Merlin, while having more magic than probably anybody else currently around, still liked doing some things without the aid of magic. DIY just happened to be one of those things, he liked the satisfaction of putting up a shelf or fixing a door hinge. It was just one of those things, and thankfully Audrey indulged him and let him have a project or two on the go.
Today he was searching for some particular screws for a table he was making but he’d been distracted by some new and shiny tools which he happened to reach for at the same time as someone else.
“Oh sorry, go ahead” he smiled gesturing at the woman to take the thing they’d both been after.
Tink had to build some shelves for the greenhouse in Frank’s yard. This was one of those things that really dragged her in. She was obsessed with greenhouses and seeds and all of the stuff involved with gardening. Because Frank was. (Truthfully, and unbeknownst to Tink herself, she was mostly obsessed with Frank.)
She was reaching for some screws because she was building the shelves out of galvanized steel, and these would work the best with the materials she already had. But her hand bumped into someone else’s--someone she hadn’t seen because she’d been so focused on the different lengths of screws.
“Oh! No, I’m sorry. You go ahead.” She gave him an awkward smile.
“I think there are enough that we aren’t going to need to fight for them” Merlin said, “Which is a relief” he grinned at her taking a package off the shelf before stepping aside so she could get a closer look at it all.
“You’re probably right.” The awkward smile became a bit more genuine as she picked up some of the screws that she was looking for. “Hey, you have any idea if these will rust? I mean, I don’t think so, but I’m building a shelf for plants in a greenhouse, and it’ll probably get wet and humid.”
“I don’t think they will” he said looking at the packet, “I think this symbol means all weathers” he added when he saw it on the packet. “Are you a keen gardener or is this a first attempt?” he asked, making a bit of conversation since he wasn’t in a hurry and she seemed to be a friendly sort. She’d smiled at his lame joke anyway.
“Ahhh,” Tink said, looking at the packet. “Yeah, I think you’re right.” It made sense that the little raindrops would mean all weather, wouldn’t it? “This is a first attempt. Really, it was my boyfriend’s idea, I just thought it’d be fun to create a watering system and humidity controls. I’ve never done anything like that before.” She gave him another smile. “What are you making?”
That was Merlin’s guess but he was far from an expert. “Wow, sounds like you’re way more creative with your fun hobbies than I am” he grinned, “I’m trying to make a table for my wife, it’s for the outside patio at the right height for her when she’s sat down so she doesn’t get back ache” he explained. He wanted her to be able to do crafty things without bending over.
“Yeah?” Tink smirked a little, proud, like a peacock, when he gave her the compliment. She was a very creative person to begin with, so having that reinforced really made her feel good. “That’s so sweet of you. I bet your wife will love it.” She said. It was kind of him to do something so nice for his wife. Would Frank ever do something like that for her?
“Definitely, creating a watering system is impressive on all levels” Merlin assured her, he appreciated creativity even if he didn’t have lots of it himself. “Thanks, I hope so” he nodded, he liked doing things for Audrey, she did so much for their little family that he liked doing things for her.
“It’s fun to tinker with things,” Tink said, giving him a smile. “I mean, it’s sort of what I do. I’m an engineer, so I make things up. This is just me… taking my work home, I guess.” The smile on her face brightened considerably. “Oh, I’m sure she will. I mean, the handmade gift is the most heartfelt, right?”
“I get that, I’m an IT technician and I’ve created a few apps and things for fun” Merlin said, he totally understood enjoying what you did and he felt they were lucky to be able to do that. “That’s what they say” he nodded, “Thanks” he appreciated the reassurance.
“Oh yeah?” Tink asked. “Both my brothers work in IT.” She gave this guy a smile wondering if he worked with Bob or Chuck. Probably not, but if he was in IT, he was probably a good guy. He seemed like a really good guy so far, anyway. “Where do you work?”
“I work for Stark Industries, I’m the IT team leader” Merlin said, “It’s a pretty great place to work I have to admit” Merlin knew he was very lucky to have landed the job he did especially since he’d applied from the UK so there had been the visa issue to sort out too.
“Oooh, Stark Industries!” Tink said, breaking into a grin. “Flashy! That’s the kind of place I can see either of them working. Or me, some day. In like twenty years when I’m an even more awesome engineer.” She was pretty good at what she did, but she was still fairly green.
“Well if you ever need an in for an interview or anything just let me know” he offered, always happy to help good people and he could tell she was good people. “I’m Merlin” he added, holding out his hand.
“Wow, really??” Tink was shocked at that offer. But at the same time, she’d never turn it down. If she ever felt she was good enough to work at Stark Industries, this was the guy to contact. “I’m Tink. Er, Belle. I’m Belle.” She said, and reached out to shake his hand.
“Sure, just give me a call or something and we can work it out” he smiled, shaking her hand, “Good to meet you Belle and good luck with your greenhouse shelves” he added.
“Thank you so much. And you with yours.” His project, she meant. Anyway, she finished shaking his hand. “Thanks again.”
“Anytime” Merlin said cheerfully before they parted ways to go and build their respective projects.
