What: Rose punches James in the face
When: Early July/Late June
Where: The beach
Rating: Low
Status: Complete!
With the rebuilding of the Inferno on hold, Rose had a lot of free time. She still had her position at Baxter’s, but when you worked two jobs, moving down to one really freed up some time. At first, she didn’t know what to do with it. She had probably binged watched too many shows on Netflix, more than she wanted to admit to another human being. There was always working out...a thought that made her groan but seemed the right choice. She’d always been fit, but not necessarily healthy. She thanked her summer bod to a high metabolism; God help them all if she had to give up her favorite chips.
So Friday morning(ish) saw Rose heading down to the beach, work out clothes on and determination written on her face. It had been awhile since she had done anything...you were suppose to stretch before any running, right? She stretched out her arms and legs, leaning against the posts for support. She glanced down at the waves, wondering how long she’d be dumping sound outta these shoes...well, maybe we well dub these the beach shoes. She could do with a shopping trip...it’d been awhile and she could do with some new summer clothes…
Lost in thought, Rose swung for her left arm to hold her right out in a stretch, knocking it into someone. “Oh shit, sorry mate!” She held out a hand as she bent to try and catch the strangers eye. “Are you alright?”
James hadn’t put up any signs on his private beach warning people that it was a private beach. Frankly, he didn’t really care that much. The beach was for everyone to enjoy, and it seemed like kind of a waste to have a patch of sandy land with no beach babes to populate it. Besides, it seemed like most people in California knew how these things worked. His beach was definitely less busy than the public beaches he’d gone to, which was nice for those mornings he liked to sleep in. Which was, to be fair, most every morning. He had no need to wake up early when he didn’t have a job to go to.
He’d just been sitting down from breakfast when he saw the pretty blonde wander onto his beach, and he thought that it would be neighbourly to go and introduce himself to her. Unfortunately, before he had a chance to say anything, something had hit him in the face and, in his surprise, he fell to the ground.
“Well, if the coffee hadn’t done it, that certainly would have woken me up,” he said, rubbing his cheek. It had stung, but he didn’t think it he was that hurt. Just to be safe, he ran his tongue over his teeth, and was pleased to note that everything still seemed to be in place. He took her hand to pull himself up. “You go around punching everyone you just meet?”
“I was just having a stretch, yeah? I didn’t see you coming ‘round!” She pulled him up and shaded her eyes to look at his face. “Bloody hell, I’m sorry mate! Does it hurt?” At least it hadn’t been too hard? She reached out to touch his cheek, grimacing a bit.
“That was a bit of a cock up, wasn’t it?” he asked, giving one last disgruntled rub to his face before offering her a bit of a smile. “I think you might have knocked a tooth or two loose, but I’ll be okay,” he said, a joking tone in his voice.
When Rose realized he was alright, she grinned, shaking her head. “Yeah, right mate. Send me the bill when they do.” She looked around, realizing he had seemed to come from nowhere. She was sure she had been the only one around. “Where did you come from?” she challenged, looking back at him. “It’s like you appeared from thin air!”
“I’m a wizard,” James said teasingly, giving her a wink. It probably would have been just as easy to say that he lived in the house that was only just a few metres from the beach, but where was the fun in that?
Rose laughed, nodding her head as if it were completely believable. And maybe he was! Anything was possible in the OC. “You’ll have to show me your ways. Being able to sneak up on people is always a good talent to have!” Not to mention fun.
“Care to join me for a run?”
“A wizard never reveals his tricks,” James said, winking at her. Her offer for him to run with him took him by surprise. It wasn’t very often that he met someone friendly enough to invite a complete stranger on a morning run with them. “Sounds fun,” he answered after a moment. It had been a while since the last time he’d gone for a run, though he had kept himself in fairly good shape after his football days had ended.
Rose had to admit, she was a bit surprised that he took her up on the offer! Even though the punch may have broken the ice a bit early, a physical activity with a stranger? A bit queer, but she wouldn’t complain about having the company. Having someone to talk to might make the time go by faster. “Brilliant!” she said with a smile, nodding her head down to the surf.
“Do you need to stretch or anything like that?” She gave him a teasing grin with the tip of her tongue touching her top lip.
“If by stretching, you mean punching some poor bloke in the face, I’ll pass,” James said, grinning back at her. Even as he spoke though, he was giving his quads a brief stretch. Not a proper stretch, maybe, but enough to get them slightly warm.
“Yeah, you should try it!” she said, squatting and stretching out each leg. “Really gets the blood goin’!” She grinned, shaking her head and grabbing her foot to stretch her calves. “So really, what were you doing on the beach if not going for a run too?”
“What, a guy can’t just come to the beach to take in the view?” James asked cheekily. “Though I live near here, so it’s not like it was much of a trek to get here.”
Rose considered it and shrugged. “I guess I can’t blame ya. Although kinda lonely just for one, don’t ya think? The view should be shared with other people!” She grinned, glancing around as if she could see the house he had mentioned. “Alright, ready to go?”
“You’re out here on your lonesome too,” James pointed out with a smirk. He rolled his head to either side, gave his arms a quick stretch over his chest, and nodded. “Yeah, I’m ready when you are.”
