Jessica hadn’t expected the Irvine Police Force to hire her. While she had no political problems with the police, she did have a personal one. Namely, they tended to not like her, and she, in turn, wasn’t particularly fond of them either. So when the PD had called her to look into a missing person, she had been surprised but eventually accepted. It would be easier to do her job later if she managed to get a good rapport with them now.
Still, it meant that she had to come by the station to get the information she needed for the case. “No, Jones,” she said, exasperated. “Jessica Jones.” How the hell had the receptionist got Jesse James? “I’m with Alias Investigations. Come on, I know that there’s a note somewhere there saying to expect me. Look again.”
Judy heard a familiar bossy tone and stopped in her tracks, glancing around for its source. She saw Jessica at the front desk and she couldn’t help but have her curiosity piqued. She walked over, glancing from the officer on duty to Miss Jones, and smiled. “Jessica! What are you doing here?” She looked at the officer. “She’s not on the schedule?”
Jessica’s eyes widened a little in surprise at seeing the officer that had bought her a coffee. She probably should have expected to see her here, but it hadn’t even crossed her mind. She was equally surprised that the officer remembered her name, because as much as Jessica tried to think of the other woman’s name, nothing came to mind. “I should be,” Jessica grumbled. “I’m here to get some information on a missing person’s case I’m supposed to be working on, but someone,” not naming names, but it should be pretty obvious who she was talking about, “can’t find me in the system.”
Jessica had certainly made an impression on Judy, but she also had a knack for remembering people. She thought it was only polite to remember people when they introduced themselves to you, whether they wanted to or not. Judy was happy to see her usual flair was in tact and she glanced at the poor officer seated at the receiving end of Jessica’s wrath. He held up his hands in defeat.
“I can’t say what happened, but she’s not on the list!” Judy tilted her head and leaned over, flipping the book so she could see it. Sure enough, her name wasn’t on the list. “I’ll sign her in,” she said, handing the book back to him. She gave him her badge number and in return, received a visitor badge for Jessica. “You’re welcome,” she said with a grin, handing it to her.
“What case are you working on?”
“Thanks,” Jessica said belatedly, hanging the visitor badge from her neck. “Irwin Shaylyn. His wife came to me a couple weeks ago. I only just now managed to get the PD to let me work on it with them.” It was a lot easier when she could get access to the police records on the case, instead of just doing everything from scratch.
“I...haven’t heard of that one.” Judy frowned as she tried to stay on top of all the cases that floated around the department. Whether she was actively working on one or wanting to know of other things going on in the area, she felt she had pretty good knowledge of all things going on in Irvine. This one sounded new.
“What’s it about?”
“He went missing last week,” Jessica said. “He’d called his wife to let her know he’d be late at work, but then he didn’t come home that night. Or the next morning.” Jessica’s first thought had been that he had been having an affair, but it had been long enough now that she didn’t think that that was the case anymore.
“48 hours missing?” Judy shook her head, not liking the sound of that. “Do you need another set of eyes?” She had a few files sitting on her desk that she had to finish up that day, but this sounded WAY more interesting. “Who’s the cop on the case?”
“A McGreer,” Jessica said. She had actually been supposed to meet him, but the idiot at the front desk hadn’t been terribly helpful in that regard. “From the sounds of it, he had too many cases and was happy to hand it off when I called.” Which Jessica wouldn’t complain about. A paycheque was a paycheque, after all.
Judy snorted and shook her head. “If you don’t mind, I’ll take a look with you. I think I’d be better help than what McGreer can offer.” Judy usually kept her opinions of her fellow cops to herself, but she couldn’t help but let her opinion be known. Jessica seemed to be the type of person who wouldn’t put up with any kind of bullshit and most of the department was full of it. At least Judy would be able to help without trying to hit on her or demean her.
“C’mon, my desk is over here.”
Jessica frowned a little to herself, following Judy to her desk. “Listen, Officer Hopps. I’ll appreciate any help or information you can offer me, but I work alone,” she said, trying to make an effort to be gentle but not entirely succeeding. Hopps really did seem like a nice woman, and Jessica didn’t want to hurt her feelings, but she also didn’t want to get Hopps hopes up about some kind of partnership.
Judy tried her best not to smile as Jessica tried to keep her distance. “You make it seem like we’re gonna become Velma and Louise or something!” Judy hesitated for a moment and grinned. “Can I be Louise? Jeepers!” She couldn’t help but laugh, her face straightening as she looked at Jessica. “Sorry,” she said, clearing her throat. “But I’m not asking to be your partner. I’m just asking to take a look at it!”
“Thema,” Jessica corrected her absently. “Velma was in the Scooby Squad.” She signed a little. She really would have preferred to do all of it on her own, including looking at the file, but she had the feeling all she would do by trying to dissuade the officer was waste energy. “Alright, just so long as you’re only going to take a look at it with me.”
Judy couldn’t help but laugh at her correction. “No, yeah Velma! Don’t you think what we’re doing is kind like the Scooby Squad? Investigating and all that?” She grinned at her. She definitely got the impression that Jessica was a work by herself kinda girl, but it never hurt to have a second set of eyes on it! Besides, this wasn’t going to be a permanent thing!
Judy crossed her heart and held up her hand. “Promise. So what have you got so far?”
