Liv took Leon’s comment literally. She didn’t eat a new brain though. She didn’t want to risk another personality change. Instead she had one of the brain tubes she had received from her dreams. Not as good as eating a brain fresh. But at least there wouldn’t be any side effects.
Being back to herself, Liv knew she had a lot of making up to do. Brain or not, there was no excuse for her actions. For what she had put Dan through. For what she asked Leon to do for her. Picking up a case of beer she made her way over to Leon’s. No way was she going to apologize empty handed. Case in one hand, she knocked on his door with the other.
Leon hadn’t felt particularly good about how the last few weeks had gone by. He knew, logically, that Dan had no right to be in prison, but he wouldn’t have felt right busting him out even if Liv hadn’t turned into a total banshee about it. As it was, he was definitely regretting it.
Well, maybe regretting was too strong a word. He was glad that Dan wasn’t rotting away for something his girlfriend had done. But there wasn’t anything he could do about it now, other than make sure to do his job and never do something stupid like that again. Chris was sitting on the couch, watching Bear Grylls: Survival School, and Leon had all his crime scene photos spread out across the table when he heard the knock on the door.
He wasn’t really expecting anyone, and he frowned a little. Then he got up, answered the door, and… well, he didn’t really know what to think. Last time he’d seen Liv, she’d been pissed at him for taking a couple of days to decide if he wanted to risk his career. And now she was standing at his door. With a case of beer?
He frowned. “You didn’t steal those, did you?”
“No,” Liv replied. She deserved that. And really with how much the brains influenced her it was entirely possible she had stolen them. “I quit that brain,” she added. It was the truth but who knew if Leon would even believe her. “I came to apologize,” she offered with a sheepish grin, hoping he would let her inside.
Leon pursed his lips together, considering Liv. He was still angry at her, but, well, she’d come with an apology on her lips, and a case of beer. The least he could do was hear her out. At least until the beer was finished.
He stepped aside from the door, a quiet invitation for Liv to come inside.
Liv tentatively stepped inside handing Leon over the case of beer. It was all for him. He deserved that and more. “I shouldn’t have asked you to help with Dan,” she began. “It was my mess. I should have fixed it on my own.” Or not picked up the damn ring in the first place.
Leon made his way to the fridge to place the case of beer inside, pulling out a bottle for himself and for Liv as he did so. He opened them both, put one on one side of the kitchen table and made his way to the other side so he could sit down.
“You shouldn’t have gotten into the mess in the first place,” Leon grumbled. He wasn’t sure what Liv could have done if he hadn’t agreed to help her. He didn’t like the idea of her breaking someone out of jail much more than he liked the idea of himself breaking someone out.
The frustrating thing about being the only zombie around was that no one understood just how overpowering the brains could be. Not that it was an excuse. But still some understanding from Leon would have been nice. She wasn’t going to argue with him about it though. There was no point. She had messed up.
Liv sat down where Leon set the other bottle, but didn’t bother to drink it. It wasn’t spicy enough for her. Plus these were for Leon. Not her. “I know,” was all she said. Because there was nothing else to say. Not without starting an argument which was exactly what she wanted to avoid.
Part of Leon almost wished that Liv would have picked a fight with him, because he was itching to yell at her some more. Frustratingly though, she didn’t give him anything to yell about, so he just sat back in his seat, scowling, and took a pull from his beer.
“Well… just don’t do it again,” he grumbled.
“I won’t,” Liv replied. “I’m off pure brains.” Until she ran out of tubes that was. But there was always the possibility of making them herself. It was just, even with the side effects, she was at least doing some good with the brains she ate. Her visions allowed her to help solve murders. It was the only thing that made being a zombie okay. But it wasn’t worth it. Not anymore.
That caused Leon to raise his eyebrows. Off pure brains? What the hell did that mean? That they were cut with something else? That they weren’t real. “What, so you’re on… synthetic brains now?” he asked.
“No,” Liv replied. “I don’t think that would work,” considering animal brains didn’t work, she didn’t think synthetic brains would either. Was that even a thing? “It’s different brains mixed together. No personality changes. No visions”
For a moment, Leon thought he was going to hurl, and the expression on his face showed it. But he managed to fight down the nausea. “That’s worse,” he said. What did they do? Throw them all in a blender? Jesus Christ, why was he picturing it? “Next time, do me a favour and don’t tell me.”
“Sorry,” Liv frowned. She hadn’t thought that Leon would actually picture the making of the brain tubes. “I thought it would help. Knowing there wouldn’t be any personality changes.” A pause as her eyes fell to the table in front of her. “Even if it means no visions.”
Leon blinked, surprised. “Wait, so you’re just… you?” he asked. “If you’ve got that option, why the hell would you put yourself through all the personality changes?” For the visions, obviously, but if their positions were reversed, Leon wasn’t sure if he’d do the same thing.
“I didn’t learn about the brain tubes till recently. Or get them,” she replied. The thought to mix up brains had never occurred to her before. “But I don’t know. If I have to eat brains I at least want to do some good.” It gave her a sense of purpose. Made her feel a little better about what she was.
Leon frowned thoughtfully. Liv would probably be way less of a pain in his ass if switched over to those ‘brain tubes’ (though even the name made his skin crawl), but if she wasn’t getting visions, she sure as shit wouldn’t be very useful to his investigations. “Makes sense,” Leon said, taking taking a gulp of his beer. “Might be an idea to switch off when you’ve got a pain in the ass brain like that one,” he added after a moment.
Dan had already said he was fine with her eating pure brains. But her personality changes had caused a lot of grief for Leon too. He had risked a lot because of what the brain made her do. She wanted him to be okay with it too. “That,” Liv said finally picking up the beer Leon had gotten out for her and taking a long sip. “I can do.”
