mean they had to let ruin their lives here. “Now,” Caroline said picking up a pair of boots. “What do you think of these?”
“I think that they look fabulous,” Elena smiled. Caroline was always the more fashion-forward of the pair, and she did have great taste. “And maybe you need a new outfit to really set them off.”
