In all honesty, Bo didn’t have that much on her father to bring with her. But she did at least bring the files she’d gotten about her mother that included the story of what had happened to her. There wasn’t a police report to be found, but Bo had her biological father’s name, and someone who could do what he did to her mother no doubt had done it to others as well. A trail should be easy enough to find, right?
So she arrived at the address she’d been given for Mars Investigations with an envelope tucked under her arm. Bo was dressed in her typical all black attire, black skin tight pants, knee-high boots and low-cut tank top top that showed off impressive cleavage. Her make-up was heavy on the eye liner, mascara and eye shadow, but just the right amount of heavy. Luckily for all involved, the succubus had a wedding ring on.
Stepping inside, Bo suddenly felt a little nervous. It was a similar kind of nervous for when she’d hired someone to help her find her biological mother a year and a half ago or so. “Hello?” She asked in greeting.
The majority of Veronica’s cases consisted of catching cheating spouses and getting that money shot. It was easy enough money, and Veronica did hate cheaters. But sometimes she wished she more cases with a bit more substance. In her dreams there was always a murder for her to solve, but here the cops were actually competent. Which was good. But Veronica missed the thrill of catching a truly bad guy.
Finding someone wasn’t too difficult of a job, but it beat another cheating case. Plus there was the whole aspect of the person existing in dreams, but who knew if they were around here? Veronica had a feeling it was going to be a very stimulating case.
Her office consisted of a small waiting area with a couch, then there was the back room. Her actual office, which had her desk with two chairs on the opposite side for clients to sit in. And of course filing cabinets. “Come on back,” Veronica called standing up to greet her client. “Ms. Croft?” she asked as the woman entered her office. She looked oddly familiar but Veronica couldn’t quite place where she had seen her before.
Bo really had no idea how this was going to turn out. While she’d had a good idea of how finding her biological mother would turn out, her father was an entirely different matter. She knew he was watching her and knew exactly where she was. He’d sent her and Lara gifts. Clearly he was trying to get on Bo’s good side for whatever reason. It wasn’t entirely unlike her biological father in her dreams. Hades had twisted and manipulated her into doing what he wanted her to do, and then he ultimately broken her spirit. Of course, she’d snapped out of it thanks to her friends and she sent him back to where he’d been trapped before.
But here? She had little idea of who her father was aside from being a very bad person capable of rape and torture. And probably capable of a lot of other unsavory things.
Hearing the voice, she made her way back into the office, and she gave a smile. “Yeah, hi Veronica, it’s nice to meet you.” She held her hand out in greeting, though the other woman looked familiar. “Have you ever been to the Nightcrawler?” Bo was assuming that was why Veronica looked familiar. Bo had a good eye for remembering customers.
Veronica reached out and shook the other woman’s hand before taking a seat and motioning for Bo to do the same. She paused at the question. “The bar?” Veronica did like to go out for a beer every once in awhile, but she had only been there a few times. It did explain where she knew Bo from though. “You bartend there, right?”
Bo took a seat, setting the envelope on her lap. “Yeah, the bar. And yep, I’m a bartender there.” She was proud of her job, though she was having some aspirations to one day owning her own bar, but that required business know-how, and she’d need to go to school for that. Eventually. She wasn’t in a complete hurry on that front given she enjoyed what she did now.
“Our next meeting can be at your office,” Veronica quipped before getting more serious. Her eyes fell to the envelope on Bo’s lap. “Is that all the information you have on your maybe sister?” Maybe sense just because she existed in the dream world didn’t necessarily mean she existed here. Though for the most part, even if they weren’t dreamers, people from the dreams did tend to be around in real life in one way or another.
“If our next meeting requires a drink, I’m not against it,” she quipped in return. After all, she’d met at a bar with the private investigator she’d hired to find her biological mother, and that discussion had required alcohol to help process some of the information. At the question, Bo picked up the envelope. “Not exactly. It’s more all I have as relevant to my biological father. I hired a private investigator about two years ago, give or take a couple months, to help track down my biological mother. I was adopted, which wasn’t something I learned until I had an extremely heated argument with my adoptive parents when I was seventeen. Said argument led to me running away and never looking back.”
