The last two weeks had been absolute hell for Dany. Viserys was on a warpath. He blamed her for everything that had happened and on top of everything that was going on at home, lawyers were getting involved. There was a court date and Dany was right in the middle of it. It wouldn’t take long before they put the pieces together and found out everything that Dany had been running from her entire life. They would both go to prison.

Dany thought about running, about bringing Viserys with her, but he kept telling her that he would take care of it. She didn’t think he really understood what was at stake. She had killed a man when she was fourteen. She hadn’t even done that great of a job of covering it up. It was only a matter of time! But every time Dany brought this up it only brought a world of hurt down on her. It got to the point where Dany couldn’t go out anywhere or see anyone without wearing a pound of makeup and dark glasses.

But it all came crumbling down the day that Viserys came home from a meeting with the lawyers and forced himself on her. He didn’t give her a reason. He didn’t say a word, he just pushed her up against a wall and something inside of Dany snapped. She wasn’t this person. She was stronger than this. She was a Khaleesi. She had seen things in her life, been through things that other people couldn’t even comprehend and she wasn’t going to take it anymore.

She caught Viserys off guard. She had never fought back before. He wasn’t expecting it. The vase shattered over his head and he slumped to the floor right in front of her. She didn’t even help him to the ground, she just let him fall and then gave him a good kick in the chest for good measure once he was there.

“You bastard!” she spat at him, tears in her eyes, but he couldn’t hear her. “I won’t live in fear of you anymore. Not you, not anyone! Fuck you! Fuck you, fuck you!” Her voice was hoarse with emotion as she realized what she had to do. She started to pace. The very idea made her stomach tie itself into little knots, but she just knew it had to be done. She needed to be re-born. She needed to put the weeping child to sleep and come out on the other end a Queen.

One of her plans had been to burn the house down and run away with Viserys. There was evidence in the house that could put both of them away. Now the plan was different. It was to burn both of them alive inside of that house and see just which one of them was really born of fire.

She didn’t give it anymore thought than that. She was in a blind, weeping rage as she went to her room and got the gasoline cans out of her closet.

It was surprising how little time it took before the house started going up in flames. The gas lit immediately and started to consume the room around them. A certain calm had taken over her as soon as she lit the match. Somehow she just knew it was right.

The growing fire caught a neighbor’s attention, and from there the ladders were fast to respond. Steve was with it; they weren’t the closest, but they’d had the best traffic. He was with the group that went into the house, in no small part because he was almost at the physical levels of his dreams, and he couldn’t in good conscience stay back when he had abilities that gave him an edge.

Of course, it was probably difficult to recognize him in all of the gear and safety equipment. The firefighters could be heard pushing their way in as they searched for trapped residents. They assumed that the blaze was an accident; investigations would come later, but for now they had to believe that any residents at home were trapped and in need of rescue.

Dany was still conscious when she heard the sirens. She hadn’t exactly worked out a scenario where the firefighters responded in a timely manner. She panicked. This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen.

Dany left Visery’s body in the living room and bolted for the door. Maybe she could lock it before they got inside the house. As soon as she left the living room a ceiling beam collapsed behind her. It startled her and she threw herself forward out of the way of the collapse, landing on the floor in a coughing, dirty heap.

With bits of ceiling coming down, Steve disregarded safety a little and made a dash for the moving figure. It was only when he was almost upon her that he realized he knew this woman. There wasn’t much to say through his mask, and this wasn’t really the time for shocked hellos, anyway.

Unless Dany put up a fight, he’d try to pick her up and carry her out. With the smoke and the heat, the EMTs would probably want to see her when they arrived. They could talk then, after the flames were under control.
Dany was in no condition to put up any kind of fight. She was having trouble just catching her breath and she realized in that moment that she had been an idiot to think she could walk into a fire and come out of it unscathed. It was something she would have to spend more time thinking about later, after she was safe. Viserys, on the other hand, was probably already beyond the point where he could be saved, but Dany felt no remorse in that. Good riddance.

Other firefighters were moving further into the house to try and control the blaze, but Steve turned and went for the entrance. As they ducked out and into the open, he could see the flashing lights of another engine, but no ambulance. Great. So he’d just have to make due with what he had in the truck.

Since they were out in the open, he adjusted his mask to make it easier to talk. “Dany? It’s Steve. I’m going to--”

Aha. And there were the ambulance sirens. Maybe he wouldn’t have to go looking for oxygen, after all.

When Steve pulled away his oxygen mask Dany thought for sure that she was hallucinating. It took her a double take and some more coughing to really convince herself that the man she’d woken up with randomly one morning and then spent the rest of the week with was saving her.... and it really was saving, wasn’t it? Dany definitely felt the smoke in her lungs. If it hadn’t been for him she would be dead now.

“Steve, I --” what? Just killed her brother? Started the fire? Am a horrible person? Someone like Steve Rogers could never understand someone like her. “Thank you. You saved my life.”

“You’ll be fine,” Steve promised. It wasn’t the time for questions, so he didn’t ask them. Instead, he smiled a quick smile and turned his attention to the EMTs. “She’s a friend of mine,” he told the man and woman who were piling out of the ambulance. It didn’t matter in terms of treatment, but Steve hoped they’d remember, because he would attempt to check on Dany’s condition, once the fire was out.

“I’ll be back,” he promised Dany. “I have to go back in and help, but I’ll be back later.”
