There had been a time, once, long ago, when Jessica had actually enjoyed her birthdays. She’d get her friends together, and her mother would bake her a cake, and all her friends and family would sing her happy birthday. But that had been a long time ago. More than half a lifetime ago, now. Her fourteenth birthday was the last that she’d been able to celebrate like that, and for her fifteenth she’d been living with the Walkers, in that horrible, dysfunctional home. She hadn’t even been able to spend a birthday with Sterling.
No, now, now her birthdays were just like any other day, as far as she was concerned. A day where she ended up, once again, at the bar, drinking by herself. Not because of something stupid like her birthday, but just because that’s what she did. Though, these days, it was taking a whole lot more alcohol than normal to get her drunk. She wondered if was a side-effect of these super new powers she was developing. She gestured to the bartender. “I’ll get another,” she said, which would make it five and still hardly a buzz.
Keith Mars always made a big deal about Veronica’s birthday. As he did with all holidays growing up. But Veronica had never been that into it. She didn’t like to be the center of attention. Preferred not to be celebrated. Ever since college her birthday had been like just any other day.
Still it had been acknowledged. Her dad called of course, and a few friends had given her the usual birthday text. But as for Veronica? All she wanted was a night off from being a mom. So off to a bar she went. Walking in she spotted a familiar brunette, of course Veronica decided to take the empty bar stool next to Jessica. “Of all the bars…” she commented with a smirk.
At the sound of a familiar voice, Jessica turned from the bartender to her friend. “And you walk into mine,” Jessica finished, a hint of a smile on her lips. “Wasn’t expecting to see you here today. It’s still Wednesday, isn’t it?”
“Sure is,” she signaled the bartender to come over, placing her order for a Manhattan. “I took the night off from mommy duty.” And PI work for that matter. “Best birthday gift Logan could have given me.”
Jessica’s head jerked up in surprise, and she looked at Veronica. “It’s your birthday?” she asked. “Today?”
“Sure is,” Veronica replied as the bartender brought her drink over. “And all I got was a cactus.”
Jessica couldn’t help but raise her eyebrows at that. “A cactus? Who would give you a cactus on your birthday?”
“This cop I used to babysit.” That basically summed up her relationship with Leon. Though he was sort of like family now. “It’s a long story. He has a thing for cacti.”
Jessica raised an eyebrow sceptically. There was a lot in that statement - a cop who Veronica used to babysit who had a ‘thing’ for cactuses - that she wanted to ask about, but she wasn’t sure where to start and decided that she probably didn’t want to know that much after all.
“Well, happy birthday,” Jessica said. “It’s mine today, too.”
That was a coincidence that Veronica was not expecting. “Happy birthday to us both.” Though Jessica didn’t exactly seem the type to care much about birthday wishes. Much like Veronica. “I guess this means we have to have some birthday drinks. Or you know, just drinks.”
“Hey, I’ll take either,” Jessica said with a smile, waving down the bartender. “Hey, handsome,” she said, to the surprise of the bartender; Jessica hadn’t done much so far tonight other than drink quietly and check her phone, let alone flirt with the bartender. “It’s our birthdays today. Think you can swing us something?”
The bartender raised his eyebrows, a little surprised, but then smiled. “Yeah, I think I could mix you guys a couple of shots on the house,” he responded.
Veronica raised a brow at the exchange. She wasn’t expecting that from Jessica. But hey, free drinks. “You know I think we should say it’s our birthday every time,” Veronica commented. Though she was sure it was more to do with Jessica’s flirting than the actual birthday.
“It only works the first couple of times, then they start getting suspicious about why it always seems to be your birthday,” Jessica said, actually smiling a little. As much as she didn’t want to admit it, spending her birthday with Veronica was better than spending it alone. “How old are you turning anyway?”
“We’ll just have to go to different bars,” Veronica replied with a smirk. This place was full of them after all. “Thirty-two. Getting up there I know,” she joked. “And you?”
Jessica couldn't help but stare at Veronica for a moment, and then she shook her head. In the grand scheme of Orange County weirdness, this barely should have been on the radar. “Would you believe me if I said the same?” she asked.
Veronica’s brows furrowed as Jessica stared. Why was her age so odd? Unless….. her suspicion was confirmed when Jessica stated the exact conclusion Veronica had come to. She was 32 as well. The blonde burst out laughing. “Well, shit,” she commented. “You’d think the world couldn’t handle both of us on the same day.”
“Oh yeah, someone up there really messed up that day,” Jessica said with a wry smile. “Here’s to 32,” she said, holding up her drink for a cheers.
“To 32,” Veronica repeated with a smirk as she clinked glasses with Jessica before downing her drink. “Another round,” she told the bartender. “We’re celebrating.”
