Who: Amycus Carrow and Weiss Schnee
What: A tour of the Magic Guild
When: Prior to the Incense plot
Where: The OC’s Magic Guild
Rating/Warnings: Low
Status: Complete when posted
Amycus was still reading his way through the library at the Guild, working his way through all of the books they had on symbols and marks, searching for anything that he could use on the one on his arm. He’d tried a few of the spells he’d come across in them, hoping that one of them would work but so far he hadn’t had any luck. The tattoo was still on his arm. But his personal project wasn’t what had him there that afternoon for once. He’d promised a tour to one of the young women on the Network and he was waiting for her to arrive, a bell set up to announce visitors. If she could see the building - she had some sort of magic ability and that was the only requirement to get in the door.
He heard the bell going off and set his book to the side, grabbing his wand just in case it was her since he’d promised a demonstration of his magic. Partly to show her that he wasn’t a complete crackpot. Partly to give himself another opportunity to practice his spells.

It had been during the recent Easter attack of killer rabbits that Weiss had discovered her own gifts had transferred over. To her eternal annoyance, she wasn't nearly as skilled with them here in this reality as she was in the dreams. The Guild was supposed to be an edifice of learning and training, and Amycus seemed particularly trustworthy. So she'd cleared some time in her schedule that afternoon, and taken herself - and her weapon - over to the location.
She stood completely still as she waited for someone to get the door. Not a single hair out of place, no nervous tics or fidgeting to display any impatience on her part. When Amycus finally did arrive, she offered him a smile. "Good afternoon. I hope I'm not interrupting anything important."
***
Amycus gave her a friendly smile back as he motioned her inside. “Not at all. I was just doing some reading in the library here.” He said, suddenly aware that his Mark was visible since his shirt sleeve was rolled up. “Did you have any trouble finding it?” The fact she had seen it showed that she had magic if he understood how the magic cloaking this place worked but it could still be difficult and he knew it. They weren’t exactly on a main road but that was probably for the best with the type of spells that got thrown around in these rooms at times.

"It was a little hard to find," Weiss admitted, looking a bit sheepish as she stepped inside the building. Her eyes noticed the mark on his arm, but had no idea what it meant in the grand scheme of things. Life in the Schnee family had been absent of the fun and magic that could happen in 'frivolous children’s books and media', so for her it was just another tattoo among many.
Amycus had an air to him that commanded the young heiress's respect, and she tried not to fall all over herself to win his approval. It was something her dream self did among people like Pyrrha and her sister that she was trying to overcome. "Will I get to see the library today? I've heard it's quite impressive!"
***
Amycus gave her what he hoped was a reassuring smile when he saw the expression on her face. “I had the same problem when I first came here. I think the people who first started the Guild did that on purpose for some reason.” He hadn’t met any of them as far as he knew so he couldn’t even begin to guess what their reasons were.
“I promised you a tour. And the library seems to be a good place to start. And give us a chance to talk. I did promise a demonstration of what I could do magically also.” He was trying to keep his voice calm, not wanting to overwhelm her with any of this. He’d done a bit of research into her family so he was fairly confident he could guess how out of her normal life all of this was.
***
The calming tone put Weiss at ease, chasing the nervousness out of her fingers and away from her face. The idea of oodles of books and research also helped, and she was looking forward to seeing what his magic could do. But Amycus was right; This, all of it, was quite beyond her normal life, and nothing had put that into sharper contrast than her brother's recent manipulations.
She nodded her head, trying as always to seem confident and prepared. "I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what magic looks like in your universe. In my own it's all quite a bit different, and I'm not sure we even consider it to be real magic. All of that seems to exist only in legends and fairy tales. I am hoping that the guild will be able to give some direction with my own talents anyway. And of course the chance to learn about this new part of my life is always a boon."
***
“Why don’t we go to the library and I’ll give you that demonstration? There’s tea in there also if you want a cup.” And the wards placed on the room would make him feel better. “In mine - witches and wizards have a society separate from muggles - non wizards. We live among them but they don’t know about us. If they find out - the wizard or witch can be in quite a lot of trouble with the Wizengamot. So I guess in a way - we only exist for some people in the stories and fairy tales in my universe.” He said, leading her into the Guild, pausing so that she could look around if she wanted when they passed some of the other rooms and displays on the different types of magic that their members practiced.
***
"I would love a cup of tea!" Weiss said, following him down the hallway. She listened to him intently as he described the way magic worked in his own place, taking interest especially in the idea that it was separated out like that. She moved her head this way and that, taking in the decor and layout of the Guild. There was a lot to see. Weiss decided it wouldn't be amiss to dedicate a few days to familiarizing herself with it all.
"In our world, there are hunters and huntresses, who have been given an ability to use their aura as a defensive mechanism. Those of us gifted with that ability also have special powers that coincide. My family is special in that the powers are hereditary: We can create glyphs that do various things. We do train separately, and live a bit separately mainly because our duties are important to the safety of normal people. But they do know we exist. What's a Wizengamot? Some kind of council or judiciary panel?"
***
Amycus smiled at her as they walked. He couldn’t cook to save his life but he had learned how to make a more than passing cup of tea. “There might even be some cookies or biscuits if my boyfriend tucked some into my briefcase before I came out this morning. Assuming our girls didn’t eat them all between when he last baked and today. That’s always a risk around our house.” He told her, making the decision to lower his guard just a little in talking with her.
“Others in your world don’t have hereditary powers like that? Siblings could have completely different powers?” He and his sister weren’t on the best of terms, here or in the dreams it seemed, but he couldn’t begin to imagine what it would be like to have a completely different type of magic from hers. “It’s our court. The Wizengamot. We have our own government with a Minister but the Wizengamot enforce the laws is the way I understand it. My dream self has been very lucky and not been brought in front of them.”
***
"It isn't at all common, no," Weiss said, first replying to the question about hereditary powers. She noted that he had a boyfriend and also some children, and thought that his mention of his domestic life sounded idyllic and adorable. "The Schnee family line is rare. I have two teammates who are also sisters, and their powers are nothing at all the same."
Weiss had no way of knowing that they didn't have the exact same DNA, since Yang had never mentioned that her mother was someone other than Ruby's. That might have changed the way of things, and would have given her some things to think about if she'd known. "And not everyone in a family will be born with the ability at all. My brother, for instance, is normal. So is my father."
The Wizengamot sounded intimidating, though, and while she was interested she wondered if it was something he wanted to go into detail about. Instead she turned the conversation back towards food. "It sounds as if we'll both be lucky if you find any biscuits left in your briefcase, but I'd be honored if you were willing to share."

