In Natasha’s line of work, there was following someone, and then there was following someone. The real difference was whether or not you wanted them to know they were being followed. It was useful, to see how they reacted.
It was also kind of fun.
One day, she might be sitting at a table at Starbucks. The next, walking down the street and just passing by. The one after that just a face in a crowd. Never looking exactly the same, either. Wigs, make-up, each different enough to throw off most people even if they’d met her before.
But the same tell, every time. Something deliberate. Something that might get noticed if seen often enough. A test.
There was always a rose. A sticker on a laptop. A lapel pin. A design on an umbrella.
Now that she had graduated, Ruby was...trying to find something to do with her time as well as get a job since the internship didn’t turn into a full time job after Asami moved and the new management took over. She didn’t let it get her down though. It just meant that something else was bound to come up.
So most of her time was spent getting tea, or meeting Blake for reading picnics, or getting things to work on projects.
But Ruby also couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being followed. While her senses were more in tune with being aware of Grimm, it would be a lie to say that her time on the road to Haven, especially before she had realized that Qrow had been following her and the others, had made her maybe a bit paranoid and wanting to be aware of things. She believed in the goodness of people, that it could be reached, but she also knew there were dangers and that was why she fought. It wasn’t that she was blind to the bad or dangerous, it was just she wanted to protect people from it.
Which meant that she had started to notice a rose following her. Which was fitting given her last name. The last name of her mom. And it was stupid and foolish but there was a part of her that had to wonder….what if Summer had remembered? Or part of her? That she had shown up in Orange County but either because she wasn’t completely sure or because she didn’t know how to approach her, she was instead trying to send her a message?
She had noticed the woman with the rose again though. Not just any rose, but the same one that had been showing up lately and deciding that she just wanted to know, Ruby turned down an alley so that she could confront the person following her. Tilting her head to the side some, she listened with her eyes closed. Just follow her instincts and…
Stepping out again, Ruby found herself in the path of the woman with the Rose.
Who was decidedly not Summer and she felt her heart constrict with her foolish hope before she quickly pushed it aside.
“Um..is there a reason you’ve been following me?”
“I was wondering when you’d say something,” Natasha drawled, pulling off her sunglasses and studying her with emerald eyes. After all, anyone who Nat hired she wanted to have some kind of situational awareness. There were too many enemies. Hydra would love to get their hands on Ruby Rose. “Consider it a job offer.”
And once the sunglasses came off, Ruby realized that it was Natasha. You tended to get to someone, even briefly, when in a plane with them going on a secret rescue mission. Which..there were still things Ruby didn’t think about from that either even though she knew that her actions had been necessary.
She did have to blink though at the second part of the sentence though.
“Wait, you following me was an interview?”
That was...the weirdest interview she’d ever had and she wasn’t quite sure what the position even was.
“It’s...actually for an engineering and sciences position, but because of the sensitive nature I like to make people aware of certain dangers they might not otherwise have to worry about,” Natasha replied. She gestured towards a nearby coffee shop, “Buy you a drink?”
Well, Natasha certainly had her at engineering and sciences and Ruby definitely perked up at that. Though she supposed that made sense that if it was sensitive in nature that it might be good to be more aware of her surroundings and potential danger.
Or Ruby just took too much at face value. Either or.
“Um yeah, okay.”
Still. Something with engineering and science? Of course she was interested.
“Don’t worry, you won’t have to rush off to other countries to rescue people all the time. Unless you want to.” Natasha held the door for her, “Though your combat expertise will probably be useful considering how often we deal with invasions. My scientists want you for your mind, though.”
Ruby nodded some. It wasn’t like she would turn away from rescue missions, it just wasn’t who she was.
“I’d want to. But I would like to be able to focus on science and helping people with what I can make as well.”
Which was what Jemma had tapped her for, and if Nat was honest Ruby was so young she’d prefer she never go out into the field at all, unless there was no other choice.
She ordered herself a latte and stepped aside to let Ruby order something too. “You’ll get access to a lot of alien tech and other advanced equipment. We even have some advanced science and medical equipment from people that have left the county.”
Honestly, some of the x-men medical scanners were amazing.
Once Ruby got it into her head to help someone, it was very hard to talk her out of it. It was why she’d been unable to stand by while the rescue mission to help Ilia went down. She’d already been helping in the search but once she had known what was being done, the sort of people involved? There was no way she could have stayed back.
As was her usual, she got an iced chocolate drink and stepped back so they could wait for their orders to be made.
“Ohmigod, that sounds amazing.”
Fastest way to get her interested? New and exciting tech. In the Dreams it was weapons (and some of that did cross over here as well) but here? Tech. All the tech.
Excitement was good. Excitement and enthusiasm could be in small supply these days, and for a moment Nat felt a little excited herself. She took a seat and leaned back, “Which technical area are you most interested in? We need generalized tech, but it's good to know strengths.
Well, even when things were bad, Ruby was the type to find something to be excited about and just help people. Even if it led to people thinking she was more naive or even stupid than she was. As for what technical area she was most interested in? That was a tough one.
“I mean, I went to school for mechanical engineering? But I don’t know if I’d be able to narrow it down anymore than that. I enjoy all of it. I just like...being able to see how things fit together when I have all these different parts and making something that helps others.”
“Well, if you’re interested, I can just my science head work with you to figure out where you fit the best,” Natasha decided. “But don’t decide anything today.”
She pulled out a packet, “Benefits, pay, risks. You’re a Dreamer so I don’t have to keep things vague on the latter, at least.”
This was all….very overwhelming. But in a good way. Ruby had been wanting to figure out her next step and while she wasn’t entirely sure where she’d end up, this was obviously a good opportunity. Or well, she would need to look at the packet that was just handed to her.
“Thank you so much.” She was undoubtedly going to say yes. But that was beside the point.
Natasha held out the package, “Number is in there. Be aware that if any of this gets out past you and your immediate circle of friends I’ll have to kill you.”
A flash of teeth, “Kidding.”
Or was she.
Ruby just blinked some at the threat but nodded.
“Noted!”
She could actually keep secrets and well, she knew there would be some who knew what she did but Ruby wasn’t really the type to go out and just talk about all the things ever with people she didn’t know. But those she really trusted? Yeah. She’d probably mention it, especially since she’d need to somehow explain having a job and she was horrible at lying. She just didn’t see it coming up all that much.
Nat knew that and prepared for it. Besides, she’d seen how well Blake had fought and could guess most of the rest of those close to Ruby were as skilled. She wasn’t going to look potential assets in the mouth. Or something. “Just ring me up when you’re ready.”
Ruby nodded.
“Will do! Thank you again!”
This was definitely exciting and well…. It would go into her helping people thing even if not exactly as she had planned before. Life was weird like that and it was at least something. Especially since they understood the weird of this place and she’d probably be able to be used for other things like fighting as necessary. Multi-purpose. For now though, it was drinking her iced hot chocolate and looking more over the benefits packet.
