It had been a long time since the last time Katou had been at Baxter’s Bakery. After everything that had happened near the beginning of the year, he’d taken to keeping to himself. His boyfriend not being able to leave his house, and Katou spending most of the year when he wasn’t with Michael high, hadn’t exactly helped with the going out thing.
But he was off the junk again, and he knew the key to staying clean was to keep himself busy. So he’d started his morning runs again, his shoulder length blond hair pulled back in a ponytail to keep it off his face. He’d always liked Baxter’s - Izzy had been one of his first close friends from the Network, and had given him a short-lived job at Baxter’s a few years ago. And so when his run brought him near the bakery, he slowed and walked in for something caffeinated and chocolatey.
He wasn’t expecting to see the blonde behind the counter. She looked familiar, and he furrowed his brow and stared at her when he walked in. Didn’t he know her from somewhere? He glanced at the display case, and once he made his decision he made his way to the counter. “Hey,” he said.
Rose had been refilling the muffins and the scones. It had been a fairly slow morning, but those were her favorite. It allowed her to clean around the bakery at her own pace and have longer chats with the customers. When she straightened up at the greeting, she had her usual customer service smile on. When she recognized who it was, she practically beamed. “Well, hey stranger,” she said, leaning on the counter. “Where’ve you been?”
On his couch, mostly, completely disengaged with the world. But Katou wasn’t about to admit that, not to someone he barely knew. “Oh, you know, here and there,” he answered. It was a little disarming, how happy she seemed to be to see him. “How ‘bout you? Since when did you work here?”
“Uhh...three months and it’ll be a year!” Rose hadn’t realized how much time had passed since she had started working at Baxter’s. Time flew when you were having fun! She’d forever be thankful for getting the job here; she attributed it to how she got to know so many people around the area and from the network!
“You came here to visit me a couple months ago, don’t you remember?” Rose raised an eyebrow at him. “I’m that forgettable?”
“Yeah, you must be,” Katou said, scratching his cheek in concentration. He let that linger for a moment before he continued. “All I remember is some annoying girl who tackled me and then made me go see a chick flick.” One that he’d already seen and had been planning on watching again anyway, but she didn’t need to know that.
Rose couldn’t help but give him a big pout face at what he said. She knew he could be a bit brash and honest, but she thought they had been a bit closer than he was letting on. She always wanted to try and be the type of girl to stand out, but she realized she could be seen as just another pretty face in the OC.
“Yeah, well you deserved it,” she muttered, leaning against the counter. “Fine, no memory, no friend discount then.” She wanted to stick her tongue out at Katou but decided against it. “So what were you gonna have today?”
“Fine, I’ll just invoke my former employee discount,” Katou said cheerily. He glanced back at the display. “A couple of ‘em triple chocolate brownies and a mocha,” he said after a moment.
“You use to work here?” Rose gave him a skeptical look and moved behind the counter to get the brownies and start his mocha. “Sorry sir, I have no record or indication you did so I’ll be unable to process that discount.” Her tone was teasing and light as she was sure he actually had; Baxter’s seemed to be a stepping stone for everyone on the net.
“Oh yeah, forever ago.” He’d needed a job once he’d stopped dealing, and he’d only made it one day at McDonald’s before getting the boot. Izzy had been good enough to give him a job at Baxter’s, and while he hadn’t been there very long, it had been where he’d been working when he’d finally been recruited by the Agency.
“Forever ago, huh? I dunno if that gives you quite the same discount as before, but I’ll see what I can do.” Rose gave him a wink, handing him his mocha and brownies. “That’ll be a $1.50.”
Katou’s eyebrows lifted a little in surprise at the price, but he wasn’t about to complain. He really hadn’t expected to give her even the Forever Ago Employee discount, and he frowned to himself as he handed over the change. He should probably work on finding people to keep him entertained if he was going to stay clean. Katou couldn’t exactly see Michael during the day, and Kanan had his own life to live. “Listen, Blondie,” he said. “If you ever wanted to like, watch a movie again or something, you might be able to convince me.”
Rose couldn’t help but grin at his offer, shutting the cash drawer and glancing up at him. “That was a fast upgrade! Going from barely recognizing me to being up for another movie night.” But Rose could never say no to another movie night and hanging out with him. “Will you pay for the popcorn again if I get the icee?”
“I still think you’re getting the better deal out of that,” Katou grumbled. Popcorn really wasn’t cheap. “But yeah, fine. I’ll get the popcorn. And we ain’t gonna go see some chick flick, Ima tell you that right now.”
Rose considered it a moment before sticking her hand out for him to shake. “Deal. You get the popcorn and you get to choose the movie!” Rose wasn’t sure what she had to do to get into his memory a bit more, but spending more time with him definitely seemed like the next best step to it. “I’m off on Wednesday, wanna go then?”
“Wednesday works,” Katou said. Well, assuming the county didn’t decide to implode on itself on Wednesday, which seemed as likely as not. “Wanna meet there, or should I pick you up?”
“Aw, are you taking me out for a date?” Rose teased, batting her eyelashes at him. Or what she thought was batting her eyelashes at him. “But I can meet ya there. I don’t even know what’s out right now.” She made a face. “Is there something you wanna see?”
“You wish,” Katou snorted. “You’re definitely not my type.” He frowned thoughtfully to himself, wondering if there was a movie he had wanted to go check out. “Ain’t there some new Mission Impossible movie out?” he asked, though obviously, he knew the answer.
She gave him a teasing pouty face, before shrugging her shoulders. “Yeah, I think I heard somethin’ about one. How many are there now? And more importantly, how come Tom Cruise never gets old?” She held her hands out in question, shrugging her shoulders. “But yeah, that's cool.”
Katou snorted. “Cool,” he said. “I’ll meet you there then. Wednesday.”