“That’s a parallel to my world I think. My sister and I have similar abilities but there are some spells that come much easier to her than me.” Maybe not just in the ease of casting them but the emotional aftermath of them. He hadn’t talked to her about it in a while because they just hadn’t seemed to be on the same page with regards to their magic crossing over to her or in their reaction to the dreams just in general. “And there is no guarantee in my world that someone will have powers just because the rest of their family does. We call them squibs. And there’s also a chance that people can be born with powers even though no one else in their family has them. They’re called muggleborns.” Or mudbloods by his fellow Death Eaters there.
“My dream world seems to be exceptionally racist in some ways now that I say it all out loud. But - why don’t we discuss that more over biscuits and tea. Because here is our library.” He said opening the door to the room that still showed evidence of his reading obsession scattered over the tables. “Don’t worry about spilling - I’m fairly certain they spelled this room to prevent damage. Either that or I’ve just been lucky.” He told her with a smile as he went over to his briefcase, hoping that there were snacks in there and grinning as he looked up at her. “And my dear - we are in luck. The girls did not eat them all.”
***
The tea was delightful and the biscuits were so glorious that Weiss actually decided to disregard her normally careful dieting habits and treat herself to more than one. She expressed her gratitude to Amycus's girls for leaving some for them to snack on, and then went quite as she took in all of the things the Library had to offer. There were so many books that she was sure Blake would have died. She, herself, was looking forward to going into research mode.
Not that she'd ever admit that to anyone outside the guild. Nor could she immediately admit to Amycus that she was certain her own father was extremely racist in both worlds. It was still a little hard to say such things to others.
When they were done, she primly wiped her mouth and fingers, and then got to her feet. "I would love that magic display now, if you wouldn't mind!"
***
Amycus smiled at her, picking up his wand from beside him and casting a simple cleaning charm to do away with most of the crumbs. He’d gotten pretty good at that one since actually starting to practice his magic. “Of course I don’t mind dear. Would you mind setting your cup down on the saucer and taking a step back? I don’t want to accidentally catch you with this,” he explained, focusing on the transfiguration spell he’d learned in his school days there and turning the cup into a rat and then back again.
***
That was unlike any magic Weiss had ever seen before in the dreams. Her eyes widened as the cup turned into a rat, and then reached her finger out to poke the teacup when it reappeared. "Oh now that's impressive. What else can you do?"