Bo took a little breath, handing the envelope over to Veronica. “It’s not a lot, but I know that any potential sibling I may have would be through my father. The details are in there, but basically I’m the product of a rape, and my father had kidnapped and held my mother prisoner. She’s been in an asylum pretty much ever since I was born. They never filed charges against my father, but there is a description of what happened in there. And I know that my father is watching me, I suppose you would say. He’s sent me and my wife gifts on a couple occasions.” It really creeped her the hell out, though she hadn’t met him in person. Which was probably a good thing because Bo would probably kill him if she did meet him.
Well that was quite a bit of information. Not exactly what Veronica was expecting to hear. But she knew this much already. She hated Bo’s father. Veronica had been date raped at a party back in high school. Both in her real life and the dreams. She caught her rapist in the dreams, but never found out who did it in this world. To say she hated rapists was an understatement.
“I’ll look into him,” Veronica replied. Maybe along with any potential siblings she might just find a way to get Bo’s rapist biological father arrested to. Of course she would run that by Bo at a later time. “What kind of gifts?”
If Veronica found a way to get Bo’s biological father arrested, she’d definitely be down for that. She didn’t like the thought of her father out there hurting people, which is what she assumed he did considering what he’d done to her biological mother.
“I think it was after Lara and I became engaged, he gifted her a ship, a research vessel sort of thing that she could use for her work. She’s an archaeologist. So he’s obviously got a lot of money since those things aren’t exactly cheap.” Lara could probably afford her own research vessel if she gave in and got access to her full fortune, but that was entirely besides the point. “Then a couple months ago, he gave me a puppy.” Unlike the ship, Bo did like the puppy. She loved her silly dog, but that didn’t mean she liked her father anymore than she had before.
Ah, actual gifts. Still on the creepy side for some guy she had never met to give her gifts. But it wasn’t as disturbing as Veronica had pictured. It wasn’t going to be easy to get someone with that much money arrested. Money meant connections. Veronica knew how that went all to well. But that wasn’t what she was hired to do anyway. The sister came first.
“Those are,” she paused, “some interesting gifts,” Veronica finally finished. “With that kind of money it’s not going to be easy to dig up his past. See if he,” raped, “got any other women pregnant.” Though she had a pretty damn good feeling he had. And Veronica’s gut was usually right. “I’ll let you know as soon as I find anything.”
It definitely could’ve been worse, it could’ve been her father from her dreams and no one needed to deal with Hades’ bullshit. Least of all Bo. She’d already paid for that thanks to dream bleedover, and she’d rather not repeat that ever again. Though she had to say that at least the asshole was only human here. She could so easily kill him, but she really didn’t want to suck his chi.
“Yeah, you’re telling me,” Bo responded about the gifts. Though she gave a little nod at the other comment. “I didn’t expect it would be easy. People like him always seem to be untouchable until you find the crack. But thank you, I appreciate it. And be careful, he’s clearly a dangerous man.” Bo would do this investigating herself, but she couldn’t get close enough to him to discover these things without him intercepting her. Hopefully Veronica would have better luck.
“Don’t worry,” Veronica assured Bo. “I can handle myself.” While most of the men she trailed were sleazy husbands cheating on their wives, she had dealt with some more dangerous clients. Similar enough to Bo’s father that she was confident she could handle it. “Do you have any questions?”
Bo nodded a bit. It did seem that most people who lived in Orange County long enough would be able to handle themselves in various situations. But even so, Bo would worry considering she was certain her father wouldn’t take kindly to someone poking around in his business like this. “I don’t think so. If you need any other information to help you while you’re investigating, just let me know. Not that I have much about my father to go on, but I know a good amount about my mother.” Her grandfather had told her a lot about her mother before she’d been kidnapped.
Veronica nodded as Bo spoke. She had enough to go on to get started. But there was always a chance she would run into a wall and need more information. “I’ll be in touch.”
