Loki didn’t often call his brother. In his opinion, Thor was the kind of person who was best appreciated at a distance, so that day-to-day annoyances could fall away and leave only the positive memories behind. He was clever enough to realize that he was controlling the terms of their relationship, but Loki couldn’t bring himself to regret the choice – he wanted to love his brother, and in order to do that he needed small doses. It wasn’t supposed to be time for another call, and certainly not so late into the evening, but the dream had been unsettling. Things had begun innocuously enough. Some kind of ceremony full of people in ridiculous hats and bits of metal, Thor prancing around and enjoying the attention. A break in. Hard words from Odin. Loki would have written it off as his subconscious working through his complicated feelings for his family, but then they’d taken a bridge to somewhere horrible, and he saw a side of his brother that he hadn’t ever encountered before. Whatever he thought of Thor, Loki did not for an instant believe that he was the sort of man who’d kill another person to win glory. So, when he woke, he was shaken enough to reach for the telephone. It wasn’t until he hit his brother’s voicemail that he changed his mind; he was being foolish and overreacting. None the less, he left a message. That too was almost unheard of; on the rare occasions that Loki called instead of simply answering when his family reached out to him, he never left messages if he got a machine. “It’s not important,” Loki began, immediately playing it off as if he’d dialed on a whim. “I wanted to check in. Call when you have a chance.” Then he hung up and silently chastised himself. Be sensible, Loki, it was a dream. Nothing. Too much time on set, combined with the looming threat of Thanksgiving dinner at Odin’s table. But he wanted to talk to his brother, and badly. After twenty minutes of idly flipping channels, Loki pulled himself from his seat and went for the door. A walk – perhaps a walk would help. |
